Awards, awards, awards! And tons of pretty people.

As with yesterday’s MBC Drama Awards, note that winners are decided in part due to popularity, in part due to ratings and politics. That said, I don’t think anyone will argue with their Daesang winner, Shin Ha-kyun (below), who has been tearing it up on Monday and Tuesday nights with medical drama Brain.

Also no surprise was the awarding of runner-up acting prizes to The Princess’s Man‘s pair, Park Shi-hoo and Moon Chae-won (above), which bagged a number of awards.
As did weekend hit Ojakkyo Brothers.

The team behind last year’s hit family drama Sons of Sol Pharmacy (PD Lee Jae-sang and writer Jo Jung-sun) are taking on another weekend family drama, to bring in the new year. Hearts? Prepare to be warmed.

The drama is called Believe in Love (or I Believe in Love), and centers around the bustling family of a vice principal at an all-boys’ high school, played by Song Jae-ho (currently playing the Eeeevil mastermind bad guy in Runaway Plan B). His first son will be played by Lee Jae-ryong (pictured below), from Did We Really Love and Goodbye Solo, who also happens to have been in the first k-drama that I ever watched, the 55-episode family drama What is Love, which soared to 64% ratings back in 1991 (eeep!), when such things were possible.

Buzztastic trendy drama Mary Stayed Out All Night is starting to fill its ranks, as Moon Jung-hee (Oh My Lady, My Sweet Seoul, Air City) joins the cast. She will be playing a femme fatale, upsetting the balance in the Moon Geun-young / Jang Geun-seok couple.

The drama is penned by In Eun-ah, of Goong and Love Marriage, and directed by PD Hong Suk-goo, lauded for his drama specials, Kyung-sook, Kyung-sook’s Father, and Red Candy, starring Park Shi-yeon. So far, so good.

I’m liking the stars, the creative staff, and kind of can’t wait to see Moon Geun-young and Kim Jae-wook in a comedy. We all know Jang Geun-seok is hilarious. But the other two, I’m betting, will be awkward in the best way possible. I know JB hates it when I bring up Cinderella’s Sister, but we saw a few glimpses of Moon’s comedic chops there, albeit in a darkly funny way. (Back when the show had a sense of humor). It’s going to be great to see her play light and breezy.

Besides which, how can one plot have TWO fake contract marriages? It’s almost too good to be true! I can’t wait to find out the writing gymnastics that’ll go on to make that come to fruition. (Since we’re on the subject, Show, I don’t care if it’s farce, but I want it to make sense!)

Moon Jung-hee has an impressive resume full of plays, musicals, dramas, and films, and can be seen most recently in the action film The Fixer.

Mary Stayed Out All Night premiers on KBS on Monday, November 8.

After making her name in drama series like Green Rose, My Girl, and Chuno, Lee Da-hae is ready to make her movie debut. She has been cast in the 3D historical project Song of Springs [현의 노래], a project described as “a movie telling the life story of legendary court musician Woo Reuk, who opened up the world of sound in a world ruled by the sword.”

Woo Reuk was the creator of the gayageum, a classical stringed instrument, and will be played by Lee Sung-jae (Lawyers of Korea). Lee Da-hae’s character is Ara, the top dancer of Daegaya, a city-state of Gaya during the Three Kingdoms era. Film veteran Ahn Sung-ki (The Divine Weapon) plays a Silla general, while Moon Jung-hee (Oh My Lady) portrays a “mysterious woman of Gaya” described as a femme fatale who runs a bar. Speed Scandal‘s young cutie Wang Seok-hyun plays one of Woo Reuk’s students.

Song of Springs is based on a novel written by Kim Hoon and has been in pre-production for six years. It boasts a hefty production budget of 15 billion won and will be directed by Joo Kyung-joong, whose 2002 film A Little Monk won him the best director award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Jazz hands! I was trying to split these intro screenshots equally between Choi Siwon and Chae Rim, but what can I say, dude makes some funny faces.

Well, this is moving faster than I thought it would. In a kdrama, that’s almost always a good thing, since it keeps us on our toes.

Sing it, sista!

In the first four episodes, Oh My Lady hadn’t really wowed me, though it has been cute. Episode 5 ups the game and starts the bonding between Chae Rim and Choi Siwon in earnest, which revs my interest and adds some excitement.

I think the drama is finally getting its emotional footing. I’d been a little worried that it wouldn’t make that emotional connection, so I’m relieved at the signs in this episode.

(By “emotional connection,” I don’t necessarily mean that I want melodrama or angst, specifically. It’s that I want a drama to feel like it has some sort of emotional sincerity, that the characters are built on something genuine, not just cliches of plucky ajummas and spoiled stars.)

Episode 2 continues the light, comic feel of Episode 1. For those of you who felt Episode 1 was too familiar and conventional, plot-wise, perhaps the added complication in Episode 2 will capture your interest. Yes, it’s rather like Speed Scandal: The Drama Version — but hey, who doesn’t want to see the drama version of Speed Scandal?

SBS’s upcoming romantic comedy Oh My Lady! adds another actress to its cast in Moon Jung-hee; the drama places the actress in the familiar world of musicals (Moon used to act in musicals before she transitioned to television with dramas like My Sweet Seoul and Iron Empress). Her character is a top choreographer who will contrast sharply with Chae Rim‘s ordinary ajumma character and the top star played by Choi Siwon.

This is great because I wasn’t too excited about the other supporting actress (Park Han-byul), and Moon is a much more solid actor. She most recently earned praise for her role in the short special drama Father’s House, and also acted in the lauded indie film Cafe Noir, which showed at the last Venice International Film Festival.

Moon participated in the drama’s February 5 script rehearsal; Oh My Lady! will premiere on March 15.
