It’s finale week for Birth of the Rich, Jejoongwon

This week saw the finales of two Monday-Tuesday dramas, KBS’s comedic Birth of the Rich and SBS’s medical-themed period drama Jejoongwon. The former enjoyed enough of a response to extend its series by four episodes, for a total of 20. The latter began in January and wrapped up its four-month-long broadcast with Episode 36.

Both dramas have fallen in viewership behind MBC’s Dong Yi in recent weeks, which has broken the 20% mark, but viewers have expressed overall satisfaction with their endings.

Jejoongwon’s production press conference

December 23 was production press conference day for SBS’s upcoming medical period drama, Jejoongwon. The cast came dressed in character in their 1880s attire.

In addition to leads Park Yong-woo, Yeon Jung-hoon, and Han Hye-jin, also featured are Sean Richard; a new actress with a famous name, Kim Tae-hee; and former Misuda (Chitchat With Beautiful Ladies) panelist Baillie Catherine Dewar, who hails from New Zealand.

Promo photos for Jejoongwon

My interest in SBS’s medical period drama Jejoongwon just shot up from zero to sixty (okay, maybe zero to forty) with these new promo photos. I knew in my head that with this cast and this writer (Lee Ki-won of White Tower, one of the best kdramas in the contemporary medical genre), the drama was likely to be good. But these photos give me a tangible sense of the time and the look of the show, and I like it. A lot.

Jejoongwon’s production team at prayer ceremony

Is that not a beautiful photo? Jejoongwon [제중원], the drama also called the “Joseon-era White Tower,” held its customary opening prayer ceremony on the afternoon of October 14 as the series heads into filming.

Jejoongwon has been steadily preparing its production over the past year and is the follow-up for writer Lee Ki-won, who wrote the excellent contemporary medical drama White Tower, which starred Kim Myung-min in a standout performance as an ambitious surgical genius. Jejoongwon is the name of Korea’s first modern hospital which opened in the late 19th century, and stars East of Eden‘s Yeon Jung-hoon as a nobleman who gives up his privileged status to enter its ranks.

The drama had previously been looking at a late fall showing, but now has announced that it will air on SBS early next year, premiering January 4.

Yeon Jung-hoon leads Joseon-era White Tower

Actor Yeon Jung-hoon of East of Eden (and husband to Han Ga-in) is coming back with a new series, Jejoongwon [제중원], a historical drama set in the world of early modern medicine in Korea. He’ll be acting alongside Terroir‘s Han Hye-jin, who has already been cast as a doctor. Jejoongwon is the name of a school teaching Western medicine that was opened in 1885.

This SBS drama will be yet another to challenge MBC’s hit sageuk series Queen Seon-deok, which has prevailed against many contenders thus far. (It’s currently kicking butt against Dream and The Man Who Can’t Get Married; previous competing dramas that faltered in the ratings against it include Ja Myung Go and Story of a Man.) Seon-deok isn’t quite up to Jumong levels yet, but may be by the end of the year when Jejoongwon airs.

Yeon Jung-hoon will play a man born of an aristocratic family who cuts off his topknot (symbolizing a break with tradition) and joins the school to become a doctor. His character has intuitive judgment, confident bearing, and a cool personality.

One reason to anticipate Jejoongwon: the writer Lee Ki-won wrote the contemporary medical drama White Tower, which showcased a brilliant Kim Myung-min as a modern medical genius. Will Yeon Jung-hoon, Han Hye-jin, and Park Yong-woo be able to do the same in a Joseon-era hospital?

Jejoongwon will begin shooting in late August, and plans to go on air in November. Yeon Jung-hoon was most recently seen in the first couple episodes of Dream, which Jaejoongwon follows on Mondays and Tuesdays (perhaps with another drama in between; Dream‘s official successor has not yet been announced).

SBS lines up new medical sageuk

SBS has another historical drama planned for Mondays and Tuesdays, which brings Han Hye-jin (Terroir) back to the sageuk genre following her turn in Jumong two years ago. The drama is Jejoongwon [제중원], which is the first modern hospital in Korea established in the Joseon era in the year 1886. Han takes the lead role opposite the already cast Park Yong-woo (Cell Phone).

This should be interesting with PD Hong Chang-wook of Scale of Providence and Catch a Kangnam Mother directing, but even more so for writer Lee Ki-won, who wrote the Korean version of White Tower (and Spotlight, but we can forget about that one). He was tremendously successful in bringing to life the tensions and political maneuverings within a hospital of ambitious doctors in a modern setting; will that translate to a historical setting?

Park Yong-woo plays a man who overcomes adversity to succeed as a doctor. Han Hye-jin plays a character representing the “modern woman” of the age who becomes a doctor and shares a romantic loveline with Park.

Jejoongwon will enter filming in July and is looking at an October premiere.

Will Cell Phone get a Hollywood remake?

There’s a lot of news out currently about the thriller Cell Phone, mostly because of its theatrical release this week.

Reportedly, licensing negotiations are under way for a Hollywood remake of the thriller, which stars two great actors, Uhm Tae-woong (Devil) and Park Yong-woo (My Scary Girl). That sure is fast; these talks began in advance of the premiere, as the movie just came out today (the 19th).

A representative from M-LINE, the company in charge of overseas sales, explained that the negotiations are with a “major agency,” which grew interested after seeing the screenplay while the film was still in production. That interest grew upon seeing a preview of the film at the recent Berlin Film Festival’s sales market, after which they officially broached the topic of negotiations. (Following Berlin, producers received inquiries of licensing rights for a Japanese remake as well.)

The plot involves a cell-phone-dependent CEO (Uhm Tae-woong) whose mobile falls into the wrong hands. Park Yong-woo is the bad guy who threatens evilry; plot twistiness ensues.

I can see the appeal of a remake, actually; it’s the kind of story that’s adaptable across cultures. With Uhm and Park — and director Kim Han-min of Paradise Murdered — I have high expectations of this film. Without them, though? Eh. Could go either way.

An early look at Cell Phone

The teaser poster is out for the upcoming “Chaser-like” cell phone thriller called, well, Cell Phone. While I didn’t care for the U.S. film Cellular, the plots don’t look TOO similar; and though the story doesn’t sound all that exciting on first glance, it stars actors I do like: Uhm Tae-woong and Park Yong-woo.

In the movie, Uhm (You’re Far Away, Devil) plays an entertainment company CEO who “can’t live without his cell phone.” He loses the device by accident (of course), after which he receives a message threatening to make nefarious use of the information contained therein. The cat and mouse game ensues as Uhm’s character searches for Park (Once Upon a Time, My Scary Girl), known merely as the “Bad Guy,” whose intentions remain a mystery and masked by his clever maneuvering.

The film is directed by Paradise Murdered‘s Kim Han-min and set for a February 2009 release.
