Another Unstoppable High Kick alum is making a reappearance on its spinoff sitcom, High Kick Through the Roof. In the original series, Koyote singer Shinji was one of the adults in the middle generation who played an aspiring singer and ex-wife to Choi Min-yong; she will appear on High Kick Through the Roof alongside Danny Ahn in its 81st episode.

Shinji and Danny Ahn will act together as a couple; he plays a doctor and friend to Ji-hoon (Daniel Choi), while she is a university sunbae of (Hwang) Jung-eum, who has returned from studying abroad in Russia. It’s particularly interesting that her role is actually a crossover with her Unstoppable High Kick character, who was also named Shinji. In contrast, in the other cameos with Unstoppable stars (with Kim Hye-sung, Jung Il-woo, and Kim Bum), the returning actors played new roles.

In the episode, Shinji and Danny Ahn are featured in a talent show scene where they dance to a Koyote song (“Nonsense”). A source with production company Chorokbaem Media explained that although the two were not particularly close during their days as pop stars, having that shared background helped them bond and film comfortably.

High Kick Through the Roof continues to perform strongly with ratings in the 20%-25% range.

Shinji (Unstoppable High Kick) had been hospitalized on November 3 for kidney inflammation and infection, but was released today — not because she’s fully recovered, but to make it to a recording of SBS’s variety program TV Animal Farm.

Her management (Trifecta Entertainment) conceded that “because she is not yet fully recovered, the hospital staff had wanted to prevent her from being discharged. They were strongly in favor of talking to the broadcast station themselves. We will be monitoring her to see whether she will need to be readmitted to the hospital.”

After her initial hospitalization on the 3rd, Shinji was released on the 7th, but following a relapse she was readmitted on the 14th, where she has been until this re-release on the 17th.

While fellow Koyote member Kim Jong-min serves out his army duty, Koyote has been taking a temporary hiatus, with Shinji working on her solo album.

I’m tempted to go into a whole long diatribe about this (I mean, who wants to see a repeat of this?), but I have a feeling you guys will fill in the blanks just nicely.

Rain‘s little sister is getting married! It’ll happen sometime next year and Rain is feeling both brotherly and fatherly: “You know how they say fathers feel odd when their daughters get married? That’s how I feel, because she’ll become part of someone else’s family.” [Asia Economy]

Things look to be getting uglier in the custody battle for Choi Jin-shil‘s kids. Following Choi’s suicide last month, her brother Choi Jin-young (also an actor, of Okay to Love) has taken care of her two children, but her ex-husband Jo Sung-min, who’s been a deadbeat dad for the past four years and has been known to previously have beaten his wife, has suddenly decided he wants to raise his kids, and Choi’s brother and mother are not having it. Mom says, “He left his wife and kids because he didn’t want them and thinks he has a claim to them — how does that make sense? He’s done nothing as a father. I cannot recognize his parental right.” Jo counters, “It isn’t that I gave up my rights, but that I relinquished them to Choi Jin-shil. I’m the only parent they have now, so the rights automatically come to me.” Yeah, automatic parenting! One step up from deadbeat parenting! [Segye, Sports Seoul]

Note: What they’re talking about in this article is a step up from the ubiquitous “sel-ca” photos, or “self-taken” photographs, that we see online everywhere. A lot of the photos in question do feature the celebs themselves, but this is referring more to the trend of stars becoming amateur photographers, publishing books and putting their work out for display.

“What’s the reason for the celebrity photographer trend?”

Actors aren’t merely models who always stand in front of the camera. Sometimes they stand behind the camera and see the world through the eyes of photographers. Some publish photo collections like Park Ji-yoon (Secret Garden), Bae Doo-na (Doo-na’s Tokyo Fun), Lee Byung-jin. Others operate photo studios themselves, like Jo Min-ki (Seoul Cheongdamdong St. Zio) and Bbaek Ga (Seoul Shinsadong BY100).

A number of others are photography fans boasting a bit of skill, such as Bae Yong-joon, Boa, So Ji-sub, Song Il-kook, Uhm Tae-woong, and Jung Jong-chul. Let’s take a look at the reason for the trend of celebrities getting behind the camera lens.

On a recent episode of talk show Sang Sang Plus, actor (she was in the family sitcom Unstoppable High Kick) and singer of pop group Koyote Shinji admitted that she’d been hurt by the work of anti-fans, that dreaded and inexplicably influential subgroup of Korean society whose purpose in life I cannot even comprehend. (Really? You’re going to go OUT OF YOUR WAY to purposely tear someone down, for absolutely no personal gain whether financial or otherwise, purely for the pleasure of ripping someone apart? DOES NOT COMPUTE.)

This time, malicious rumors that reduced Shinji to tears said that she’d been behaving unprofessionally in missing scheduled appointments because of a bad drinking habit. Recently, she’d gone away to Dokdo as a replacement (“black rose”?) for her Koyote buddy (and regular variety-show participant with the hilariously goofy sense of humor) Kim Jong Min for a Happy Sunday segment. The info was distorted, and when she came back there were reports that she’d been drunk and couldn’t even make the first shoot.

I’m bored. Bored, bored, bored.

Not only bored, but restless. The only drama that holds my interest these days is Legend, and that’s just barely. It’s not hard to tell that my taste veers to trendy dramas — the fluffier, the better — and I feel the current lack keenly. As I was saying to a friend recently, I can find meaning in the most superficial of trendy dramas — just give me the sugariest cotton-candy drama and I’ll mine the hell out of it looking for depth and thematic resonance. Of course, I do have some standards — I won’t watch just any trendy drama, if it’s just a boring rehash of familiar stuff. But let’s say that if trendy dramas are the television equivalent of chick lit, I’m looking for Bridget Jones, not Shopaholic or Lipstick Jungle or whatever else comes with cheesy pink covers and pictures of high heels and handbags and jewelry. (I am not my accessories closet! … and if only I actually had an accessories closet!)

What does that have to do with The Unstoppable High Kick? Nothing really, except explain just how bored I am and in need of something light and fun, even if it doesn’t aspire to be meaningful. I missed the boat on High Kick when it first aired — daily sitcoms usually air over a hundred episodes, and that’s just too much of a commitment. It finished its run earlier this summer, but AZN has been showing it (unsubtitled), and I’ve let the episodes accumulate on my Tivo, watching them whenever I remember to. I’m somewhere up in the nineties now (there are 167 episodes), although I skipped a bunch in the beginning.
