Lee Jia is married to (and divorcing)… Seo Taiji

What in the WHAT?

This is the big story breaking right now, with all the headlines blaring the words “SHOCKER!” Because, well, it is: Actress Lee Jia, who just a month ago confirmed a romance with A-list movie star and Athena co-star Jung Woo-sung, is married. To groundbreaking rocker Seo Taiji, who practically reinvented the landscape of K-pop back in the ’90s. And now they’re divorcing.

Currently both stars are unreachable by their agencies, who have been trying to contact their cell phones without success; no doubt they’re lying low till this media maelstrom quiets. Given the nature (and secrecy!) of the news, and the star statuses of the two, it’s unlikely to calm down for a while. Even Yang Hyun-seok, head of YG Entertainment and Seo Taiji’s former bandmate (when they were Seo Taiji & the Boys) said upon hearing the news, “It can’t be true. It’s really a shock.”

The news has just leaked that the two were married, legally and in secret, and are currently in the process of suing for divorce. A second hearing was held on April 18 at the Seoul Family Court (a previous hearing took place in March), wherein Lee made various requests for alimony and separation of assets. Very few other details have come out yet.

Well, I can say that this finally clears up a few questions — like how in the world an unknown shot to stardom so instantly, landing a huge leading role in a high-budget blockbuster for her acting debut (2007′s Legend, with Bae Yong-joon), seemingly without connections. I’d always wondered who she knew; I suppose when you’re married to one of the most famous rock stars around, it gives you a leg up.

Lee was seen just this week, on April 21, in a noodle restaurant in Kangnam on a date with new boyfriend Jung Woo-sung.

Seo Taiji gives “Juliet” a White Day launch

Seo Taiji‘s back!

The k-rock icon released the first part of his 8th “Atomos” album last year (“Part Moai”), and now he’s released the second (“Part Secret”), which went on sale this week. And to kick off the round of promo work for this disc, he’s holding a White Day concert — two, actually, on the 14th and 15th at Seoul’s Olympic Garden.

Speaking of which, Happy (early) White Day! As you may know, White Day falls on March 14, a month after Valentine’s Day — while girls give chocolate on Valentine’s, White Day is the guys’ turn to reciprocate. But don’t worry, if you’ve got no cause to celebrate either day, you can always wait another month for April 14′s Black Day, when singles gorge on jajangmyun (black bean sauce noodles). Unless you take the anti-consumerist approach and eschew fake holidays altogether. (Psst, I say let’s choose that last one.)

Anyway. Seo Taiji’s March 14 concert bears the rather unwieldy title “2009 Seo Taiji Single 2 Release Celebration Concert Wormhole.” (Yeah, wormhole. There’s a really easy black-hole-suckage joke in there, but this is Seo Taiji so it doesn’t really apply.)

It will also be his first performance of the album’s single, “Juliet,” for which a music video teaser will be released on the 16th.

Seo Taiji‘s back in the news, and as far as Korean pop music is concerned, it’s a pretty big fucking deal. If you aren’t familiar with Seo Taiji, you might not get why he’s considered important, but the guy’s practically a legend. He had a strong, lasting effect on Korean pop music; he wasn’t just popular, he was influential.

And now he’s back. This time it’s something of an event, with an album to commemorate the 15th year since his debut. The album has already sold out in preorders, within four days of the November 2 announcement of its sale, and will need to go into additional pressings.

The frenzy of preordering was set off by the announcement that the album would be a limited edition — a monster 7-disc CD set with an additional two DVDs containing every song from his seven-album discography, all his music videos, unreleased footage, live clips, etc. Demand continues unabated even in the face of the rather high price, which is a bit over $100 (close to 100,000 won). The production company had wanted to only print 15,000 copies (15 being a special number as it’s the 15th anniversary), although a representative from Yedang Entertainment admits that it might prove difficult.

What I find cool about these copies is the care being taken to make it a special item — each copy from 1 to 15,000 will come with its own number, and the first 15 have been reserved for people at Seo Taiji’s company. The copies for sale will begin with #16, and — get this — even some of the other numbers are considered extra-special, i.e. 221 because February 21 is Seo Taiji’s birthday.
