First-date dramas

I was thinking how I’ve been watching lots of first episodes of dramas these days, but haven’t found anything to dive into since the end of Who Are You? It’s starting to feel like going on a string of disappointing first dates — measuring up expectations versus performance, anticipation versus letdown, etc.

You know, there’s that date you’re really looking forward to, so you get dressed up and put on your heels and makeup and count down the hours, and he turns out to be a total dud. Or the date you agreed to because it was easier to give the guy your number than to try to invent an excuse not to because those excuses always come out embarrassingly half-assed — like you say you don’t have a phone and then it rings, or something — but then you end up having a good time.

I didn’t exactly intend to go off on an extended metaphor, but when I thought about all the recent dramas I’ve caught, they all seemed to fit (more or less).

Who Are You: Episode 17 (Final)

Before I launch into my many-word description of the finale, I have a one-word description: catharsis.

There’s something really cathartic about the way this story resolves, and I’m so pleased to report that I found the finale to be all things a finale should be — and above all, satisfying.

Who Are You: Episode 16

Only one more episode left. Usually by the time a finale rolls around, even if I’ve enjoyed the drama, I’m good and ready for it to finish. But I’m really going to miss this drama’s mixture of warmth and humor — and Seung Hyo! — when Who Are You? ends tomorrow.

Today’s episode wasn’t the most plot-driven we’ve had, but that’s okay with me. It was full of touching moments and bonding scenes, which is what the series has really done best, and the other stuff (the mystery, the paintings, the art gallery plot) was always secondary anyway.

Who Are You: Episode 15

(I just love the look on Yoon Kye Sang’s face here.)

This episode was chock-full of moving moments as things start wrapping up (or readying for the final wrap-up). I’m a little nervous that the extension could mess with the pacing of the finale, but I think the producers must have had decent notice, so I hope it won’t pose a problem.

After a somewhat dramatic episode, the ending of this episode KILLED ME, it was so unexpectedly funny (you are forewarned, in case you want to keep the surprise intact for yourself).

Who Are You: Episode 14

As much as I like the romantic moments between Seung Hyo and Young In (and the gradual, measured way that’s progressed), my favorite moments are becoming more and more the scenes between Seung Hyo and Il Gun. It’s their give-and-take: Seung Hyo is slowly coming to enjoy life through Young In’s and Il Gun’s prodding, and Il Gun (aside from the weirdness of having actually inhabited the body of his prospective son-in-law) actually couldn’t have wished for a better outcome — a man who understands Il Gun’s fatherly love for his daughter, to whom he can safely entrust Young In after he leaves permanently.

There are also a lot of good conversations in this episode.
