Blue Dragon Awards 2008

Kim Haneul and Kang Ji-hwan

Did the Blue Dragon Awards sneak up on us this year or what?

As one of the largest year-end awards shows, the Blue Dragon always tends to draw out a good number of A-listers, and we saw plenty of them out on the red carpet on November 20 and posing pretty for photos.

One big winner of the night was the “kimchi Western” The Good, The Bad, The Weird, as was the thriller The Chaser and even the sports movie Forever the Moment, from way back in January.

But, as with any awards show, sometimes the fun is less about the actual awards and more about parsing all the red carpet looks.

Su Ae becomes a cop for Miracle

After earning lots of accolades for her last movie, the Vietnam War film You’re Far Away [님은 먼 곳에], 28-year-old Su Ae is taking on a cop role for her next project.

The movie is The Miracle [기적] and will be directed by Han Hyun-seok (his previous work includes short film The Law of Reaction), and while Su Ae is cast in the lead role, the film is taking an omnibus format.

Su Ae’s character becomes a police officer because of her mother, who has searched all her life for her twin sister who was lost at a long age. Because of her sister’s loss, Su Ae has never been able to receive the full love of her mother, who hasn’t given up hope of finding the missing girl. The story intertwines with a fearless gangster who discovers he has cancer and suddenly wonders at the meaning of life, and a doctor who works tirelessly to revive his wife out of her vegetative state but neglects his daughter.

The omnibus film has become rather commonplace, but I think it’s an interesting format if done well (Amores Perros, anyone?) rather than merely slapped together to maximize star potential (as much as I enjoyed it, I found Love Actually somewhat pointless for this reason). Hopefully Su Ae will be able to keep up her upward trajectory and build from the critical success of her last film.
