Now THIS looks cool. The trailer and posters are out for the historical spy movie Coffee, which are totally different from what I was expecting, but in the best way — it’s historical action with a twist. And the character posters have a comic book feel that is totally different from what I thought this movie would be, but I’m digging the stylized look.

The preview is below, and what starts out as simple coffee-break happytime for Emperor Gojong soon takes an intrigue-filled turn when spies start running wild and people start dying. The background is late Joseon Dynasty, but the ambiance is total modernized thriller, with a stylish fusion bent.

Death by coffee. That seems to be the main idea behind spy-intrigue-historical-thriller film Coffee (phonetically Kabi, per the old word for the drink). Well, I’m sure there are worse ways to go. Said the coffee nut who named herself after the addiction.

Above is the film’s newly released poster, which I find intriguing. It sets up the central premise of the story, which is an assassination attempt made on Emperor Gojong via his personal barista. Park Hee-soon reclines in his seat, playing the emperor, while served by the woman at the center of the conspiracy, Kim So-yeon. Watching is a mysterious man, Joo Ji-mo.

My god, this woman is gorgeous no matter what she wears. Really, I think she could make a potato sack work on the red carpet. Kim So-yeon (Dr. Champ, IRIS) does a photo shoot for InStyle where she purportedly “transforms into a goddess.” Yeah, I’d say she already is one, no transformation needed.

The concept is called “Sheer Softness,” and for once the name of the thing actually fits, since she’s working the see-through angle. I for one would love that sheer ballerina skirt-meets-ballgown, except I’d feel slightly naked in it. Oh well, what’s the diff when you’re Kim So-yeon, yeah?

Will Kim So-yeon be filling the spot vacated by Lee Da-hae? It looks like the big-budget spy melodrama Coffee is finally getting back on its feet after some huge production delays. And uh…not to lead the parade or anything, but if I were casting a spytastic movie, historical or not, I’d have started by knocking on Kim So-yeon’s door. Did you SEE her one-episode stint on IRIS-spinoff Athena? Rest my case.

She’s still considering the project so it’s not a done deal, but now that her name’s being bandied about, I’m suddenly curious to know if it’s going to be more action-centric than I had previously assumed. Coffee takes place in Emperor Gojong’s reign in the late Joseon era, and the lead role is the emperor’s barista, who is also a key player in his assassination attempt.

Finally! We’ve sure been waiting long enough for this day. The Goddess of War herself, Kim So-yeon, will be reprising her IRIS character for Athena on today’s Episode 17. Truthfully I’ve been lagging a bit behind on watching Athena, but I still contend that it’s better than IRIS, at least for me. Now if Kim So-yeon and Kim Seung-woo had been a major part of Athena rather than guest spotting, it might have been the best thing since sliced bread.

Oh well. I guess I’ll have to settle for her spending an episode back with her commanding officer, and with Athena‘s resident Northern defector-turned-spy, Ki-soo (played by the awesome Kim Min-jong). Now THAT would’ve been a good spinoff. ZEUS: The Northern Trio’s Adventures South of the Border. Why won’t anyone make that show? It’s the least the drama gods can do, for having Kim Seung-woo drop out of Crime Squad. I mean, what’s a girl to do about her incurable ajusshi crush?

Allure had the foresight to photograph a slew of actresses while they were getting ready for the end-of-year awards ceremonies, and they’ll be featured in an upcoming spread entitled “One Hour Before the Red Carpet.” I love moments like the one captured above, of Song Ji-hyo (Goong, Serious Crime Squad), which shows her goofy side, made popular this past year by her gregarious turn in variety programs like Running Man.

Kim So-yeon (Dr. Champ, Prosecutor Princess) looks RIDICULOUSLY stunning, as per usual. This woman has never met a red carpet dress she didn’t rock. It actually makes me laugh to think of all the crazy outfits she wore in Prosecutor Princess, when could have looked like this. Some actresses look better in everyday wear, while others, like Kim So-yeon, should really just spend all her days in red carpet gowns. Hell, I would, if I were her.

There are lots of awards handed out, for sure, but at least SBS has some strong shows this year, with great performances all around in the competition. Go Hyun-jung stacks up another Daesang for her turn as the first Korean female president in Daemul, which if I’m to go based on all the parodies, involved lots of shouting in the rain. There’s a performance by Noh Min-woo, a THREE-way tie for Best Couple, and of course, some red carpet hits and misses.

What?! I loved this moment!

Oh… The most beautiful (visually speaking – yes, I loved screencapping this one) drama of the year is about to end, and I’m as happy as a k-drama watcher can be, with a most satisfying ending after weeks of obsessing over such beloved characters.

I’d like to thank you avid DrChampers (?) who read and discussed throughout the series, hanging there, waiting for a resolution that would soothe your impending wrath or simply for a step forward in a drama that was almost always in the same place. And, obviously, a big hug and thanks to javabeans and girlfriday for lending us this space to write and spazz freely like two delusional fangirls or depressed emo girls in a bad day to boot (depending on the episode) *muah*
