This Time it’s More Like Zen Annoyance

OMG you guys.

So by now you’ve all heard my big server upgrade moan-and-groan story. Over the weekend, I upgraded from shared hosting (which was killing me with limiting my CPU restrictions, which build up very quickly when highly trafficked). I’d outgrown my little shared hosting plan and needed my own space.

And now, thanks to Coffee Prince, in TWO DAYS I have outgrown my basic VPS plan and have had to upgrade once again. I can’t be too upset because I say with pride that I have entirely Coffee Prince’s popularity to blame, and who can hold a grudge against that?

In the ONE HOUR that I’ve posted the Tenth Cup summary, my site went down five times. I know this because I was worried it would max out and have been closely monitoring my levels. The instant the server overloaded (ran out of memory) I restarted it. Sorry for the choppy hour, guys.

I’ve since upgraded to the next level with much more ram, and now, instead of operating at 98% levels of capacity (I freaked out when the techie pointed out the chart to me), I’m at a comfortable 53%. Phew.

I REALLY think this is going to be the last of my issues. And rock on, Coffee Prince!!

(By the way, just in case you’re wondering about this “zen” business, I commented in my darkest hours of techie-related aggravation that I was trying to be zen. But that if things did not improve, I would have to resort to inventing a new violent strain of zen.)

Dramabeans, Now With More Zen Violence

dramabeans-now-with-more-zen-violence

Dare I say it? … dare I hope? …

…that the site is now working?

If you’ve dropped by anytime in the past two days, you’ll have noticed lots of weirdness. You may have noticed that I’d posted two posts that have since disappeared — they were both just there to let you know of possible site issues, so I decided not to break my brain retrieving them when they were lost in the transfer. All the important stuff is still here. Some of the most recent comments may have also been lost — there weren’t too many, but sorry if they did!

I’ve noticed that the transfer managed to drop every single thing written in Korean. I can’t understand why since I transferred my SQL databases exactly as is, and it’ll be a big pain to go back and fix them all (I started to, but I didn’t realize how many posts I have. Damn, I write a lot). But at this point I’m not complaining because I’m just glad that’s my only issue. So if you’re confused at all those ??????’s, I’m working on it!

I hesitate to rejoice fully, but in case you’re interested in hearing more about the harrowing travails of moving a server (which really, really should not be a difficult process), read on! And even if you don’t care about that, I’m throwing up lots of really random songs — they have nothing in common, aside from the fact that they’re just songs I felt like posting. I usually make it a point only to post up songs by Korean artists, but now that I’m freed of the shackles of restrictive hosting, I’m in a not-caring-about-the-rules kind of mood. I’m just gonna make the most of my new resources. :)

Die, hotlinks, die.

Hey people, I love you and all, but will you please STOP HOTLINKING MY FILES?? I’ve gone and had to re-upload a bunch of my files already because of this.

In case you aren’t sure what that means, hotlinking is linking directly to my image or mp3 by posting it somewhere else. (Posting the image to display, that is. Posting the link is no problem.) I’m totally cool with you saving the file to your own computers, then uploading them to another server to display on your sites/blogs/forums. There are tons of free photosharing options available, like imageshack, flickr, and photobucket.

The reason hotlinking is bad is because it stresses my server and thus, this site is affected by all the bandwidth that gets siphoned away from these links. ESPECIALLY if you’re linking on a forum, particularly a highly trafficked one. Every time a page is refreshed — in any of the forums it’s posted, not just here — that takes my bandwidth. You know all these annoying error messages that occasionally pop up here? Hotlinking only makes it worse.

THANK YOU AND ENJOY!

Getting settled

getting-settled

Sorry for the lack of updates; I’ve been trying to get acquainted to this site, transferring files and fixing glitches, so I’ve been a little behind in the usual recaps (Flowers 14 will be up soon, promise! Then there are the new Bad Couple, Air City… sigh, so much to watch…).

If you see anything that looks weird, I probably messed something up and am working to fix it. Some recent glitches (now fixed) are non-playing audio, missing header, weird ad placement, imported comment errors… If something’s wrong, I’m probably tearing out my hair trying to fix it, but if it remains broken for a while, please let me know!

I’ve fiddled around and found a few additions, like rotating header that should change every time you refresh. If it doesn’t change, the image is probably cached in your browser; hit control + F5 to force reload.

All right, back to work.

Soulstar - “Under Your Love.” I love a cappella. They kind of remind me of a Korean Boyz II Men. [ zShare download ]

Moving in

moving-in

I’ve moved!

Please update bookmarks and feeds and all that good stuff. The javabeans.wordpress.com site will stay up indefinitely, but I’ll be updating here instead.

I’d been thinking of upgrading to my own host for a while now, but I’m lazy. I should’ve done it earlier — it’s a pain moving once you’re settled in. I love Wordpress.com, but I’m amazed at how quickly I outgrew their services and found myself itching to play around a little more. And finally, thanks to the lovely mily2, I moved off my butt AND got the idea for the new domain name.

Why Dramabeans? Partly because I wasn’t going to spend $5,000 to buy Javabeans.com. Also because someone once misheard “javabeans” as “dramabeans,” and I thought, how appropriate.

It’s basically the same as before, but few nifty features here include:

  • Much, much more web space! Now I can post files without feeling guilty for encroaching on my file limit.
  • You guys can now edit your own comments! You can only edit them within 10 minutes after the initial post, but that should be enough to fix any errors, etc. If it’s not, you can always post another comment. :D (If you’d like a bigger window of time, let me know and I should be able to tweak it.)
  • Spoiler tags! I’m not sure if I’ll be using them yet, but it’s a nifty feature.
  • Ads. Yep, I’ve sold out. I’d been resistant to the idea, but I figure if I spent all this time on this blog, a few pennies never hurt. If I end up hating them, I’ll remove them.
  • And lots of other little details that only matter on my end.

I’m betting there are tons of little bugs in some of the older posts, which I’ll be fixing slowly. Thanks for moving along with me!
