TV, film, and musical actor Song Chang-eui has been busy lately, recently wrapping up a weekend drama in Life Is Beautiful, in which he was one-half of a much-talked-about gay couple, and now the curtain has also dropped on the Seoul run of Sorrows of Young Werther, his most recent musical role.

The production is based on the tragic, autobiographical Goethe novel in which Werther is a young man in love with a woman who is engaged to another man. Hence the sorrows. Hint: It does not end well for him, although the promotional stills below could probably tell you that. Second hint: Remember what Chekhov said about onstage guns.

Child-actor-turned-budding-adolescent-actor Lee Hyun-woo is expanding his acting scope and taking to the stage for a musical production of Footloose, where he’ll play the leading role of Ren, famously played by Kevin Bacon in the original movie. The character’s a city boy who moves to a small town that has banned dancing and rock ‘n roll. Naturally, he shakes things up a little.

Lee Hyun-woo has been building up his resume playing child roles in a number of large-scale productions over the past several years, such as Legend, Great King Sejong, Return of Iljimae, and Queen Seon-deok. But you may remember him best as the cute and loyal Chan-doo in God of Study, where he showed some of his dance skills — which’ll no doubt serve him well in Footloose — as well as a warm, empathetic appeal.

Although just 17, Lee has been making more of an impression with every role, and I have found him adorable AND charismatic in his roles. A deadly combination for the noonas. He’s one to watch in the future, for sure.

Lee will also be seen in the baseball movie G-Love, which I mentioned in the past when it cast Kim Hye-sung alongside Jung Jae-yong.

Footloose will run from December 10 through February 6.

…called…wait for it…NUNSENSATION. I kid you not. Really, I couldn’t make this stuff up if I tried.

It’s Nunsense! No, it’s NunsenSATION! A sequel to the original Broadway musical Nunsense (1985) about a group of nuns who put on a show, Nunsensation is the Las Vegas-based sequel that sends the group of singing and dancing nuns to…headline a cabaret show? Okay, clearly I haven’t seen this, so I might be missing that crucial logical link that gets us from the convent to the casinos. Just a thought. Either way, sounds totally wacky. To top it off, apparently one of the sisters hits the jackpot (are nuns allowed to gamble?) and hijinks ensue.

Two years ago, Jo Seung-woo made a quiet entry into military service, and he made an equally quiet discharge on October 22. In fact, he took particular pains to effect a stealth exit, as he was initially scheduled to make his official discharge the next day. However, he was able to use unclaimed leave days to move up his discharge by a day.

A rep from his side explained his reasoning for the move, saying that it’s because “He feels that he hasn’t done anything special in going to the army because it’s something all men must do. He wanted to do it as others do.” To make up for his secret departure, he will hold a press conference on the 25th, where he’ll answer questions about his service and acting comeback plans.

Speaking of which, Jo has announced that his comeback project will be in the stage musical Jekyll and Hyde, which is a role he has played before, to great acclaim. (Watch the video clip of his performance, singing the production’s most popular number. He really does have a remarkable singing voice.) He has also acted in stage productions of Hedwig and Rent.

I’ve been mentioning Kang Ji-hwan‘s musical for a while, and Cafe In has finally lifted the curtain on its Tokyo Globe Theater run with its opening show on October 16.

The following are photos taken from that first performance, which features Kang in a comic-melo performance playing two roles: as a playboy sommelier, and as a friendly date coach. Kang received a standing ovation for his performance, and gave fans a little something extra with a prepared encore number.

Song Chang-eui is no stranger to musicals, and has shown quite a versatile range in the roles he’s taken on throughout his career. Of note is his current turn as an openly gay man in SBS’s Life is Beautiful.

Film and musical actor Jo Seung-woo (Tazza) is currently serving in the military, but with his discharge fast approaching (October), interest is heating up about his next career move. There are reports that he will return in the musical Jekyll and Hyde, which he has acted in before. (Watch clip below.) His management gave a more cautious answer but confirmed that Jo is “considering it seriously.”

Jekyll and Hyde is scheduled to raise its curtain on November 28 in Seoul and will run for five months. Jo will be released from military service at the end of October, so he’ll have to jump right into rehearsals.

This musical is the one that solidified 30-year-old Jo’s status as a bona fide musical star. He debuted in 1999 in the film Chunhyang, then went on to act in The Classic, Love Phobia, Tazza, and Go Go 70′s. His most recent project before serving army duty was The Sword With No Name, a historical romance-melodrama with Su Ae.

Here Jo Seung-wo performs the famous solo from Jekyll and Hyde, “This Is the Moment”:

With the drama Coffee House out of the way, now Kang Ji-hwan is turning his attention to his next role, which comes in a musical called Caffeine (Cafe In). (The word is a pun on “caffeine,” although promos show the English word written as “Cafe In.”)

The story unfolds around a female barista who’s unsuccessful in dating and a playboy sommelier who coaches her in romance. It’s a pretty standard romantic-comedy setup, although I suppose the musical angle gives this one its own character. This is actually Season 2, after the initial musical performed strongly nearly two years ago.

Anticipation for the production jumped when Kang first announced his participation back in May, and he’ll serve both his Korean and Japanese fanbases — he produces the musical in Korea and stars in the production in Japan. (As far as I can tell, he won’t be acting in the Korean run.) The show will open at Seoul’s Daehakro Art One Center on August 4, then moves to Japan in October. Kang Ji-hwan launched right into rehearsals after Coffee House wrapped, and will take the stage in Tokyo on October 16.

Now THIS I can see!: Dong Bang Shin Ki’s leader U-Know Yunho has been cast in the lead role of Prince Shin in the musical adaptation of the phenomenally popular drama series Goong, playing the role originated by Joo Ji-hoon in the drama version.

Too bad this couldn’t have been Yunho’s acting debut, rather than the ill-fated and flaw-ridden soccer drama Heading to the Ground. As the leader of a hugely popular idol band, Yunho has already proven his dancing and singing skills, and making the transition from the pop stage to the musical stage seems more suited to him (and more forgiving a jump should he falter). Taking the lead role in a drama series as his acting debut was, unfortunately, biting off more than he could chew, but I’d actually really love to see him in the musical.

The musical version of Goong is produced by Group Eight and will open at the Seoul National Museum’s theater on September 8.
