Wow, what a threesome. Big-budget action movie Berlin has confirmed a stellar three-top cast for a game of spy versus spy… versus spy? I mean, what do you DO with three leading men in one movie? Ha Jung-woo (Hwanghae) has just joined Ryu Seung-beom (The Unjust) and Han Seok-kyu (currently headlining SBS sageuk Tree With Deep Roots) in what looks to be the power struggle of the coming year.

Korea’s making a big showing at the Berlin Film Festival, with nine films headed abroad, in competition for jury prizes. A few are films we’ve talked about for a while, like Late Autumn, while a good number of them are experimental films or shorts that are more artistically adventurous. Can’t wait to get my hands on some of these. Also, Binnie’s having some year, isn’t he?

Here’s a list of the films in competition at Berlinale:

Love Me, Love Me Not, by director Lee Yoon-ki, starring Hyun Bin and Im Soo-jung in a melodrama about a married couple on the brink of divorce. (Poster above.) This is THE HAIR that made me go crazy. Is it wrong to watch a movie for a hairdo? Well I don’t care ’cause I’m gonna do it anyway.

I love when real-life couples act as couples in acting projects; that meta awareness adds just a little something extra to the cute. Such is the case with this couple, who are not only adorable together but talented to boot — Gong Hyo-jin (Pasta) and Ryu Seung-beom (No Mercy) — and who have teamed up to endorse a cell phone.

The product is a Motorola brand smart phone, Motorola Defy. I guess that is meant to sound cool, but to me it just sounds like an imperative, and I’m already wary of smart phones being, well, too smart. I don’t need you to add defiance to my phone’s list of capabilities. Just sayin’.

Im Joo-hwan fans, rejoice! 2011 looks like it’ll be a busy year for the rising star, as he adds a film to his resume (in addition to upoming drama What’s Up). The movie is titled Life Is Beautiful, and has already drawn some notice for casting prolific film actor Ryu Seung-beom (Bad Deal) and singer Younha.

Ryu plays a former baseball player who quit the sport after his hot temper led to an accident, and now works at an insurance company. Part of his job is to keep his clients from committing suicide, which sounds like a depressing job but seems, based on the film’s description, like it will take a lightly humorous “human drama” approach. Younha plays an aspiring singer.

Add singer Younha to the ranks of pop idols venturing into acting, as she’s just been cast in a new movie.

It’s not a debut for her; she acted in a short film in 2005 (天使が降りた日: Episode 5 Diaries), which she followed with Next Sunday, both Japanese projects. (Somewhat unusually, Younha debuted in Japan as a singer before debuting in Korea, and is fluent in the language.) This will be her first acting role in a Korean project.

This fall, Eom Ji-won (The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry) stars in the lighthearted sex comedy Festival, about four couples and the various issues that sex introduces into their relationships.

Eom stars opposite Shin Ha-kyun as a woman who buys a vibrator one day, sending her uptight police officer boyfriend into a tizzy about whether or not he can satisfy her. That? Is comedy. They should just do the whole movie about that one couple, because the premise sounds hysterical.

Ryu Seung-beom‘s newest movie, Bang-ja Chronicles, is pretty racy stuff (it’s marketed as an “erotic sageuk” along the lines of Portrait of a Beauty and Frozen Flower), so I suppose it’s fitting that he bares some skin in his W Korea photo shoot, which will be in the magazine’s June issue.

The poster and trailer (watch below) are out for the upcoming Bang-ja Chronicles [방자전], which releases in June. The movie plays with the famous tale of Chun-hyang, which is a story of young lovers in the Joseon era, and stars Kim Joo-hyuk and Ryu Seung-beom.

The film comes from a writer-director who’s familiar with risque material; Kim Dae-woo wrote the script to the 2003 film Untold Scandal, which was an adaptation of Les Liaisons Dangereuses starring Lee Mi-sook, and wrote and directed the 2006 movie Forbidden Quest. Following those racy sageuks, Bang-ja Chronicles has also earned a rating of 19+ for its sexual content.

It’s been a while since we’ve had a sex comedy come out (it seems?): the “bright, sexy romantic comedy” movie Festival has announced its cast, and it’s packed with name actors. Taking the lead are Ryu Seung-beom, Eom Ji-won, and Shin Ha-kyun in the film written and directed by Lee Hae-young of films like No Manners (which he wrote) and Like a Virgin (which he directed).

The movie is set in a “wholesome neighborhood where four suspicious couples live sly lives.” The four groups are arranged as follows:

(1) Thirst‘s husband Shin Ha-kyun pairs with The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry‘s bubbly Eom Ji-won. He’s a frustrated police officer whose confidence in his sexual prowess takes a hit when he discovers his live-in girlfriend’s vibrator. Eom is an English teacher who buys the gadget on a whim and sends her boyfriend into emotional tumult.

(2) Everybody Cha Cha Cha‘s Shim Hye-jin teams with Chuno‘s twisted slave hunter Sung Dong-il. She’s the elegant proprietor of a hanbok shop, but one day finds herself unexpectedly excited at the sight of a whip and handcuffs, and starts to enjoy “a secret private life.” Sung owns a hardware store and is known by neighbors as being a gentle, warm-hearted guy, but that’s because they don’t know what happens after he discovers her interest.

(3) Chungmuro favorite Ryu Seung-beom is back to flexing his comic chops as he couples up with 20-year-old Baek Jin-hee (Bandhobi, Loving You a Thousand Times) as a “mysterious” guy who resists the advances of a high school girl. Despite his non-reaction, she throws herself all over him.

(4) Thirst‘s Oh Dal-soo, who frequently plays comic and/or creepy oddballs, plays a high school teacher with a fetish for the feel of lingerie.

The film will begin filming in March and is aiming for a release later this year.

This should be a treat for fans: Hwang Jung-min and Ryu Seung-beom are acting together again — the two have been cast in the new film Bad Deal [부당거래], a crime thriller that finds the leads wrapped up in a frustrating murder case.

Hwang Jung-min plays a police officer with a keen sense of intuition and outstanding investigation skills. Ryu Seung-beom is a hot-tempered rookie prosecutor who opposes Hwang in every little thing. With the investigation running into complication after complication, the two strike a secret deal that circumvents the police investigation.

This will be Hwang and Ryu’s second time working together, although it was almost their third. After appearing in the 2006 movie Bloody Tie, they had both been cast to work together in director Lee Jun-ik’s upcoming film, Like the Moon Escaping from Clouds, but Ryu ended up dropping out of the project.

Directing is Ryu Seung-wan of action film The City of Violence and action-comedy Dachimawa Lee. Unfair Deal will begin filming in March 2010.
