I know what you’re thinking: This kid is waaaay too young to be having a “last” anything. But read it and weep (perhaps even literally): Yoo Seung-ho, at the tender age of 19, is already being featured in his “last photo shoot before army duty” with March’s issue of Bazaar.

Of course, whether this actually IS his last photo shoot before army duty remains to be seen; remember Kim Nam-gil popping up with a last photo shoot before army duty at least a half-dozen times? So I’m half-expecting to see a few more for Yoo Seung-ho, which gets no complaints from me. We’ll need it to console ourselves while he goes off and gets his army abs, and then he’ll come back with his many “first photo shoot after army duty” dealios and we can laugh at how much of a little boy he once was.

girlfriday: So… get ready to cry. Yoo Seung-ho announced that he’s enlisting in the army early next year, right after his current show I Miss You is over. But! He’s so widdle!

javabeans: Although in the scheme of things this is really a more “normal” age for someone to go.

girlfriday: Yes, true. It’s actually when all his peers would go — other 19- or 20-year olds, either right out of high school or in the middle of college.

The search begins, as we face the fallout from yesterday’s tragedy, and it’s actually Detective Kim who takes center stage in this episode, as a much-needed (and let’s face it, only) father figure in these kids’ lives. Jung-woo grows up as well, and man, I know that growing up is hard to do, but today that just feels like the understatement of the century.

Wow. Um, you might want to steel yourselves before venturing into today’s episode, which takes the tremendous cuteness of the previous episode, gives it the big ol’ backhand, and locks it away. In a box of nails. With torture. The general plotline isn’t anything we weren’t expecting, since the whole premise is built on this huge trauma that rips apart the couple in their youths, but the dramatization of said trauma is a little, well, traumatic.

But if you’ve already gone and seen the episode, maybe what you really need is a big cathartic cry-vent-release session. That’s what comments are for? Have at it.

Oh whew, it’s much better today. Yay for some cuteness. I was scared off a little (okay, a lot) by the downer of a first episode, but thankfully we get some much-needed levity up in here, as young romance starts to bloom. Why the show didn’t choose to start here is beyond me.

I Miss You premiered today, and I was eager to check it out for a few reasons. First off, the childhood leads are amazing. I like the adult leads as well, Yoochun and Yoon Eun-hye, and think they’d rock the melodrama genre, in addition to basically loving Yoo Seung-ho in anything he does. Plus, the writer and PDs’ resumés (Smile You, Can You Hear My Heart, Can’t Lose, Thank You) had me hopeful for a heartfelt, warm type of melo, rather than the overly theatrical kind.

Except… this is not a heartwarming melo. It’s a hardcore tearjerker with tragedy up the wazoo. I am decidedly nonplussed about this. I was all set to embrace this show and dive into the emotional whirlpool, only now, I find myself hesitant. I Miss You is definitely beautiful to look at, well-shot and strongly acted with characters whose predicaments you can really sympathize with. It’s the overload of misery that gives me pause.

I’ll hold out hope that things take an upturn, because there’s something here that’s quite compelling. As with so many things, it’s a matter of balance, and if I Miss You can deliver enough emotional substance to counter the heavy dramatics, I’m much more optimistic about its future.

Well, it’s settled. I already have second lead syndrome, and I’m doomed to cry a river while watching Yoo Seung-ho not get the girl in I Miss You. On the upside, at least it’s a melodrama and EVERYONE will be crying? I know, it’s a very small upside. It’s a bit late to still be casting, isn’t it? Well, better not look a gift horse in the mouth; at least I Miss You, which premieres in one week, finally has a complete cast. I know.

Granted, this last addition is a secondary lead, and yes, the series does start out in childhood so there’s a little breathing room here. But the show was supposed to follow Arang and the Magistrate, and somehow instead of handing the baton directly to the new drama, MBC decided to scrounge up two weeks of filler material. (This week we’ve got a rebroadcast of a Tears of Antarctica special and the movie Wandeuki.) You can say the show isn’t running perilously behind schedule… in that you can say something and not necessarily make it be true. Let’s just say they’re cutting it close. (...)

Hot diggity. Yoo Seung-ho has just been added to I Miss You, and I am STOKED.

Funny that he should be going right from one Wednesday-Thursday drama (Arang and the Magistrate) into the show replacing it, but you will not hear me complaining about more Yoo Seung-ho. He has just confirmed that he’ll be playing the character of Kang Hyung-joon, aka the antagonist to hero Han Jung-woo (Yoochun), and his “mild-mannered smile hides the sharp blade of revenge.” The two men’s conflict dates back to their parents’ generation, and the role ought to give Yoo Seung-ho a change of pace as he displays an “icy charisma.”
