Rumors have been circling, but mouths kept hushed about whether some members of hit variety show 1 Night 2 Days would stay for the upcoming second season, scheduled to start filming in two weeks. But Friday marked the current cast’s final trip, where the announcement was made official: longtime members Lee Su-geun and Kim Jong-min, along with last year’s addition Uhm Tae-woong, will remain on the show’s second season.

girlfriday: The boys gather for the opening and chitchat a little, and note that Seung-gi’s lost some weight. He says it’s for his new drama. He says he’s going to be a king, and Ji-won asks if it’s a sageuk, while Jong-min gets all wrapped up in the story description. Guess at least one of his hyungs will be watching.

javabeans: Na PD introduces today’s trip by referring back to a viewer favorite, for which today will be a second part. Tae-woong immediately blurts, “Actress special!” Too bad for him that’s not it, and Ji-won asks to clarify, “Did WE enjoy it?” Ha. I like how he immediately knows that viewer enjoyment does not necessarily equal member enjoyment.

This is a man who knows the meaning of striking when the iron is hot: Uhm Tae-woong has just been secured as the lead in Equator Man, continuing his very busy streak with a drama this time, after completing a string of movies. More Uhm Tae-woong? Love. In a straight-up conventional melodrama? Um…

Uhm has basically been working nonstop for the past year and a half, ever since taking on 2010′s romantic comedy film Cyrano Dating Agency, then the 2010 sports-medicine drama Dr. Champ. In the past year alone he’s filmed or released three movies: dark rom-com Neverending Story, Crime Squad, and Introduction to Architecture. Plus, there’s the whole ongoing 1 Night 2 Days gig he’s been doing.

javabeans: Plus, there’s the fact that his ajumma cooked everything in 2 minutes and barely spoke.

girlfriday: He repeats his earlier fear that it only means there’s something massively bad around the corner.

Here’s a look at the quirky new gallows-humor romantic comedy Neverending Story, starring Uhm Tae-woong and Jung Ryeo-won as two people who meet on the day they each get diagnosed with a terminal illness. How’s that for a meet-cute? With six months left to live, they decide, eh why not, and start to date… as they prepare to die. Their dates consist of shopping for coffins and burial clothes, and other hilariously dark non-datey activities, but their romance is every bit the traditional bickering cuteness.

Uhm Tae-woong plays a happy-go-lucky unemployed loser who can’t live without the lotto, and Jung Ryeo-won an uptight, exacting bank employee who can’t live without her diary. What cracks me up is that in the trailer, Uhm Tae-woong seems the closest to his real persona that I’ve ever seen (not counting 1 Night 2 Days, of course). And in fact, it seems so out of his normal wheelhouse that it seems like a part borne out of his 1N2D persona. His character is kind of a doofus, and really inexperienced at love, to the point that Jung Ryeo-won has to coach him on how to seduce her. Him: “Do you… not have to go h-home?” Her: “You have to MAKE me not want to go home! Cry and beg, or jump into the ocean or something!” Ha.

EPISODE 368. Broadcast on January 8, 2012.

javabeans: The Friend Special continues! So Team Seung-gi / Su-geun get to the beach first and the flag is in sight, but the last twist is that they have to pick up their ditched teammate — Seon-kyun — and pull the flag together. And since Seon-kyun’s beppu Tae-woong is on the other team, nobody here has his phone number, or even knows what kind of car to look for. Seung-gi starts to call Tae-woong, but they decide that asking would give the rival team a hint.

girlfriday: That’s just mean. The other team has the total advantage there.

javabeans: Trying to get the number a different way, they suggest that Seo-jin start calling around to his other actor friends, literally playing telephone in the hopes that somebody will have Seon-kyun’s number. Ooh, will we get to see how Six Degrees of Lee Seon-kyun plays out?

What is it with medical dramas and their behind-the-scenes drama? There’s an upcoming medical series by Taewon Entertainment (the people behind the IRIS franchise), that was originally set to air on SBS in March and star Cha Seung-won as the lead: the once-generically named Third Ward. Cha eventually never sealed the deal and so the drama managed to sign another leading man — Uhm Tae-woong — and changed its title to the equally-vague Tower (not to be confused with the reigning popular medical drama of yore, White Tower).

And now, Tower‘s been dropped by its broadcaster two months before the premiere. So in the span of a week, it’s gone from having a broadcaster and no leading man, to having a leading man and no broadcaster. Apparently you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
