Kim Yoon-hye (Woori) joins Flower Boy cast

When it rains, it pours: Another addition rounds out our Flower Boy Next Door cast, with Kim Yoon-hye jumping onboard. If that name is unfamiliar, it’s because the artist formerly known as Woori changed her stage name this year and is now acting under her real name.

In this drama, Kim Yoon-hye plays Yoon Shi-yoon’s first love and best friend. Her character is described as a free spirit, the kind of person who throws herself wholeheartedly after something she wants. Ha, well if the thing she wants is the hero, she’ll have to settle for disappointment since he’s set up to romance Park Shin-hye.

The two ladies have actually gone head-to-head before; Kim Yoon-hye played Park’s rival in last year’s You’ve Fallen For Me, where their characters were both up for the lead in the big anniversary musical production. Maybe one of these days Kim will manage to win the upper hand, but it’ll have to be in a different drama — maybe third time’ll be the charm?

Flower Boy Next Door premieres January 7 on tvN.

The ghostbusting cast of horror-comedy Fortune Tellers

I have been looking forward to the movie Fortune Tellers ever since it was announced, and here’s a closer look at the premise and the characters — and it looks like a hoot. An eerie and spine-tingly hoot, perhaps, but still: just as hilarious as it is jump-inducing.

The setup is simple: One remote seaside village crawling with supernatural energy, meet a team of assorted mediums brought in to root out the spirits. They’re skilled and possess supernatural powers, right? (Well, kinda.) So this should be a piece of cake, right? And yet, things never go as simply as they should.

Essentially we’re doing Ghostbusters in the sticks, but with a heavier horror component (although it looks like the comedy’s pretty front and center as well). So, the trailer:

Woori joins dark comedy Fortunetellers

Woori, who most recently played the haughty, bratty Hee-joo in You’ve Fallen For Me, has been cast in the movie Fortunetellers. It’s a horror-comedy (love that mix) that previously cast two hot up-and-comers in the movie biz, Kang Ye-won and Lee Je-hoon, and also features comedian Kim Su-ro (God of Study).

The setup sounds like potential loads of fun: The movie assembles a group of fortunetellers to a village hit by strange events, who pool their talents to get to the bottom of the mystery. Woori plays a woman with psychometry skills, enabling her to see the past by touching objects. She’s a quirky, 4-D character who also does tarot card readings and treats her pet turtle Esmerelda as her teacher. Ha! Sounds like a hoot. Woori was great at being a brat, but I think I’ll like her a lot more being an eccentric.

Fortunetellers comes from director Shin Jung-won, who directed the darkly funny killer-boar-on-the-loose horror movie Chaw, so I’m expecting this one to be fresh and funny as well. It begins filming this month.

What this drama lacks in slickness, it makes up for in sweetness. I’m sentimental about youth angst dramas, because they’re what I grew up on, but they also feel like a throwback because of that. They’re like drama comfort food, like Mom’s cooking. And while the tonal shifts in this one are still a bit wonky, the overall mood is like I’m back in high school, watching my first campus drama Feelings all over again. Sigh. Good ol’ days.

You’ve Fallen For Me: Episode 1

Another anticipated drama premiered today with MBC’s You’ve Fallen For Me, which I think got off to a rather uncertain start, tonally speaking, but found its feet by the hour’s end. The jury’s out on the romantic chemistry between the leads, but I find that there’s plenty of antagonistic chemistry. Sparks aplenty on that front, and that keeps me curious to see how they’ll transition from such strong opposing stances to romantic bliss.

The drama has been a buzz project for a couple of reasons: There’s the re-teaming of its You’re Beautiful stars, Park Shin-hye and Jung Yong-hwa, who had a loveline in that drama though they weren’t the ultimate pairing. She’s one of the more famous actresses of her age range, while Jung’s got a budding following of his own as part of idol band CN Blue, and together that practically ensures a rabid youthful fanbase.

But there’s also PD Pyo Min-soo at the helm, who’s done a number of dramas I respect, even if I haven’t been a fan of them all: Full House, Coffee House, and The World They Live In are a few highlights.

(Note: This drama has several names, originally going by Festival, then adopting the English title Heartstrings, which is the name you’ll want if watching at Dramafever. We’re using You’ve Fallen For Me since that’s what the Korean title means, and we’re purists like that.)

Woori takes on Park Shin-hye as a rival

MBC’s You’ve Fallen For Me (aka Festival, aka Choose Your Own Title) has finished its main casting with the addition of Woori (Crime Squad, Supermom), which means she’ll face off against heroine Park Shin-hye in claiming the affections of the hero (Jung Yong-hwa).

Woori’s character has been in love with Jung Yong-hwa since high school, while being in the receiving end of idol-actor Kang Min-hyuk’s (It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl) affections. Looks like she’s not the gracious kind of second lead; she’s described as the type to heap curses on our heroine’s head. I look forward to watching how she tries to thwart their twoo wuv, to no avail. (It’s a K-drama; that much is a given, no?)

I’ve been approaching this drama with wariness, because I just haven’t had a lot of faith in its cast, even with the inclusion of Song Chang-eui. I haven’t written them off, either, seeing as how Dream High was able to make the most of a green, idol-laden cast of acting newbies — but on the flipside, It’s Okay, Daddy’s Girl is an example of the pitfalls of that same scenario. But I’d also forgotten that this is the work of PD Pyo Min-soo, who has certainly proven he can put out popular product (Full House), as well as more introspective work (Insoon Is Pretty, The World They Live In). He also melded comedy with quirk in last year’s Coffee House.

PD Pyo expressed his confidence in Woori, saying, “She resembles [respected and now-retired actress] Shim Eun-ha” …which I might feel better about had Shim not sucked in her newbie days. (She’s one of Korea’s favorite leading actresses, even years after her retirement, and really came into her talent later on — but have you seen Last Match? 1.5? M? Green, green, green. Beautiful, but totally awkward. If you’d have said she’d grow into a top star lauded for her acting back then, I’d have said you were betting on the wrong horse.)

You’ve Fallen For Me is similar to Dream High and What’s Up in that it’s set against a performing arts school backdrop, featuring aspiring singers and performers. It premieres June 29.
