Rumors have been circling, but mouths kept hushed about whether some members of hit variety show 1 Night 2 Days would stay for the upcoming second season, scheduled to start filming in two weeks. But Friday marked the current cast’s final trip, where the announcement was made official: longtime members Lee Su-geun and Kim Jong-min, along with last year’s addition Uhm Tae-woong, will remain on the show’s second season.

So there’s been a whole lot of speculation about the future of Korea’s most beloved variety show, 1 Night 2 Days, since it announced it would be ending with its current cast by the end of February. There was a time KBS considered going in a whole new direction altogether for the timeslot, but did as expected and went with the safe route, and began planning for a Season 2. I actually consider that choice more daunting, since second seasons with new casts rarely do well, and usually spin their wheels being compared to the first season and eventually die out. I’d almost rather have a clean break and give a new show a chance. But then again, my job isn’t dependent on ratings. And since Season 2 cast contender Kim Seung-woo finally opened his mouth about the possibility of joining the show, I figured it was time to weigh in on all the speculation.

EPISODE 353. Broadcast on September 25, 2011.

girlfriday: Last stop on the Viewers’ Tour! Ji-young performs and so does Ji-won (Am I the only one who misses his idol days? I wanna see him dance to happy music!) and Byung-man and Su-geun do a gag routine.

javabeans: The gag is basically Su-geun stealing Byung-man’s spotlight at every turn, which amuses me because isn’t that his basic function on 1N2D? But then Byung-man gets to the real meat of his routine, which is his jump-roping skills…which I suppose doesn’t sound that impressive, until you SEE him doing all his variations. Like shortening the rope to about a foot long and managing to get his entire body through it.

girlfriday: Wow this viewer’s tour is lasting forever. Not that I’m complaining, because it’s adorable. But the boys are on their best behavior because of all the elders, so there’s less misbehavin’ afoot.

javabeans: I think I read that they decided to add the fourth ep when all that Kang Ho-dong stuff went down. Not that they had to scramble for material, I’m sure, since there’s just so many people.

The Viewer Tour special continues (but does not yet conclude)! In this segment, we’re shown that even simple things like feeding and transportation can be a laborious effort, although surely it doesn’t help when there’s a nefarious PD at the helm, bokbulbok-ing his way through everything.

The massive ensemble makes its way from Yeoeuido to the airport in Incheon, to their final destination of Busan. Along the way, the special guests bond, some with each other and some with the cast members in charge of their journeys. It’s an hour of Awwws.

girlfriday: It’s time to spin the money wheel, so each captain can score some lunch money — 10,000 or 100,000 won (roughly 10 and 100 dollars) — which means some teams have to eat for less than a dollar a person. Prince or pauper, for sure. They spin, and Ji-young (teens), Ho-dong (20s) and Ji-won (70s) all get 10,000 won. Su-geun (60s) manages to land on the one tiny sliver for 200,000 won, and Na PD’s face falls. Everyone else gets 100,000 won.

Who knew it could be so entertaining watching a show introduce 101 people, literally one after another? And yet, it’s funny and heart-warming and compelling. Also the magic of this show.

girlfriday: Oh man, just the intro of what’s to come in the Viewers’ Tour is getting me teary-eyed. The first two were great, but I have a feeling the third time’s the charm.

javabeans: It’s only my first time watching one, but I can already tell the production has pulled out all the stops. It’s like everything was selected just so, from each viewer participant down to each set piece. At least they got the oldest possible kid for Hyun-moo’s 0-9 age range, with the infant born on January 1.

It’s the viewer tour special, part 2! I don’t know how many episodes this is going to span, but I suspect the official number will be: a crap-ton. Not that I mind, though, with these engaging guests and the inherent craziness of herding 100 die-hard fans on a single trip alongside some of variety’s favorite faces.

javabeans: Surprisingly, and happily for the team, nobody recognizes Grandpa Ji-won. He lasts a whole minute, then two… and even though some people turn back in his direction, they all end up walking away.

girlfriday: He’s doing a good job of appearing like a nondescript grandpa, all hunched over and frowning. But the members panic at every little gesture, thinking he’s overdoing it.

EPISODE 348. Broadcast on August 21, 2011.

javabeans: Based on last episode’s radio-station win, Seung-gi and Su-geun now take their trip abroad, which of course turns into a working vacation for them as they head to Japan. At the airport, they do their “We have arrived!” intro, and it always feels weird and awkward without Ho-dong around to lead the cry. With him it feels oddly natural, and without him it’s like boys are playing Dad in his absence.

girlfriday: I know, right? Why is that? It’s like the most literal example of not being able to fill daddy’s shoes. It’s always cute though.

javabeans: Su-geun busts out his brand-new passport, clean of visa stamps, and tells it, “How frustrated you must’ve been!” Then later at the airport, he asks the handler, “Please be gentle with it. It just came out today.”

girlfriday: I love Seung-gi and Su-geun’s odd-couple friendship. The differences are even more pronounced when it’s just the two of them.

Once actors go off to fulfill their two years of military service, it’s not often that we get to see them in the public eye until their discharge. So it’s nice to see a few of the currently enlisted entertainers together onstage for the 2009 Army Concert, which took place in Seoul on the evening of October 31.

Some of the celebrities who participated were actors Jae Hee (Three Dads One Mom), Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower), Lee Dong-wook (Partner), Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini), and Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police). On the kpop side, there were singer-actors Yang Dong-geun (I Am Sam), Lee Jung (Hometown of Legends), and Kim Jung-hoon (Goong), as well as singers Sung Shi-kyung, Tony An.
