Enlisted celebrities participate in Army concert

Once actors go off to fulfill their two years of military service, it’s not often that we get to see them in the public eye until their discharge. So it’s nice to see a few of the currently enlisted entertainers together onstage for the 2009 Army Concert, which took place in Seoul on the evening of October 31.

Some of the celebrities who participated were actors Jae Hee (Three Dads One Mom), Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower), Lee Dong-wook (Partner), Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini), and Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police). On the kpop side, there were singer-actors Yang Dong-geun (I Am Sam), Lee Jung (Hometown of Legends), and Kim Jung-hoon (Goong), as well as singers Sung Shi-kyung, Tony An.

A quiet enlistment, for once

Actor and hip-hop artist Yang Dong Geun (29) has surprised many with the belated disclosure that he recently began his military service; he enlisted on May 6, but the information wasn’t released till just recently, along with a picture of him in training (to right).

A source explained that he’d wanted to begin his training quietly, and kept it a secret from even his friends; he was only sent off by his mother and manager.

Most recently, Yang Dong Geun starred in the drama series I Am Sam (he’s appeared in numerous films and dramas, such as Ruler of Your Own World and Dr. Kkang, as well as putting out four hip-hop albums). He’d planned for the film I-tal (Secession) to be his last project, but ended up canceling those plans and enlisting instead. He’d received his enrollment papers in January, but had put off service because he was in the midst of film talks. Apparently he’d finally decided enough was enough, and that he would rather get his service over quickly than postponing further to squeeze in more projects.

As Male Stars Enlist in Military Service En Masse in 2008… Will It Leave Behind Another Void?

A Korean man cannot avoid his military service, and stars at the busiest time in their careers are no exception. Male stars generally reveal their thoughts on military service upon reaching the appropriate age, and fans accept their absence as a disappointing but inevitable truth.

However, because most of these actors who must leave at the height of their careers are around the same age, they tend to enter their service at around the same time. Moreover, their mass exit from the film and television world leaves a gaping void behind them.

And now, trying something new…
