And now to conclude the Big 3 Broadcaster awards with SBS, featuring some of the most popular dramas of the year. Tree With Deep Roots was the big winner of the night, winning six trophies in total, including the Daesang for Han Seok-kyu, and the Top Excellence Award for Best Drama. There were no big upsets in any category, because they kind of have a category for everyone, but that’s the name of the game. I’m just happy for Han Seok-kyu’s big win, and the fact that he didn’t have to share the glory with any split-award hullabaloo.

Protect the Boss cleaned up as well, winning Best Couple and acting awards for the stars, as well as an additional netizen popularity award for Choi Kang-hee. As expected, Thousand Day Promise had a strong showing in the acting categories, as did fellow melodrama Scent of a Woman. It certainly was the year for tearjerkers. The winners…

All in all, a very satisfying ending. Some strings were tied a little too tightly but I enjoyed the whopping 76 minutes of this finale. I’m left with a warm, sweet feeling, like I had a cup of peppermint tea with ginger snap cookies on the side. I find myself missing the characters already because they were some of the most endearing friends and pitiful enemies that I’ve come across in K-dramaland. Adieu, Me Too, Flower! We’ve had fun.

We get some more plot movement, but I’m afraid my heart feels a little cold. Winter’s hit and Snow Queen Hwa Young’s bitchiness is freezing my love for this drama.

Episode 12

After Bong Sun and Dal hang up, Hwa Young tells Jae Hee to mingle with the guests. He should get to know the Chairman’s daughter. He reluctantly gets up. Dal asks Hwa Young why she’s pushing Jae Hee towards the Chairman’s daughter, and Hwa Young replies that the daughter is someone who matches Jae Hee’s status. Neither Dal nor Jae Hee’s girlfriend are worthy of being with Jae Hee.

The last cat is out of the bag and we’re given more evidence as to why “Bong Sun > Hwa Young.” Jae Hee climbs a baby step towards freeing himself and Dal toes the slinky slutty line.

Bong Sun rushes out past Jae Hee and heads to her car downstairs. As she pulls out the garage, Jae Hee stops in front of the car and slips into the front seat. She doesn’t say anything and continues to drive. She turns the emergency lights on and swerves from lane to lane on the highway as she and Jae Hee try to control their emotions. My driver’s ed teacher would’ve cried at the number of traffic violations that just occurred…

^^ The above picture basically sums up their relationship. So the cute has kind of returned, which made this episode much easier to watch than the last. Our Bong Sun is still broken up about the whole “Jae Hee’s rich” fiasco, and it’s going to be hard to see her trust in him disintegrate further. It annoys me that she has to keep finding out Jae Hee’s secrets through coincidences, but at least the plot is cruising along.

The dramatic reveal has finally taken place and I welcome the shift in power dynamics between the characters. The cute has virtually dissipated and we get way too much of the big bad Hwa Young, which makes this episode the least engaging so far. The cat fights dial up in intensity and Dal is pulled, but not totally sucked into, the dark side.

Wah. The sweetness of this episode makes up for the bipolar mess from the one before. The snappy dialogue between Bong Sun and Jae Hee made their bickering fun, but it can’t beat adorably mushy scenes of affection. I could watch this all day.

Ah, noble idiot syndrome. It’s a standard crutch that our heroes like to lean on to prove to viewers how sacrificial and pure they are. Too bad it’s also one of the most infuriating sicknesses that has ever plagued k-drama land. It’s a close second behind cancer. Fortunately, it hasn’t hit our hero too hard…yet.

I liked this episode much better than the last one. The little interactions between the characters hook me more than plotlines about stolen bags. A lot happened in the span of 70 minutes, which is why the recap seems longer today. Also, the love web becomes more and more tangled as the attraction between Jae Hee and Bong Sun grows stronger. More, please.
