Try out for MBC Star Audition in Los Angeles

MBC Star Audition is a reality singing-competition show, and it’s holding open auditions for its second season in Los Angeles, on Saturday, July 16, 2011. They’ll be held at the Sheraton Los Angeles Downtown Hotel (711 South Hope Street, Los Angeles, CA 90017).

That means you’ve got two weeks to apply if you want to take your shot, which you can do:

If you can sing at least 1 song in Korean (no restrictions on age, gender, ethnicity);
are not a professional singer or have a recording contract;
through July 15, 2011;
in time for the auditions on July 16 at the above address.

Wang Bit-na’s Date Shopper

Wang Bit-na had one of the smaller supporting roles in the recent The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry but quite possibly the most kickass character (empowered, confident, and always, always right!). (Also: best nickname, Boogie-Woogie.) Now the actress will follow that role by hosting a new dating variety show, Date Shopper.

The show will air once a week on cable channel On Style, and each episode will center around a single woman who picks a date from three candidates. Hardly a new concept, so I suppose its appeal will depend on how they execute the idea.

Wang Bit-na, who married in 2007, plays the role of dating counselor. She said, “This is my first time being a host, so I’m excited and nervous. I’ll do my best to live up to the role of middleman in helping single men and women make connections.” The first episode airs on April 25.

Moon Geun-young performs on Chocolate

On January 30, Moon Geun-young filmed an appearance on the music/talk show Kim Jung-eun’s Chocolate, where she got onstage at Kim’s request and performed a “sexy dance.” She also sang the song she’d recorded for her management company’s “Love Story Project,” titled “That Sound of the Wind.”

For years, Moon has been one of Korea’s most beloved child-stars-turned-adult-actors, and has borne the affectionate nickname “Korea’s Little Sister.” Moon said, however, “I’m getting too old to be called little sister. Now, on set there are people who are younger sisters to me.” (She is 22.)

Lee Seung-gi cancels concert due to swine flu

Wow, yet another celebrity comes down with swine flu. The latest is singer-actor Lee Seung-gi (Brilliant Legacy), who has canceled his activities for the immediate future as a result of his diagnosis.

According to a broadcast station source on November 11, Lee Seung-gi completed filming for variety show 1 Night 2 Days on November 7, after which he came down with a high fever, headache, and coughing. He was taken to the emergency room of a Seoul hospital where he tested positive for swine flu on the 10th.

Producers have been notified on the programs on which he is a current participant. A rep from the 1 Night 2 Days production team explained that filming occurs once every two weeks for their program, so they are not sure if he will be able to make the next shoot, but they have plenty of footage to be fine for the moment. Lee is also currently co-hosting the SBS variety program Strong Heart with Kang Ho-dong; PD Park Sang-hyuk explained that there is no shooting this week, and they don’t expect too much of a problem for the present.

However, Lee Seung-gi has had to cancel an upcoming concert in LA; he was scheduled to perform at the Hollywood Bowl on November 14 with Sohn Dam-bi and was planning to fly to the States on the 12th. However, his management feels it is prudent to keep him away from conditions where he’d be working with a lot of staff in a public place, and therefore will not be making the trip.

Lee Chun-hee regrets quitting Family Outing

Actor Lee Chun-hee (aka “Chunderella”) was a fan favorite on the SBS sitcom program Family Outing, and it was to much disappointment that he chose to leave the show in June against the producers’ requests. Now he has come out and admitted, “I regret leaving.”

Lee Chun-hee candidly expressed his regrets on the September 21st broadcast of talk show Ya Shim Man Man 2 when asked about his departure. He explained that he’d watched the show recently: “Seeing everyone get along so well with the new members without me bothered me.” He even disclosed that CF requests and his income had dropped since leaving the show, eliciting big laughs with his forthrightness.

Next up for Chunderella is the upcoming comic SBS drama series Smile, starring Lee Min-jung and Jung Kyung-ho; he plays the brother to Lee Min-jung and the immature son of a rich family who loses everything and moves in with their former chauffeur’s family.

Western actors becoming more visible on Korean TV

Here’s an article that takes a look at the growing trend of non-Korean actors being featured on television, which caught my eye because it talks about one of the leads in the new weekend comic drama Tamra the Island, which I’m enjoying.

“Foreigners on television are no longer unfamiliar”

On the 8th, viewers watching MBC’s new weekend drama Tamra the Island [탐나는도다] may have cocked their heads. That was because of the appearance of the lead French actor with the golden hair and blue eyes in the role of William. Hwang Chan-bin, birth name Pierre Deporte, is a Frenchman who attended high school in Korea. He couldn’t forget his home country and after graduating from university he returned to Korea and first met the public on the program Global Talk Show [aka Misuda, 미녀들의 수다], and now has even appeared in a television drama.

Han Ji-hye sings on Chocolate

Television actress Han Ji-hye‘s latest two projects are a digital single and shoe designing, both of which she demonstrated at the May 16 recording of talk show Kim Jung-eun’s Chocolate (which will broadcast on the 23rd).

On the program, Han drew some designs, showed off her shoes, and sang the peppy single “Luv Luv” (listen below), which is also being featured on her cable special Shoes! My Dream!

Personally, I think Han Ji-hye is a much better actress than she is a singer or designer. You be the judge.

The Blue reunite, reminisce on Sang Sang Plus

It’s nostalgia day!

Old ’90s vocal duo The Blue is back with comeback activities, which means its two actor-singer members (Kim Min-jong and Sohn Ji-chang) are back in action and promoting their reunion.

Thus the two old friends recently appeared on Sang Sang Plus 2 and shared old stories about their earlier days, namely the hit 1994 youth trendy drama Feelings [느낌], which I LOVED.

Kim and Sohn played twin brothers in the drama (Sohn was the “elder” of the two), which was also the launching pad for a then-unknown young actor who would become a top movie star, (my!) Lee Jung-jae (of Typhoon, Air City, and soon to be seen in Triple). But according to Sohn Ji-chang, Lee Jung-jae was only cast at the last minute through a fateful chance encounter.

Feelings OST – “너의뒤에서” (Behind You) by JYP. This was one of the main love themes of the series, sung by Park Jin-young — yes, that Park Jin-young — and featured on his first solo album.

Peppermint losing viewers

Lee Hana’s Peppermint, the music-themed program that replaced the popular Yoon Do Hyun’s Love Letter, has dropped in the ratings since its premiere. The last episode of Love Letter drew a 4.7% rating, while Peppermint‘s premiere dropped to 4.3%. The second outing recorded a further drop down to 3.6%.

Note: The numbers themselves aren’t the problem, considering that these programs air past midnight. (For a point of comparison, Kim Jung-eun’s Chocolate, another late-night music talk show — which airs on a different day — generally gets ratings in the 3% and 4% range.) However, the article points out, the downward trend is a cause of worry, particularly when the show is so new, and “a drop of 0.7% within its time slot is a grave matter and a severe blow to the program.” It has also been unable to retain the established viewership of the long-running Love Letter.

I wouldn’t worry about cancellation just yet, and it’s inevitable that Lee Hana, who may still be a bit awkward as an MC, needs some time to find her feet. Still, I do think expectations were high given her relative lack of experience.

First look at Peppermint

Following the end of Yoon Do-hyun’s Love Letter, KBS is all set to launch another music variety program, Lee Hana’s Peppermint, which shot its first episode on November 18.

Host Lee Hana took the opportunity to perform a few songs at the piano, including the Carpenters tune to be used as the program’s title song, “Close to You.”

A fan of Yoon Do-hyun’s program herself, Lee said, “I’m sure there are lots of people who are sad about Love Letter’s end, and I feel the same… I’d really like to have Yoon Do-hyun on this program, and I’ve already asked.”

Although her acting career has been on the upswing since her debut in 2006′s Alone In Love (followed by performances in When Spring Comes, Merry vs. Daegu Battle, and Women in the Sun), for now Lee plans to focus on her MC post.

Guests for the inaugural episode were guitarist Lee Byung-woo, veteran pop singer Lee Seung-hwan, and ballad singer Park Hyo-shin. The first episode will air November 21.
