OCN’s upcoming vampire detective drama titled (aptly) Vampire Detective is adding Kim Yoon-hye (Flower Boy Next Door, You’ve Fallen For Me) to the cast, and she’ll be romancing the titular hero, to be played by Lee Joon (Heard It Through the Grapevine).
This is the drama that’s totally not related to Vampire Prosecutor despite sounding very similar to it, centering around a hero who’s a private investigator with a prickly personality who suddenly becomes a vampire one day. He takes on a diverse range of cases and solves problems for his clientele, while also investigating a mystery dealing with his own past and its secrets. Yup, nothing like Vampire Prosecutor, right? (I don’t think the odds are great of us getting a Season 3 on that drama, and have to wonder if OCN decided it would just whip up another show to fill that void.)
Aw, what a happy night for Lee Bo-young, who got to arrive on the arm of a noona-killer, pick up the grand prize of the evening, and go home to her new hubby Ji Sung. Sometimes when you’re on fire, you’re on fiyah. The actress took home the top honor at the Korea Drama Awards last night, for her two hit dramas this year: weekend ratings darling My Daughter Seo-young and weekday hit I Hear Your Voice.
Holiday greetings from dramaland! It’s Chuseok week in Korea, so whether you’re celebrating with your family or it’s just another day in your part of the world, happy autumn harvest. Keep in mind that there are changes to your regularly scheduled programming due to the holiday. On the upside, ringing in the fall means you know what: fall dramas!
Happy Chuseok, everyone!
Kim Yoon-hye only just started on her current show, tvN’s delightful rom-com Flower Boy Next Door (she plays Enrique’s frank-speaking first love), but she’s lining up her next project already. It’s a movie titled Girl that’s described as a “horror melo,” which sounds like an intriguing mix.
(If you’re like me, you may still find yourself accidentally calling Kim Yoon-hye by her former stage name, Woori, but this is now her third project under her new name—which is also her old name, being the one she was born with—so I suppose I’ll just have to get used to it. She was still Woori when she was acting in You’ve Fallen For Me, but reverted to her real name as horror-comedy Fortune Tellers came out.)
Girl is set against the scenic backdrop of Gangwon-do, and in particular a lake; there, a “horrific story” unfolds alongside a touching melo loveline between a boy and girl. The deeper the love grows, the more the boy becomes attacker and the girl becomes a victim, though it seems to hint that there’s more here than just an abusive relationship. Perhaps an element of the surreal or supernatural?
Whee, production is underway for the next installment of tvN’s Oh Boy series: this time we have Flower Boy Next Door, starring Park Shin-hye as a lonely girl locked away in her room, where she spends her days peeping at her hot neighbor. Hey, girl’s gotta have hobbies. I’m picturing a comedic Rear Window setup, where Park Shin-hye is Jimmy Stewart, and there’s a little less murder and a lot more eye candy. Huh, come to think of it, isn’t there a Miss Lonelyhearts in that movie too?
When it rains, it pours: Another addition rounds out our Flower Boy Next Door cast, with Kim Yoon-hye jumping onboard. If that name is unfamiliar, it’s because the artist formerly known as Woori changed her stage name this year and is now acting under her real name.
In this drama, Kim Yoon-hye plays Yoon Shi-yoon’s first love and best friend. Her character is described as a free spirit, the kind of person who throws herself wholeheartedly after something she wants. Ha, well if the thing she wants is the hero, she’ll have to settle for disappointment since he’s set up to romance Park Shin-hye.
The two ladies have actually gone head-to-head before; Kim Yoon-hye played Park’s rival in last year’s You’ve Fallen For Me, where their characters were both up for the lead in the big anniversary musical production. Maybe one of these days Kim will manage to win the upper hand, but it’ll have to be in a different drama — maybe third time’ll be the charm?
Flower Boy Next Door premieres January 7 on tvN.
