Just why is Mighty Mouth such a star magnet?

Here’s what I wanna know: Which industry bigwig is brand-new rap duo Mighty Mouth servicing sexually? Or bribing? Or blackmailing?

First, Yoon Eun Hye lent her vocals to their debut single, “I Love You,” and her high-profile collaboration helped the track shoot to the top of music charts with stunning speed. The song was then performed live by JOO, and then actress Han Ga In.

Now the rest of their first full-length album is poised for success; the current song gaining traction is “Energy,” which features the Wonder Girls’ Sun Ye. But that’s not all — the album features performances by Solbi, Yuri, DJ DOC’s Kim Chang Ryeol, and even Horan. (Horan?? That sure caught my eye.)

Sure, kpop is a relatively small pool, and singers and groups do tend to work together frequently — but not usually with such a high density of high-profile names in a brand-spankin’-new artist’s debut album. Big producers require big money, which a new group wouldn’t have. And as far as I can tell, Mighty Mouth aren’t themselves a hotbed of genius musical talent — the album is half-decent, I’ll agree (though also half-meh), but not extraordinary. I don’t see how this rap duo attracted such big names from the get-go without some major behind-the-scenes maneuvering going on. Until that reason becomes clear, I consider myself at leisure to conjure up plausible explanations myself. Right now I’m going with servicing sexually.

News bites: April 5, 2008

  • On the April 4 broadcast of MBC’s Section TV, Lee Da Hae listed Taiwanese actor-singer-producer Jay Chou as an actor she’d like to work with. Asked why she chose him, she explained, “The first thing is personality. I wonder if we’d be a good match.” I’m sure she means that strictly professionally.
  • Duo Mighty Mouth shot to fame with some help from Yoon Eun Hye with their debut song “I Love You” (listen here), and now they’re featuring the much-hyped new singer and JYP protégé JOO. I guess they have a thing for pretty girls with weak vocals?
  • Popular comedian and Infinity Challenge regular Park Myung Soo is getting married tomorrow (April 6) and spent the week leading up to the big day undergoing wedding prep — on the air. The other four hosts (Yoo Jae Seok, Jung Hyung Don, Noh Hong Chul, Jung Joon Ha) carried out the “Making Park Myung Soo the No. 1 Bridegroom Project” — massages, makeovers — in its full gag-laden glory on the variety show.
  • Speaking of weddings, Andy and Solbi, who act as a married couple in the “We Got Married” segment on MBC’s Sunday, Sunday Night, are attracting notice for their onstage duet performing his new “Love Song” on MBC’s Music Core.
  • Kang Ta, who just began his military service, revealed in a recent interview that he’d considered a nose job, even going so far as to have a doctor’s consultation, but decided against it thinking even minor nose work would lead everyone to believe he’d had his whole face plasticized. He acknowledges that some people still believe he’s had work done, but affirms he’s never laid a knife to his face.
  • And here’s something especially interesting! Rock/pop singer Lee Juck’s short story is being produced as a full-length animated film by the Korea Film Academy. The source material, “Jeh Bool Chal’s Story” [제불찰 씨 이야기], was included in Lee Juck’s short-story collection (pic at right) Fingerprint Hunter [지문사냥꾼], and is described as a satirical piece about a man (Jeh Bool Chal) who is so ignored by people that he shrinks to a small enough size to enter a person’s ear. I love surreal fiction like this — reminds me of Haruki Murakami’s metaphysical short story “The Elephant Vanishes.” And I love literate musicians — first it’s Horan, and now Lee Juck — combining two of my mostest favoritest things in the world.

  • As a promotional measure, looks like Yoon Eun Hye’s collaboration with brand-new pop/hip-hop duo Mighty Mouth was a smashing success. They’ve shot up the music charts with “frightening speed” for a new artist, chasing #1 song “One More Time” (Jewelry) to land the #2 spot on Nate’s Top 100. (Song here.) Such is the power of Yoon Eun Hye.
  • Han Ji Min (above), currently acting in historical drama Yi San opposite Lee Seo Jin, is launching her own clothing line, Sweet SOUP by Han Ji Min. Clothing company Dongkwang International is producing the brand, described as cute “French chic” and marketed to teenagers and younger twentysomethings. Han Ji Min will participate in the designing and as brand model.
  • Song Seung Heon and Kwon Sang Woo’s new film Destiny (Sook-myeong) isn’t out yet — it releases on the 20th — but its OST single is already a hit.
  • Actress-singer (and lingerie entrepreneur) Uhm Jung Hwa admits that the strongly criticized over-revealing, sexy costuming that she wore during performances in her ninth album days were actually underwear. Honey, we knew.
  • Jang Geun Seok has been picked as a car-racing event host for MBC ESPN’s Go To eXtreme show. He professes to be a fan of the show, whose season 1 was emceed by Ryu Shi Won and Yoon Jung Su. He sure is busy; after Hong Gil Dong ends, his movie Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do opens in April. Does he sleep?
  • The Korean psychological thriller Addicted, starring Lee Byung Heon and Lee Mi Yeon, has been remade by Hollywood (sigh) — the American version, Possession, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar (hmm) and Lee Pace (yay!) and is set to open on the 28th. With the rash of Korean films being given the glossy Hollywood treatment (in addition to Addicted and Il Mare [made into The Lake House], My Sassy Girl and Tale of Two Sisters are in the works), let’s hope ONE of them can get it right.

Mighty Mouth, featuring Yoon Eun Hye

As previously mentioned, actress and former pop singer Yoon Eun Hye has recently collaborated with new hip-hop/pop group Mighty Mouth on a track that’s just been released on their first single album.

The song has been released in time for White Day, that Sadie Hawkins equivalent of Valentine’s Day (falling a month later) created ’cause the candy industry needed some way of getting rid of its Valentine’s remainder chocolate supply.

Given Yoon Eun Hye’s high profile and the fact that she hasn’t done any recording or performing in years (Baby VOX broke up sometime in 2005, soon after which Yoon’s acting career took off with Goong), the song’s gotten a lot of attention in the press and by fans. Take a listen below. Catchy song, decent (though not spectacular) vocals.

  • Actor-singer Lee Seung Gi broke a finger on the 23rd while filming his segment for the popular Happy Sunday variety program, and underwent surgery. Although he doesn’t think the injury is overly serious, he’ll most likely have stop his broadcast activities for the immediate future. Aw.
  • Actress and former Baby VOX popstarlet Yoon Eun Hye is singing for the first time in a long while since she left pop music to transition into a successful acting career. She lends her vocals to “I Love You,” the debut single for new rap duo Mighty Mouth (oops, not Mighty Mouse like I thought, which woulda been kinda more awesome) — but insists this does not indicate a return to her singer status.
  • After the recent massive oil spill, reports of local residents going so far as to commit suicide because of their troubles have reached a sympathetic Bada, who was moved by the people’s plight and is putting together a charity concert in the name of reviving the local economy of Mallipo Beach in western Korea.
  • Seems like Rain is in the news constantly for one reason or another — and now it’s because apparently the Chinese netizens are angry again. First it was over his participation in singing Samsung’s Olympics theme song — ’cause you know, the only people allowed to sing at any particular Olympics are the citizens of the country hosting it. Now they’re calling him “arrogant” because he turned down Chinese Olympics ambassador (and gold-medalist gymnast) Liu Xuan’s request for a song at an Olympics promotion press conference due to time constraints; they’re saying, “Liu Xuan was dishonored internationally” and “How long would it have taken to sing a few lines?” and “Koreans are impatient and give no leeway so they really seem rude often.” Ahh, nothing like the Olympics to foster discontent. Whatever happened to international harmony, fraternity, and the symbolic Olympic rings?
  • It’s common knowledge that actresses Han Ji Hye and Han Ye Seul are good friends — but who knew they’re also too good to mingle with the masses? Apparently the two go out clubbing — no drinks, just dancing — twice a year: once on each of their birthdays. Actor Lee Chun Hee recalled on a soon-to-air episode of Sang Sang Plus seeing the two at a club before they were famous, dancing together and ignoring any male attempts to approach them. Asked why, Han Ji Hye said that before their debuts, it was because “we had pride.” Afterward, it was because “we knew we were going to be actresses so we decided not to party with anyone else, just dance with the two of us.” Hm, I’m trying to figure out a way to interpret her answer as anything but bratty and stuck-up. Someone tell her pride and ego are different things.
