Guess it’s just a Kim Soo-hyun kinda week. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Here’s the next peek at undercover spy movie Covertly, Grandly, where he plays an elite North Korean spy whose cover in the South is the village idiot. The poster looks just like the original webtoon that the film is based on, with Kim Soo-hyun working that signature green tracksuit that’ll be his character’s uniform during the film.

Kim Soo-hyun sure looks relaxed for his latest magazine spread, which is probably a good thing since he’s about to become very busy promoting his upcoming film, the comic action-thriller movie Covertly, Grandly, wherein he plays a hotshot spy from North Korea whose cover identity is a clumsy, bumbling fool.

The spread was shot last month in Paris, and if his wardrobe is any indication (the fashions reportedly all come from the newest season), spring is gonna be all about shiny metallics and floral patterns. And yet, somehow he makes it all look good. Then again, Paris can make lots of things look good.

Thank goodness Covertly, Grandly looks hilarious, which is a relief since there are two ways this kind of wacky, outrageous premise can go: awesome, or cringeworthy. The movie is a spy-action-comedy starring Kim Soo-hyun (The Moon That Embraces the Sun) as an elite, even legendary North Korean spy sent on a mission to South Korea… with a cover as the village idiot. HA.

We get to see both sides in the new teaser released this week, where we first see him dressed in his military uniform and receiving orders. He takes his job seriously, even when that means playing the fool, grinning doofily and tripping all over himself as he establishes his new persona. Gone is the sharp agent Won Ryu-hwan, to be replaced with that shabby green tracksuit, a messy bowl cut, and the much less cool-sounding name of Bang Dong-gu.

But then! One day the phone rings, and he’s called into action. Enter two other North Korean agents, played by Park Ki-woong (Gaksital) and Lee Hyun-woo (To the Beautiful You). They’re also operating under their own disguised identities — Park Ki-woong’s orangey hair is thanks to his idol-wannabe cover, while Lee Hyun-woo plays a strictly disciplined spy who’s disguised as a flower boy high school student. Haha.

The teaser is super short, but I do find it a relief to see that the action bits look more cool than silly. That’s always the risk you run when smashing together the action and comedy genres (cautionary tales: Myung-wol the Spy, Level 7 Civil Servant — the drama, that is), though when you do it well it all adds up to brisk, fun summer blockbuster. It probably isn’t a movie you’ll want to analyze to pieces, but as a popcorn flick with tons of laughs (and an eye candy cast comprised of pretty boys who are actually talented actors) — I’m there.

It looks as though the production is preparing to unleash a barrage of promos and teasers in the coming days; their website denotes nine teasers in all, each with their own launch date. The first was released this week, and the second will be unveiled next Monday. I’m sure we can expect a steady stream leading up to the film’s June release.

Well, we’ve given out our awards for 2012; now it’s time to see how MBC distributed its honors. And if past years are any indication, there are bound to be some head-scratchers and some obvious political choices. Then again, that’s sort of the name of the game all across the board, isn’t it?

The thing about this station is, every year I see MBC’s award list and think, “Oh right. The station did have some hits after all,” which makes me wonder whether I’m misremembering the year as a sparse one for the broadcasters. And then I think a little more and realize that basically, this was all they had. Wasn’t much competition within categories, which is why you got dramas cleaning up in multiple categories, ’cause what else would’ve taken it?

MBC also has the habit of creating categories or altering them without explanation, which just reinforces the idea that they’ve got a list of shows they need to give awards to, and would rather fit the categories to the shows than vice versa. Ah, dramaland.

The 2012 Blue Dragon Film Awards were held last night, and now it feels like we’ve entered awards season in earnest, following up on last month’s Grand Bell Awards.

There were a few of the same names and titles, but on the whole, I’d say the Blue Dragons were much more in line with what I would’ve projected, rather than being juggernauted by one film. I’m all for a film winning all the prizes it’s due, but there was something strange about having Gwanghae so overwhelmingly dominate the Grand Bells (it swept 15 of 23 categories!); it’s nice to see the love spread around with this ceremony.

WINNERS LIST

girlfriday: Well when you see the words “Kim Soo-hyun” and “army” in a headline, your heart tends to lurch into your throat. But! It’s not time yet!

javabeans: According to his management company, he has made no plans or decisions to fulfill his service yet. He just got the physical. You can all resume breathing.

Ha, this is what you get when you make a public wager, your film blows up into a huge box office success, and then you have to do as you jokingly promised you would. In Kim Soo-hyun’s case, he’d made a declaration last month at the film’s red carpet event that if The Thieves broke the 10-million-tickets-sold mark, he’d give a personal piggyback ride to the 10 millionth ticketholder.

Time to put your money where your mouth is! Kim gave the promised ride on August 18 at Seoul’s Megabox in Kangnam, along with his co-star Kim Hae-sook, who had her own promise to keep, bestowing a moviegoer with a kiss. I have no idea how people were able to pinpoint which exact ticket sold in the country was the 10 millionth, but they located the female middle-school student, who came up from the countryside with her parents for the event. She got her piggyback ride around the theater and apparently cried in joy. I don’t blame ya. He just made her the coolest girl in school.
