Nam Sang-mi in January’s Sure magazine

Nam Sang-mi can be currently seen rocking the retro in the ’60s-’70s-’80s drama Light and Shadow, but she’s back to modern for Sure magazine’s January issue, which is where these photos come from.

Apparently this Sure spread takes a cue from her showbiz-set drama by taking the theme “The show must go on”… which I can’t see anywhere, frankly. These magazine shoots hardly ever really make sense of their supposed concepts, but I don’t know that you can cull “showbiz” from anything in it. It could just as easily have been called “romantic lovely lady” or another of those random string of adjectives the ladymags like to string together haphazardly. (You know: “Classic tousled elegant.” “Funky elegant bohemian.” “Shiny happy people holding hands.”)

Light and Shadow’s groovy ’60s-themed promos

Posters and teasers are out for MBC’s special 50th-anniversary drama production, Light and Shadow, which follows the lives of entertainers through the ’60s, ’70s, all the way up to present day. As if you couldn’t tell from the clothes. Groovy.

(Although, does anything else think the costumes and hairdos are straight out of a stage production about the 1960s, rather than an actual, realistic period look? I’m half-expecting them to burst out into a chorus from Hairspray, or some such.)

The first video clip below isn’t so much a trailer as it is an introduction to the concept of the show, explaining that all the beloved hits of the bygone eras will be revived for the drama. I can see that being a huge blast of welcome for the older Korean set, but I wonder how that’ll translate to the younger viewers, both at home and abroad.

Character stills from MBC’s Light and Shadow

Okay, how adorable are they? Above, Nam Sang-mi strikes a singer pose in a shoot for the upcoming drama Light and Shadow alongside a co-star. The series is a special production from MBC as part of the broadcaster’s 50th-year anniversary, and follows the lives and careers of performers in an entertainers’ troupe, covering several decades from the 1960s onward.

That explains the looks, which can only be described as retro fabulous, for series stars Ahn Jae-wook, Lee Pil-mo, and Sohn Dam-bi, as well as Nam. It seems as though Ahn will be the big star, while Nam plays a newer performer who’s on the rise. (I presume from the glitzy looks that Sohn and Lee are on the same path.)

Why, hello there, ’70s. You are making quite a comeback this season, aren’t you?

First we had Jang Geun-seok and Yoon-ah’s Love Rain, which is set partly in the ’70s and partly in the present. Now Light and Shadow, an upcoming MBC drama, joins them in the retro department; here are stills featuring the drama’s four main characters, all dolled up and stylin’ in their old-school fashions (although I think technically these may be closer to the ’60s).

Nam Sang-mi and Lee Pil-mo join Light and Shadow

MBC’s 50th anniversary special presentation drama Light and Shadow has squared off its main cast with leading lady Nam Sang-mi and second lead Lee Pil-mo. They’ll be joining Ahn Jae-wook and Son Dambi in the epic story of one stage entertainer’s life, spanning 50 years of Korea’s history as a backdrop.

16th Busan International Film Festival’s opening red carpet

The 16th Busan International Film Festival opened on October 6, and the red carpet to the opening screening — So Ji-sub and Han Hyo-joo’s tragic romance Only You — was awash with stars.

(For those of you used to seeing the festival called PIFF, it recently changed its spelling. The festival is in its 16th year and began back when the city was spelled Pusan. The spelling of the southern city officially changed to Busan in 2000, but the festival kept its former spelling, which naturally led to some confusion. Yeah, the Korean romanization system changes hasn’t been the most easy to follow.)

It’s been a while since we’ve had a big, star-packed red carpet, but this reminds me that we’re heading into awards season, and will soon be seeing lots of events like this. Which means, lots and lots of red carpets to ooh over, or, as the case may be, snark.

There were some questionable outfits (always fun), but overall I really like what I saw, even if there was an overwhelming trend toward leg slits Up To There and a good amount of side-boob. But the colors! Yay for colors!

Upcoming MBC special 50th anniversary drama Light and Shadow has had drama veteran Ahn Jae-wook‘s name attached as the leading man for some time. Now he’s confirmed for the lead, and joining him is… Son Dambi? I thought at first they were paired together as leads which would be So. Strange. But it looks like she’s confirmed for the second lead. Ahhhhh… all is right with the world. It’s not so much the twelve-year age gap (that, I can stomach) but the…uh… acting gap that had me confused. But hey, I guess we’ve seen weirder pairings work before.

Song Seung-heon, Nam Sang-mi up for SBS drama?

Rumors are swirling about Song Seung-heon (My Princess) being cast as the lead in the upcoming drama Forget Me Not, as well as actress Nam Sang-mi (Life Is Beautiful), although neither is a lock yet. However, it’s been teased that the drama will feature a main couple at the “top star level,” and both would fit that designation, though perhaps Song more than Nam.

It’s interesting news (at least, to me) because (1) it’s Song Seung-heon, Mr. Big-Time Leading Man (also Hand Towel extraordinaire), and (2) the drama is by Kim Soo-hyun — the respected writer, not the Dream High/Giant budding star, and (3) the two abovementioned things seem at odds with each other.

Nam Sang-mi back in Life Is Beautiful

Looks like the disagreement is at an end: actress Nam Sang-mi has officially signed back on to the upcoming drama Life Is Beautiful, only a week after dropping out due to a “difference of opinion” with producers that could not be resolved (at the time). The drama has also added another actress, Yoo Min, as well as being the drama (but not acting) debut of former Seeya singer Nam Gyuri.

Yoo Min is the stage name of Japanese actress Fueki Yuko, who has a number of Korean dramas to her credit, including Bad Housewife, Wuri’s Family, and All In. She also had a recent stint on IRIS portraying a Japanese spy. In Jeju Island-based Life is Beautiful, she plays a cheerful Korean woman who grew up in Japan, who falls for Song Chang-eui‘s character. Nam, meanwhile, plays a cute, mid-twentysomething young woman with an affectionate relationship with her doting parents and a lot of popularity with men.

The drama premieres on March 13 following SBS’s Smile.

Nam Sang-mi leaves drama over “difference of opinion”

Nam Sang-mi had been cast in “language master” writer Kim Soo-hyun’s upcoming drama series Life Is Beautiful, but has quit at this late date; filming is to begin in two weeks and the drama set to air one to two months hence.

Nam’s role in this drama would have come closely on the heels of her recent KBS series Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang, which ended on December 29. She had already participated in the script reading on January 7 and showed enthusiasm for joining Kim Soo-hyun’s “team” of actors. (The writer has penned hit series after hit series, such as Mom’s Dead Upset and My Man’s Woman, and often uses actors in follow-up projects; therefore, actors usually treat it as something of an honor to be cast in her dramas.) However, a last-minute “difference of opinion” arose between Nam and the producers. Nam’s side said merely, “Because of complicated issues, we had no choice but to make this decision.”

That’s too bad, since I have a soft spot for Nam Sang-mi, who acts with an endearing bubbliness, and was looking forward to seeing her paired with Song Chang-eui. Life Is Beautiful is set in Jeju Island and has also cast Kim Hae-sook, Jang Mi-hee, Kim Sang-joong, Lee Sang-yoon, and Nam Gyu-ri. It airs on SBS in March.
