Enlisted celebrities participate in Army concert

Once actors go off to fulfill their two years of military service, it’s not often that we get to see them in the public eye until their discharge. So it’s nice to see a few of the currently enlisted entertainers together onstage for the 2009 Army Concert, which took place in Seoul on the evening of October 31.

Some of the celebrities who participated were actors Jae Hee (Three Dads One Mom), Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower), Lee Dong-wook (Partner), Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini), and Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police). On the kpop side, there were singer-actors Yang Dong-geun (I Am Sam), Lee Jung (Hometown of Legends), and Kim Jung-hoon (Goong), as well as singers Sung Shi-kyung, Tony An.

Two more actors head off for army training

As announced, two actors joined the ranks of their enlisted entertainment brethren in fulfilling their mandatory military obligation on October 27.

Voluntary air force enlister, the 25-year-old Ohn Joo-wan (My Mighty Princess, The Peter Pan Formula), and 29-year-old gentle-faced actor Ryu Soo-young (Bad Couple, Seoul 1945) both said their goodbyes on Monday afternoon before heading off to the training center in Nonsan, North Chungcheong province.

Y’know, looking through the photos of all these guys heading off to enlist, I’ve noticed with how they’re always so self-conscious and embarrassed about their newly cropped hair. You’d think by now that they’d have gotten used to showing all sides of their appearance in their acting projects, but that doesn’t stop them from responding to the loss of their usually fashionably styled locks as though they’ve lost their security blankets.

Ohn Joo-wan volunteers for early service

And the guys keep dropping off to enlist. This time the enlistee is going off a little earlier than most entertainers (while normal civilians tend to get it over with in their early twenties, a lot of celebrities, loath to interrupt career momentum, push it off as long as possible and we tend to see them go off when they’re 28 or 29).

Actor Ohn Joo-wan (My Mighty Princess, Chosun Police, City of Violence) is only 25 years old, but already he is volunteering for military enlistment in the air force.

His management said, “Ohn Joo-hwan has always talked about wanting to serve in the military, and after deliberating, he decided to do his active duty this year… Joining the air force has always been his dream, so he’s received his physical exam and been deemed fit to serve.”

Ohn had suffered a few on-the-job injuries, including a burst eardrum while filming the swimming-related The Peter Pan Formula and a fall from a horse while shooting Chosun Police. He reportedly worked extra hard to get back into top shape in order to enlist as first-class status. He also spent a lot of time listening to the advice of older entertainers who’d already returned from active duty, such as Yoon Kye-sang.

He said, “I won’t be able to see you for the next two years, but please don’t forget me, and I will return in more projects as a better person, a better man, and a better actor.”

Ohn Joo-hwan will enlist tomorrow, on October 27. His most recent film, My Mighty Princess, co-starred Shin Mina and Yoo Gun and opened in June.

Happy colors = happy smiles

Shin Mina looks positively radiant as she promotes her upcoming romantic action comedy film Mulim Girl [무림여대생], also starring Ohn Joo Wan and Yoo Gun. Everyone looks happy and upbeat, if a little vampiric (is that some harsh lighting or what?). Not vampiric in a negative sense, just the sense of looking like they haven’t collectively seen sunlight in years and need the blood of others to survive because they no longer possess any of their own.

Seoul, Apgujung, June 3. The film releases on June 26.
