Finally! And yay!

Park Bo-young is ending an involuntary two-year hiatus with a new movie. Already a top-flight actress at the age of 20, she has fielded numerous offers from films and dramas and has settled on She’s Looking At Me [그녀가 날봐요], a “human melodrama” (which basically means a drama with a lighter touch and a focus on relationships).

She reportedly decided to take the role without hesitation after falling in love with the screenplay, which she read in one go. Her role is described as an extremely charming character who has a personality disorder that renders her unable to express her feelings. She meets a timid guy named Ji-ho, and thus begins their love connection.

Park’s last project, 2008′s hit comedy Speed Scandal, shot her to superstardom and currently stands in the top ten list of Korea’s box office runs of all time, with more than 8.5 million admissions. Due to a series of legal battles involving her management company and another film production house, Park has been unable to act in the intervening time, and her comeback has been highly anticipated for some time.

She’s Looking At Me is still casting, and will begin shooting at the end of October.

More than two years after it was first aired, KBS’s award-winning youth drama Jungle Fish is getting a re-edit into a movie version, and will get a special theatrical release.

This comes in conjunction with the opening of the second season, which kicks off this week and features some current rising stars, including T-ara’s Jiyeon, Ghost‘s (and Oh My Lady’s) Hong Jong-hyun, and MBLAQ’s Lee Joon. Jungle Fish 2 will air 8 episodes, the first premiering on September 25.

The original Jungle Fish was praised for tackling a serious issue in a fresh way, bringing together the topics of school cheating, competitive academic standards, and interactive blogging. Plus, three of its stars have gone on to greater success since starring in it: Park Bo-young, Kim Soo-hyun, and 2PM’s Chansung.

Park Bo-young has finally settled the legal battle with her management company, Humane Entertainment, which hopefully means that we’ll be able to see her back onscreen soon. (Finally!)

Back in April, Park had filed a complaint against her management company alleging forgery of documents and requesting the termination of her contract. However, in June the company was acquitted and she faced the possibility of being countersued for defamation and libel. She faced an additional lawsuit, explained here, in which she and her company were accused by a film production company of reneging on a movie role. She was cleared of those allegations.

I love Park Bo-young, who has a wonderful presence and solid acting chops for one of her tender years. She has had a number of memorable roles in dramas and films (King and I, Our High School E.T., Secret Campus), but it was really the brisk comedy Speed Scandal, where she played a young unwed mother, that solidified her star status. It was a bummer that she would be kept from acting due to legal reasons, so I hope we see her back in action right away.

Park Bo-young, Park Shin-hye, and Sulli were all rumored for Playful Kiss

If you’ve been following Korean dramas for a while, you probably have noticed a tendency for productions to make casting announcements before things are entirely finalized. Sometimes those initial reports will go on to be confirmed, and sometimes the reports will be followed by a mad flurry of denials, retractions, and internet drama.

Case in point: Playful Kiss, the manga adaptation in the works for this fall. I don’t know what it is about this particular drama that has spurred such madness — maybe it’s a sign of anticipation, or because it is such a potential idol-magnet and we’ve got a number of idols champing at the bit to make their crossovers. Whatever the rationale, the drama has been a breeding ground for false or exaggerated casting news.
