Kang-chi finally gets ready to go on his quest to become a real boy, and Yeo-wool prepares to say goodbye, not realizing that he’s doing the same. It’s an episode of fallouts and setups, so there is a bit of an epilogue feel to some of the proceedings as we close a few chapters and head into finale week. Thankfully there’s a lot of cute to counter the angst to come.

This hour is the bookend to Episodes 1 and 2, and even though it’s been a while since Wol-ryung and Seo-hwa have been at the center of this story, it turns out they can still wring our hearts, just like they did the first time. I’m not crying, I swear. I just have something in my eye.

Wol-ryung and Seo-hwa finally meet for the first time in twenty years. Seo-hwa’s voice shakes as she calls his name, and this time we hear Wol-ryung’s thoughts as he looks back at her curiously: “Who is she, that woman? How does it hurt just to look at her?”

Okay, I’m happier with this episode. There’s a nice balance of character development, epic face-offs, cute couple moments, and emotional payoffs for conflicts that we’ve been circling for a while. And no, I’m not just happier because there are nekkid hijinks. At least… not entirely.

 
EPISODE 20 RECAP

As per her arrangement with Tae-seo, Seo-hwa sends her assassin to kill Jo Gwan-woong that night. The killer gets the jump on him, and he’s sooo close to getting a sword through his skull… when someone else shows up and kills the killer before he can kill. Dammit.

It’s an episode all about Kang-chi’s family—the people who took him in and raised him, the people who abandoned him, and the people who accepted him for who (or what) he is. There’s heartbreak and angst in that tale, but also a lot to be gained, because this story has never been about the family you come from, but the family you make for yourself.

The beans are a-spillin’. It’s an episode full of reveals, as each character learns a monumental secret, from the source of family tragedies, to long-lost gumiho babies, to first love obsessions that literally will not die. They say your past always catches up to you, but damn, can’t we get an handle on that mess before it infects a whole new generation?

The romance takes a big swing upward, because there’s nothing like a brush with death and mayhem to make you cut through the crap and tell a girl how you feel. Kang-chi’s family drama gets more complicated—and more interesting—when Wol-ryung starts to show signs of vulnerability, in more ways than one.

Tuesday’s episodes tend to have the goods—plot movement, life lessons learned, stakes raised. This time we get a dash of humor and a little romance too, but more importantly, our new Big Bad reveals a little motivation, and it does wonders for the conflict ahead.

Time to check back in with ratings now that there’s a new show in the picture. Gu Family Book is still on the rise with a new high of 18.2% today, and in the absence of God of Workplace, Jang Ok-jung scored double digits this week with 10.5%, and KBS’s new show Shark brought in the rear with 6.7%.

Cute cute cute. As expected, Dad gets crazy with the new rules, which only drives the kiddos right into each other’s arms. Nothing like a forbidden romance to light a fire under your ass. Things get a little more complicated when Yeo-wool learns some harsh truths about her father, while Kang-chi discovers another power and gets put to the test at school.
