And then there were two: Minwoo also hospitalized

…or maybe the title of this post should be “Are you kidding me with this? Dude let the Shinhwa guys rest in peace! (And no, not that kind of RIP.)”

Because, seriously? Seriously? Another Shinwha member is hospitalized following the group’s hyped-up tenth-anniversary concert (March 29 and 30) and ninth-studio-album promotional activities?

First it was Kim Dong Wan, and now it’s Lee Minwoo. Or to be more accurate, apparently Minwoo was first, and then Dong Wan, only they didn’t alert the press about Minwoo’s condition until now. I’m not so sure why they’re announcing this after the fact; maybe they thought Dong Wan could use some press-mill company.

Minwoo was admitted to the hospital on the 4th for exhaustion, spent two nights and three days being treated, and was released on the 6th. His management explained, “Lee Minwoo had been working without rest on his solo material, which he was producing himself, and gone out on Shinhwa activities; his accumulated fatigue and stress wore him down.”

To the Shinhwa guys: Give it a rest! And I mean that in the nicest, most literal way possible. Working so hard to cram in activities before you enlist in the army that two of your members literally collapse in exhaustion is NOT the way to go. We’d like to have something left to welcome back in two years.

News bites: February 4, 2008

  • Singer-producer-actor M, also known as Shinhwa’s Lee Minwoo, surprises fans with the announcement of a Valentine’s Day release for a mini-album, which follows his third solo album released last year, “Explore M.” Interestingly, the mini-album takes a departure from his usual hip-hoppy pop style, and boasts collaborations with some of the country’s top jazz, soul and funk performers. Along with the album, he’ll be giving a special Valentine’s concert in Seoul on the 16th and 17th (well, post-Valentine then).
  • Song Il Kook was called over the weekend for inquiry in the reporter violence incident, for which he is being sued and is countersuing in response.
  • Singer-actor Lee Seung Gi is currently appearing in a segment of the variety program Happy Sunday, displaying a stark contrast from his usual warm, cute image with a new, eccentric character. His “Heo Dang” is immature and flighty and speaks in a Saturi accent — and fans are loving his “oddball charm.”
  • College student Moon Geun Young has returned to Korea after spending the holidays in Australia, ready to gear up for her next drama. Painter of the Wind, based on a book of the same name, centers around the rivalry between two artists in the Joseon era; her character is one of the artists, a woman who pretends to be a man. Let the Yoon Eun Hye comparisons begin, since we all know nobody’s ever done the woman-dressed-as-man role before. Nobody tell Shakespeare.
  • Fans wonder, did Jang Geun Seok have plastic surgery? They note a difference in his eyes and a higher bridge to his nose, and most agree that his face looks much different than his younger days. But, they concede, it could also be aging and loss of weight. I just know that he used to be so cute. *sigh*

Minwoo credits/blames Dong Wan for going solo

Minwoo was on an episode of the talk show Yashimmanman that aired on the 12th, where he talked about being the first of the Shinhwa boys to go solo — citing oversensitive Dong Wan as one of his reasons.

(God, will you look at those eyes? How can a guy have such pretty anime-like eyes? You know, people slag on Minwoo’s height all the time but I think it’s a good thing he’s not taller — just imagine how annoying he’d be if he added heart-swoony tallness to all his attributes. He’d be totally conceited without some major flaw holding him back. I mean, look at Daniel Henney. The guy’s stunningly beautiful but I’m pretty sure he’s also insufferable. I have not liked him in one single interview I’ve seen him give. Which would be more overlookable, say, if he were actually talented. But for all the apologists out there — Have you SEEN “Seducing Mr. Perfect”??)

Whoa, major sidebar there. Back to Minwoo and Dong Wan.

Okay, so it turns out the full story’s not nearly as dramatic as it sounds. During their days of living in the same house, Minwoo found that the only time he could work on writing songs was when he was alone in his room at night, trying to keep quiet and wearing headphones. But Kim Dong Wan, in the next room, would always know and come by, saying, “Hey, keep quiet! I’m trying to sleep!”

Minwoo would therefore try to find places to work alone, and in the end decided to go solo. He expressed how he felt living with the Shinhwa members: “Back then, it was really my dream to go solo, but now I really miss those days.”

(He also revealed some stories from those days, such as the time someone had put a ketchup bottle in the shower instead of shampoo — and when Andy tried to wash his hair, he shouted in shock, “Ah! My head’s bleeding!” Heh.)

Minwoo makes a bad first impression

Actor Gu Hye Sun and singer-actor Lee Minwoo (or just “M”) first worked together in the sitcom Nonstop 5, but they had their first meeting some time before that.

And, apparently, Gu Hye Sun was less than thrilled.

On the cable program Park Kyung Rim’s Wonderful Outing, Minwoo had a segment where he’d call his friends and ask them to meet up. Lots of entertainers have been the recipients of the call, and on a recent episode airing October 26, he called Gu Hye Sun. She was home resting (she’s currently filming the historical drama series King and I), and despite the late hour, she came out for her friend.

Others who’d showed up included Kim Min Sun, Kang Kyung Joon (also from Nonstop 5 — I love that they’re all still buddies), Kim Chang Ryeol, Shim Eun Ji, and Kil Gun. The MC and recently married comedienne Park Kyung Rim asked for a show of hands for whoever liked Minwoo best of the six Shinhwa members. Everyone raised their hands, except for one person — Gu Hye Sun.
