And with that, we conclude the delightfully amusing Actress Special of 1 Night 2 Days, which is a little sad because it totally whets my appetite for more. But on the other hand, the rarity of such an event is a large part of the reason why it’s so entertaining when that blue moon swings around and we get such an unexpected burst of awesome. Well, the special may be over, but the memories last forever.

javabeans: It’s hilarious to see the difference in the two teams as they start the race. Team Su-geun gets the idea right away to search the car for clues, and turns up a good many of them, hidden under floor mats, behind seats, and in side pockets. They’re already deep in mission mode, driven by the sole motivator, “We can’t get dunked in the water!” Team Ho-dong, by contrast, is like the kid in the kiddie pool who eases into the water two inches at a time, thinking he’s got all this time to get used to the idea. It’s like the other team’s already busy playing Marco Polo, while his team’s discussing, “Well, the term Marco Polo comes from the explorer of the 14th century…”

javabeans: So here we are with the highly anticipated Actress Special. I was half-anticipating it, and half-skeptical that the gimmick would wear thin. But I’m happy to report that I got a huge kick out of this episode, and thought it was a hoot. I wished it were longer! There’s surely enough material in this trip for an extra episode, even without extending the trip, no?

girlfriday: Seriously. I was worried that it’d end up being very un-1N2D, but what a fun episode, and a great chance to see the boys out of their element. Girls! Oh, no, what do we do? Girls!

Well THIS should be interesting. Variety program 1 Night 2 Days has scored a rather impressive lineup of stars for its upcoming Actress Special. (Every other week is a “special” of some sort, so that’s not anything new, but a six-star guest roster IS.) So who will be joining the boys on their next outing?

Clockwise from top left, we have: Yeom Jung-ah (Royal Family), Choi Ji-woo (Actresses), Lee Hye-young (Queen of Housewives), Kim Sumi (I Love You), Kim Haneul (Road No. 1), and Seo Woo (Flames of Desire).

PD Na Young-seok stated that there wasn’t anything special planned in their honor, reinforcing the fact that they’d really be just participating in an otherwise typical 1N2D shoot. He said, “The actresses will play games, possibly starve, sleep outside, and go into the water, just as the members always do.” Heh. Hehehehe. Leave it to Na PD to be a hardass in the best possible way.

On May 2, Jang Dong-gun married fellow actress Go So-young, and given Jang’s status as one of Korea’s most popular (and most loved) actors, the wedding was pretty much the equivalent of a fancy awards ceremony red carpet. There were approximately 500 (!) guests in attendance.

The wedding took place at Seoul’s Silla Hotel, which was preceded by a press conference (the ceremony itself was not open to the public or press).

December 30 was, once again, the night of the 2009 MBC Drama Awards. Unlike last year, there was no split Daesang award nor the ensuing controversy, but then again, there really was nobody with whom it could be shared. To absolutely nobody’s surprise, Go Hyun-jung was named Daesang winner for her delicious portrayal of Mi-shil in Queen Seon-deok, which had a monstrous night. Full awards list below.

Actress Choi Kang-hee (My Sweet Seoul) published her essay collection at the end of September, and within only ten days it’s already become a bestseller.

The collection is titled Choi Kang-hee, A Little Child’s Little Happiness and has shot to the top ten of various bestseller lists. Currently, the volume has sold more than 32,000 copies and is heading into a fifth printing. The publisher’s initial printing produced 10,000 copies, but because of demand, they have upped the latest print order to 20,000 volumes.

After Boys Before Flowers left the air, MBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama Queen of Housewives [내조의 여왕] shot up in the ratings, where it currently resides in the 22%-25% range. Not about to let a popular and well-received show go easily, MBC is looking to extend the drama.

One rep from the production team said, “Based on the viewers’ positive response, we decided to extend the broadcast run. At first, we considered a two-episode extension, but now we’re looking into adding another week for a four-episode extension.”

The final result is to be decided between the production company and MBC, and the two parties will enter meetings this week to hammer out the details.

No complaints from the stars, who are all enjoying a rise in visibility. Naturally the lead stars Kim Nam-joo and Oh Ji-ho are getting lots of attention, as well as Lee Hye-young playing the sly corporate wife and Choi Chul-ho as her stern husband. But the upswing has been most dramatic for Yoon Sang-hyun, the playboy-ish curly-haired CEO, and Sunwoo Sun, who plays his neglected wife (who also recently came out about her real age), who were the least-known at the drama’s outset. Yoon had small roles in lesser-watched dramas (Three Dads One Mom, Fireworks) while Sunwoo is still a rookie.

I’m behind in watching this drama but still onboard, as long as it remains funny and lively. An extension works for a pleasant, engaging show like this, so there probably won’t be many difficulties in making it happen.

I found MBC’s Monday-Tuesday drama Queen of Housewives [내조의 여왕] to be a pleasant surprise, as I hadn’t had any expectations for it. At first glance, it’s possible to dismiss this show from its unexciting synopsis and a cast that may be solid but not quite buzzworthy.

But no, Queen of Housewives is light and funny, and easy to watch. I breezed through the first four episodes in no time, and find myself wanting to keep going. I do have a few issues with it, which I talk about below, but on the whole find this series pretty enjoyable.

A couple things: This covers Episodes 1 through 4, but it isn’t a proper recap. Also, I don’t think I’m going to do individual recaps for this series, but I may decide to weigh in periodically, if I keep liking it.
