MBC’s You’ve Fallen For Me has had some behind-the-scenes change-ups recently, notably with its director switching to writer status, and it looks like that change — initially deemed merely short-term — is going to stick. PD Pyo Min-su hasn’t returned to the set since leaving it, and producers say that it’s not likely that he’ll be able to return to directing.

Pyo switched roles after Episode 4 of the drama had been shot, in an effort to tighten up what audiences called a scattered plot. He was originally only planning to stay in that position until a newly added scriptwriter got situated and the story stabilized. From audience reaction, it seems the tactic worked in improving the story, even if it didn’t revive the flagging ratings.

I wonder if this means the scriptwriters aren’t working out. Pyo’s role isn’t so strange to those of us familiar with American television production — he’s the showrunner (head honcho who oversees the writer’s room, with final say over creative choices and a hand in steering the direction, even if he doesn’t do the directing himself) — but it’s a situation unfamiliar in the K-drama system, and as a result there are a lot of confused and even over-dramatic media reports about the shaky status of this series.

Granted, You’ve Fallen For Me has been hit with a few setbacks, so I can see why people are nervous. On top of the writing issues, there was Park Shin-hye‘s car accident, which required some script adjustments so that she could continue to film without stressing her injury. But I wouldn’t go so far as to call this production beleaguered (that’s a little dramatic — it ain’t no Poseidon).

PD Pyo has kept his comments careful, stating that he may still return to the director’s chair, even if it’s unclear when he thinks that’ll be. Currently, the shooting is split between three teams, under the watch of two other directors.

Alas, ratings are not doing so hot; this week’s Episodes 8 and 9 netted a 6.5% and a 5.0%, respectively.

Rumors have been swirling about possible changes in the direction of You’ve Fallen For Me — namely, that PD Pyo Min-su is being replaced — which have been refuted by the production and Pyo, who have confirmed that he is not leaving.

That doesn’t mean the rumors were entirely groundless: For the past few days, Pyo hasn’t been seen on the set, setting off speculation that he’d leave the production as penance for low ratings. In actuality, it’s because he is turning his focus away from directing for the immediate future so he can work on scripts.

PD Pyo, who directed episodes 1 through 4, acknowledged certain issues raised by the viewers, such as its “unfocused plot.” He agreed that the plot about getting the big 100-year anniversary musical on its feet has pushed aside the four leads’ own stories, but asserted that the following episodes would bring things back to them.

So it looks like your creative juices have not been wasted. Upcoming campus music youth drama Festival, which now bears the Korean title You’ve Fallen for Me, has been officially renamed with the English title Heartstrings by production company JS Pictures. You can check it out here at DramaFever.

I didn’t really think it was likely that they’d take one of the titles with Stupid in it, though I found them all amusing. It does have to sell internationally with that title, so it’s probably not the first impression they want to give? But everyone’s ideas were really fun to read.

Heartstrings has also added Jung Seo-won to its cast, who you’ll probably remember as the hilarious stuntman-sunbae to Ha Ji-won in Secret Garden. He was actually really adorable in a role that could’ve been forgettable, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of him in dramaland. He’ll be playing the right-hand man to Song Chang-eui‘s character, who will be heading up the theater production department at the arts university.

PD Pyo Min-soo‘s Heartstrings / You’ve Fallen for Me / Festival (Yeesh, THAT’s gonna be fun to google.) stars Park Shin-hye and Jung Yong-hwa, and premieres June 29 on MBC.

SBS’s Coffee House is currently on hold till next week; two weeks were postponed due to World Cup coverage. This Elle interview with Park Shi-yeon and PD Pyo Min-soo actually came out last month — just before the drama aired — but I figured this would be a good time to get in a dose of Coffee House while we’re waiting for new episodes.

In PD Pyo Min-soo’s dramas, there are real people. Those real people show real expressions when they suffer troubles. There is love. The name Pyo Min-soo is a symbol of that kind of trust. SBS’s Coffee House is a drama he made while thinking of ways he could become happier. And Park Shi-yeon, who leads this drama with him, says without hesitation that she is happy.

This ought to make fans happy. The stars of two of the most popular kdramas of recent years, Full House and My Name Is Kim Samsoon, have been cast together in a new drama, The World They Live In.

Song Hye Gyo and Hyun Bin, both 26, have been confirmed as the leads in the new drama by PD Pyo Min Su (Full House, What Star Did You Come From, Insoon Is Pretty) and writer Noh Hee Kyung (Goodbye Solo, Several Questions that Make Us Happy).

This marks Song Hye Gyo’s return to television after four years away (her last TV role was 2004′s Full House); since then, she’s had an unremarkable turn attempting a film career with the romantic drama My Girl and I (co-starring Cha Tae Hyun) and the disappointing large-scale epic Hwang Jini (with Yoo Ji Tae). She’s also been working on a U.S. debut in the low-budget U.S. indie flick Fetish — which doesn’t sound terribly appealing to me.

Hyun Bin may have shot to national heartthrob status after Samsoon ended in 2005, but his follow-up starring in The Snow Queen had a disappointing broadcast run in 2006, and this is his first project back since then.

Apparently Song Hye Gyo was PD Pyo’s top choice, and was sent the synopsis early. Her character is described as strong and straightforward, conveying a mature image as a professional woman; both she and Hyun Bin play drama PDs at a broadcast station. The World They Live In plans to air on KBS in November.

I’m not sure about this — it could be entertaining. I’m a little bored with dramas set in the entertainment world, although at least they aren’t actors. The writer has some good projects under her belt (Goodbye Solo, for instance, which is really a writer’s drama), and despite what I thought was excessive hype for the overrated Full House, I enjoyed watching it, at least until the final run of nonsensical plot turns. As for the stars… I’d say they’re both likable actors, but neither has made a mark through their actual acting talent. Still, it’s one I’ll keep watch for. And hey, we’ll always have the eye candy.

The upcoming KBS Wednesday-Thursday drama Insoon Is Pretty is one I’m keeping my eye on. This is Kim Hyun Joo‘s (above left) comeback drama — although it bugs me that the word ‘comeback’ is misused an awful lot, thrown around to describe anything from a true comeback to merely a star’s next project (summer 2007′s Get Karl Oh Soo Jung was called a “comeback” vehicle for Oh Ji Ho, when his previous drama had only wrapped in December 2006!). Kim Hyun Joo’s last drama was the SBS series Marrying a Millionaire; she’d also previously appeared in Miss Kim’s Quest for a Billion Won and Glass Slippers. Newcomer Seo Hyo-rim (right) has been cast as the younger half-sister to Kim Hyun Joo’s titular Park Insoon. Her “ice princess” role was won after fierce competition in an audition process where she beat out 300 other hopefuls.

The director, Pyo Min Su, has a resume boasting some familiar titles, among them the light-hearted romances What Star Are You From? and Full House — but what catches my attention aren’t the stars or the production, it’s the story. The beautiful Insoon unintentionally kills someone and is sent away to prison — and now has emerged to face the cold judgment of the world, eventually overcoming her struggles as an ex-con to emerge victorious (not a spoiler; that’s the tagline accompanying the story description in all the media stories).

Insoon Is Pretty premieres on October 31 (Halloween!).
