Kim Kang-woo and Kim Bum up for fantasy thriller

javabeans: Ooh, I hope this ends up being true: Kim Kang-woo and Kim Bum are reportedly in talks to star in a “fantasy thriller” movie called Miracle.

girlfriday: Is Kim Bum gonna make a career out of being other guys’ angel fairy godmothers?

javabeans: I think it’s Lee Min-ho’s turn now, actually, what with his best buddies playing angels and Reapers. But he needs to be earthbound, so as to not upset the bromancerly balance.

More songs! And this time, they’re sung by some of your favorite (or not) actors. This list is hardly comprehensive, and I picked mostly those actors who weren’t singers first. (And if they were, they are generally stars who are not known for their singing, despite their origins. See: Kim Kang-woo’s awesome beginnings as a soft-ballad rapper. That video takes forever to load, but trust me, it’s worth it.)

Japanese movie next for Kim Kang-woo

Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man, Invincible) is taking on a Japanese film for his next project, a spy-police thriller called Gaiji Keisatsu or Foreign Affairs Police, which is an adaptation of a Japanese drama from 2009 of the same name.

The 6-episode NHK drama starred Watabe Atsuro and Ishida Yuriko, and was about an elite, top-secret division of the police. Called “spy hunters,” the officers of that unit deal with international terrorism and espionage. The film is bringing back the whole cast of the TV series, including leads Watabe and Ishida, which ought to please fans. (I wish more Korean dramas did this — and did them well, ’cause a half-assed re-edit of a drama doesn’t count — because sometimes you just want more.) Kim Kang-woo will play a South Korean agent who’ll face off against Watabe.

Kim can thank his two recent projects Story of a Man and Invincible for this opportunity abroad, since they’ve earned him a bit of a following in Japan. It’s been a while since he’s taken on something lighter-hearted, but since I loved him being a twisted evil mastermind in Story of a Man, I’m all for him taking on more suspense thrillers (although I think he’d be hilarious as the dry straight man in a comedy).

As for his next Korean project, Kim is slated to act in director Im Sang-soo’s new film Taste of Money, the sorta-not-really follow-up to The Housemaid.

Jo Hyun-jae sings for 49 Days

Kang-ahhhhh, singing for me? *Swoon*

Actor Jo Hyun-jae is contributing a track to the soundtrack for his current drama, 49 Days, following fellow castmate Jung Il-woo, aka our sassy Scheduler, who previously recorded a track. Jo’s contribution is titled “Even If I Live Just One Day,” and was released just today.

As you might guess, given the recent turn of events in the drama, it’s something of a confession piece as Kang starts expressing more of his love for Ji-hyun, which has hitherto been massively repressed by his extreme awkwardness displaying any emotion at all. He’s workin’ on it.

The Housemaid follow-up stars Kim Kang-woo

Okay, folks, I’ve got some bad news and some good news. First, the bad: Lee Jung-jae (Thieves) is no longer playing Mr. Housemaid as previously announced. The good: Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man), whom I’d counted on seeing in Poseidon before that drama went into limbo, is now cast as the lead.

This movie is titled Taste of Money, and while it isn’t related to the Jeon Do-yeon/Lee Jung-jae film The Housemaid, it comes from the same director, Im Sang-soo, and has definite correlations to it. Back when this project was first announced, it was touted as the male version, but it appears the reports were a bit off the mark.

Kim Kang-woo to become a father

Kim Kang-woo (Story of a Man) married quietly earlier this year, and now he’s announced that he and his wife are expecting their first child. They married in June after a seven-year courtship, having been introduced by friends in 2003. This also means that actress Han Hye-jin (Jejoongwon) will be an aunt — his wife is her older sister.

A representative from Kim’s management company, Namoo Actors, stated on the 8th that the couple is three months into the pregnancy, which puts the expected delivery date sometime in spring. Kim is generally protective of his privacy, so there were some at his management company who didn’t even know the truth until the reports leaked to the press: “He’s amazed at how the news got out, but he’s extremely happy at becoming a father.”

Kim Kang-woo cast as lead in Poseidon

This sure got my attention: Kim Kang-woo has been cast to lead the upcoming drama Poseidon, which is set in the world of the Korean Coast Guard. It’ll deal with the officers who execute rescues at sea, handle threats of terrorism, and are assigned to special missions, taking its name from the Poseidon Team, a special forces unit of the Marines.

Kim Kang-woo plays Oh Eun-chul, a character who graduates at the top of his class in the maritime police department and is appointed to the elite Poseidon counterterrorism team. He’ll go up against a rival and colleague in both work and love (naturally!). A previous role had Kim working extensively at sea (the movie Marine Boy, which dealt with drug smuggling via ocean runners), and he said of this role, “I remember suffering a lot when filming that movie at sea. I never thought I’d do a drama with an ocean theme, but because of the character’s appeal and the subject of the country’s top maritime police officers, I decided I wanted to give it a try.”

This drama had been rumored to star Jang Hyuk (after leaving Secret Garden, which thereafter cast Hyun Bin), but I guess he’s out (unless he takes the role of the rival, though I’m going to guess not). I like Jang Hyuk, but to be honest I’m much more interested now, because I’ve been itching to see Kim Kang-woo take on another drama. I know I sound like a broken record, but Story of a Man rocked my world, and Kim was fantastic in it.

While I’m still a little iffy on the premise (I’m recalling 2007′s airport/spy/action drama Air City — ugh), Poseidon will be written and directed by two men who have a bit of experience in the action-thriller genre: Yoo Chul-yong was the PD of 2009′s slick Swallow the Sun, 2007′s police drama HIT, and 2003′s All In. Writer Jo Kyu-won worked on last year’s IRIS.

Kim Kang-woo, of the recent noir thriller Invincible, is featured in two magazine spreads for October. And rawr, this newlywed actor is looking mighty fine in both of them.

First off, he is pictured in a… woodshed?… for Arena magazine, poised to cut through the ropes binding his wrists. The shoot adopts a stylized noir approach with the dark background, heavy shadows, and bright contrast lighting. On the other hand, the second shoot for Sure is more conventional.

Three Korean movies at Venice film fest

Korea’s having a good year in the festival circuit. With Cannes under its belt and sights set on Toronto, Chungmuro takes on Venice, with three films next month.

Invincible, starring Song Seung-heon, Joo Jin-mo, Kim Kang-woo, and Jo Han-seon, will be part of a retrospective, honoring prolific Hong Kong director John Woo (A Better Tomorrow). The four leads are expected to appear for the premiere at the festival.

Jung Woo-sung (Athena) will also be walking the red carpet for his new film Reign of Assassins, (The Swordsman’s World) produced by John Woo and co-starring Michelle Yeoh. I don’t think this one counts as a Korean film, as it was shot in China, but it’s a co-production, so I’ll go with it. What with Athena’s Italian shoots and the festival, it looks like Jung is Italy-bound for a good part of this summer/fall.

Lee Seon-kyun and Jung Yumi‘s indie film Oki’s Movie will also be a contender, and will be officially competing (whereas the others will be more exhibition-style films). This will be the first time attending Venice for both Lee and Jung.

Looks like the Venetian red carpet will be the place to catch a Korean action star next month. I’d go for the Grand Canal alone, but the possibility of seeing Jung Woo-sung speed by James-Bond-style in a boat? Swoon.

The 67th Venice International Film Festival will run from September 1-11.
