A Gentleman’s Dignity inches closer to securing its cast

A whole lotta names are being bandied about for A Gentleman’s Dignity, the new drama set to come from the Secret Garden and Lovers in Paris scriptwriter (hence the heightened buzz).

Jang Dong-gun (Good Morning President) and Lee Na-young (Runaway Plan B) were both previously in contention, and their names have resurface as leading candidates to headline the series. Although the bottom line hasn’t changed (neither is confirmed, both are “positively considering”), the fact that a fresh news cycle has brought both of them up suggests that the drama is close to finalizing negotiations.

Kim Myung-min wraps marathon movie, chooses disaster next

Kim Myung-min has done melodrama, thriller, sageuk, comedy, sageuk comedy, action, mystery — so now it’s time to take on the disaster genre. He has wrapped filming on his latest movie, Pace Maker, and signed on to star in a movie that I dearly hope adopts a cooler English-language title than its literal translation of Hairworm [연가시].

The movie is about the hairworm parasite, which lives by burrowing into the bodies of insects, emerging from their hosts once grown. Apparently it can even force the hosts to behave unnaturally, like throwing themselves into water. It’s like Alien for the buggy set. *Shudders.* In the movie, the hairworm begins to attack people, who start dying one by one for seemingly no reason, and Kim Myung-min plays a pharmaceutical company salesman who fights to save his family.

Kim Myung-min races in Pace Maker

The Method man strikes again: Kim Myung-min takes on the role of an elite-level runner for his new movie Pace Maker, and it looks like he’s dropped yet more weight to do it. Eep!

I’d thought he’d lost all the weight he could afford to lose (and then some) for his movie My Love By My Side, and was relieved when that was over, for the sake of his health. But here he is, looking gaunt again to act the role of a pace maker, who participates in the first part of a marathon to keep the pace for its frontrunner, and then drops out. But he dreams of being a contender himself; ergo, movie.

Kim Myung-min starts filming Pace Maker

It’s nice to see Kim Myung-min lightening up again, considering how intense and emotionally draining his projects have been in recent years. (For instance, he played a minister who loses his faith in God when his daughter is kidnapped in The Demolished Man, and pushed his body to the limit while playing a dying man in My Love By My Side.)

He was in the recently released mystery-sageuk-comedy Joseon’s Great Detective, which let him show his underutilized comic skills, and how he dons a chicken helmet for his new movie Pace Maker.

Go Ara romances… Kim Myung-min?!?

Go Ara has been cast as the female lead in a movie, which I was generally pleased to hear…until I saw who her co-stars are: Kim Myung-min and Ahn Sung-ki. Eeeeee. Oh man, is she gonna be crushed.

It’s not that she’s a bad actress (although, erm, she kind of is — she’s gorgeous and she can cry on cue, but she has no connection with the camera and therefore feels very flat), but that those two men are just about the two best actors in Korea today. (Or, at least, two of the best in a very select group of A-listers.) Ara’s a lightweight on her own terms, but against those two, she’ll all but flutter away.

Kim Myung-min and Han Ji-min pair up for Allure

Kim Myung-min and Han Ji-min have a new movie about to hit theaters — the sageuk mystery with a comedic bent, Joseon’s Great Detective — and are featured looking rather cool and sexy together in this photo shoot for Allure Korea magazine, which also features an interview with the duo.

I love Kim Myung-min in comedies, so I’ve been looking forward to this movie, especially since he’s been doing more dramatic stuff lately — he played a pastor who loses faith when his daughter is kidnapped in The Demolished Man, and prior to that took on the role of a man dying of Lou Gehrig’s disease in My Love By My Side. Joseon’s Great Detective, on the other hand, looks quirky and a bit dark at the same time; here are the stills from the movie, and here’s the trailer.

Image transformations abound in Joseon’s Great Detective

More stills are out for Kim Myung-min and Han Ji-min‘s upcoming comedy-mystery sageuk movie Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane, and they convey much of the quirky humor of the previously released movie trailer.

In the movie (which is based on a novel), Kim Myung-min plays a sharp detective who ferrets out corrupt officials under orders from King Jeong-jo. The movie held a press conference earlier this week, on December 21, where Kim talked about his approach to the character, who is thoroughly quirky whenever he’s not in investigation mode. (Since he’s supposedly the best detective of his times, one assumes he’s got a lot of professional talents to counter his buffoonish traits outside the job.)

Trailer for comedic period mystery Joseon’s Great Detective

The character posters and trailer are out for Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane, which looks like it could be a hoot. The film is highly stylized and peppered with action and comedy, which has me sitting up in interest — plus, it stars A-list leading man Kim Myung-min (Beethoven Virus, My Love By My Side). Always a good thing.

Kim plays the titular hero, the top detective of the Joseon era, who seems like a Sherlock Holmes-y type of character with his mix of bravado, confidence, and goofiness (though perhaps less depraved/tortured).

The normally sweet-faced, lively Han Ji-min (Cain & Abel, Yi San) is looking a lot bolder and darker for her role; she’s also wearing a lot of black and red, which is practically movie/drama code for “sly femme fatale.” We’ve already seen the first movie poster featuring Kim Myung-min, and here are the rest. Her poster bears the tagline, “What is it you wish to know?” That, coupled with the sly smiles and knowing glances in the trailer video, gives her an aura of mystery.

Kim Myung-min plays Joseon’s Great (mustachioed) Detective

The first poster is out for Kim Myung-min‘s upcoming mystery historical movie, which has undergone a slight title change to Joseon’s Great Detective: Secret of the Wolfsbane. And while I’m not a fan of the mustache on my leading men — or its tawdry cousin, the pornstache — you’ve gotta give them credit for going for the comic factor. Lulz.

This project isn’t described as a comedy (it’s a suspense mystery), but this gives me hope that we can expect a dash of humor, which is an idea I can get fully behind. Although Kim is known for his powerful, commanding roles — whether playing a cold, ambitious doctor in White Tower, a sneering orchestra conductor in Beethoven’s Virus, or a man dying of ALS in My Love By My Side — he also has a wonderful sense of humor and comic timing. (If you haven’t seen him playing a hilarious, dense, brawns-before-brains type of ex-gangster in Bad Family, I highly recommend it.)

The movie takes place in the 17th year of Joseon’s King Jeong-jo, and brings in Kim, playing the top detective of the day, to investigate a series of murders. Although his character had initially been a version of Jung Yak-yong, a real-life historical figure who was the subject of a mystery-sageuk cable drama two years ago, the description has been changed and he now plays a character named simply Kim Jin.

The film, which is based on a historical novel titled Secret of the Gate of Virtue, is set for a January 27 release. It co-stars Han Ji-min (Cain and Abel) and Oh Dal-soo (The Good, The Bad, The Weird).

Han Ji-min joins Kim Myung-min in mystery film

Actress Han Ji-min (Cain and Abel) has been chosen as the co-star to Kim Myung-min in the upcoming movie Joseon Detective Jung Yak-yong.

Kim’s involvement was announced earlier this summer, and he’ll take the titular detective role. The period mystery film is based on a novel (Secret of the Gate of Virtue), and tells the story of a detective working on the case of a woman’s suicide.

Han has been cast as a “mysterious merchant,” and Oh Dal-soo (The Good, The Bad, The Weird) takes a supporting role. The movie began filming on September 2, and plans to release early next year.

This will be Han’s first acting project since 2009′s Cain and Abel; Kim’s last role was in the thriller movie The Demolished Man, which released earlier this year.
