Kang-ahhhhh, singing for me? *Swoon*

Actor Jo Hyun-jae is contributing a track to the soundtrack for his current drama, 49 Days, following fellow castmate Jung Il-woo, aka our sassy Scheduler, who previously recorded a track. Jo’s contribution is titled “Even If I Live Just One Day,” and was released just today.

As you might guess, given the recent turn of events in the drama, it’s something of a confession piece as Kang starts expressing more of his love for Ji-hyun, which has hitherto been massively repressed by his extreme awkwardness displaying any emotion at all. He’s workin’ on it.

It’s no surprise that Jang Geun-seok will be contributing to the OST of his new drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, since he’s sung for multiple roles in the past. Most notably, he sung several tracks for You’re Beautiful as the leader of its pop-idol band A.N.Jell.

What IS a surprise is the perplexing title of his first song, which was just released today (listen below): “‘부탁해, My Bus!” which translates roughly to… “Please, My Bus” or “I Leave My Bus In Your Care.”

The question then becomes: In what the hell kinda context does that make sense anyway?

One of the reasons girlfriday and I wanted to open up the blog to this Pop Culture series is because we’d sometimes like to depart from the norm and muse about stuff. It allows us to take something from pop culture or society at large and run with it. Girlfriday took on the piggyback ride in her first entry, and I thought this would be the perfect occasion to bring up something that’s always struck me as odd and fascinating and disturbing: a particular fairy tale.

The catalyst for this post was a song by FT Island called “The Angel and the Woodcutter.” I had been listening to a lot of FT Island last year (blame You’re Beautiful) and one of their songs caught my attention because it was catchy and fun. But then I checked the title, and all of a sudden I felt conflicted.

You see, The Fairy and the Woodcutter is an old Korean fairy tale that many/most Korean kids grow up hearing, and even back as a child it had bothered me. I didn’t realize back then why, I only knew that it seemed really… wrong. But listening to FT Island’s song brought back all those early memories, and when I played the song back and listened to the lyrics closely, I remembered all those reasons I’d been so unsettled by the original fairy tale.

I posted up a song, “Les Miserables,” from Lucid Fall‘s new album this week for the Episode 7 Will It Snow For Christmas recap, which got me once again marveling at how wonderfully composed his songs are. The track has a Part 2 sung by a woman, and the two fit together as two halves of the same story. They’re not simply lovely songs, but also lyrically as touching as they are musically; the verses have a poem-like quality.

“Les Miserables” Parts 1 and 2 share the same name with Lucid Fall’s fourth album, which was released only two weeks ago and is already topping the pop and indie music charts. I’ve been a fan of Lucid Fall for a few years, but I think this fourth album really takes the cake. His songs sometimes sound simple and placid at first listen, but there’s often something going on under the surface. Take a listen.

Wow.

Um, wow.

The more I think about the ending of Hong Gil Dong, the more I like it. I’ve mentioned that the series was starting to feel repetitive in recent episodes, and I’d wondered how this episode would wrap everything up to satisfaction.

Some people aren’t going to be happy, and I admit my initial impression was mixed. Though it’s not sad or tragic, it’s bittersweet, but mixed with an open-endedness and, dare I say, even hopefulness.

I didn’t expect the writers to pull out this kind of finale, but the more I consider it and the knee-jerk reaction fades, I think it achieves a kind of poignancy I didn’t think it would, or could. In fact, the finale actually brings the series up to scratch and vindicates some of the meandering plotlines for me. I like the series better for its ending, when I was actually prepared to go out on anticlimax. Although that may put me in the minority (sigh, once again).

Okay, this post has nothing to do with kdramas, but I occasionally post song lyrics and Tablo sometimes acts, so I’m covered. Not that it matters. Just saying.

Rapper and songwriter (and yes, sometimes actor) Tablo has revealed a short story he wrote in English on the variety show Sunday, Sunday Night. Tablo’s quite famous for his intellect as well as his popularity as Epik High rapper and songwriter, having graduated from Stanford University with a degree in English literature. (It’s earned him the nickname “Ta Bak-sa,” meaning “Dr. Ta.”) Apparently the author Tobias Wolff has praised the story, although it’s not clear who made the claim or whether it was corroborated.

The articles make mention of the short story and Tablo’s educational background, then go on to talk about some Michael Jordan sneakers that (other Epik High rapper) Mithra has from the Olympics blah blah blah… but I wanna know: What about the story?!?! You get Tobias effing Wolff (yes, that IS his full name) to read it — who cares if he liked it, just the fact that he supposedly READ it is news enough (I believe Tobias Wolff also teaches at Stanford, so perhaps it was in a classroom context) — and you don’t bother to comment on the material itself?

Come ON, Korean press!
