And now to conclude the Big 3 Broadcaster awards with SBS, featuring some of the most popular dramas of the year. Tree With Deep Roots was the big winner of the night, winning six trophies in total, including the Daesang for Han Seok-kyu, and the Top Excellence Award for Best Drama. There were no big upsets in any category, because they kind of have a category for everyone, but that’s the name of the game. I’m just happy for Han Seok-kyu’s big win, and the fact that he didn’t have to share the glory with any split-award hullabaloo.

Protect the Boss cleaned up as well, winning Best Couple and acting awards for the stars, as well as an additional netizen popularity award for Choi Kang-hee. As expected, Thousand Day Promise had a strong showing in the acting categories, as did fellow melodrama Scent of a Woman. It certainly was the year for tearjerkers. The winners…

The cable deluge is upon us! I’m glad to report that some of the brand-new selections look quite promising, as is the case with the adorable Color of Woman, which turns out to be a lot more feel-good than the descriptions made it seem. It’s a lot warmer and friendlier than “two careerwomen in a fierce rivalry,” because as it turns out, those rivals are also friends with a quirky relationship and enjoyable chemistry.

In fact, what this drama has going for it is fantastic chemistry all around — each main cast member has great rapport, and a different dynamic, with the other three.

New drama Color of Woman has just released two posters, which may not be terribly original, but it’s not a supremely high-concept show anyway. The posters convey the general tone and gist of the show, and are pretty cute despite being fairly standard, verging on plain.

The story’s about two rival careerwomen in a cosmetics company with opposing professional styles — one is chic and wily (Lee Soo-kyung), while the other is more ordinary with a strong work ethic (Yoon So-yi). The two love interests are played by Jae Hee (eeeee!) and Shim Ji-ho. (...)

But moving on to Lee Soo-kyung: IS SHE CRAZY??

Lee, you may recall, recently took a leading role in cable sitcom You’re Here, You’re Here, You’re Really Here — that show on the yet-to-premiere cable channel MBN that touts itself as the “Korean Friends.” That show has begun shooting and will air as a daily sitcom for 120 episodes, making its broadcast run about six months long. And yet, here comes the news that she as also taken on a leading role in another cable show, the Channel A drama Color of Woman.

The first official poster is out for upcoming fusion action sageuk Warrior Baek Dong-soo, a show about which I am being cautious, but optimistic. Because while some of its stills verge on looking cheesy, others are much more interesting, visually and thematically.

Plus! It stars two young rising stars, Ji Chang-wook as the good guy and dastardly assassin Yoo Seung-ho as his rival, with both of them being equally matched in their mastery of swordsmanship. They trained together in childhood, but somehow went their separate ways, with Dong-soo becoming one of the king’s guard and Yeo-woon turning to the dark side as a member of a shadowy organization plotting to kill the king. I just love this kind of conflict; let’s hope the drama can deliver on the tension built right in to the premise.

Here’s our first look at upcoming fusion sageuk Warrior Baek Dong-soo, the comic book adaptation which stars Ji Chang-wook as our righteous hero Baek Dong-soo and Yoo Seung-ho as the (seemingly Mi-shil-esque) villain/rival Yeo-woon.

To be honest, I can’t tell from these images whether the drama’s going to be awesomely action-and-thrills-packed fusion fare, or campy Peter Pan-y stuff. The plain photos make it look like the latter but I’m hoping for the former, since I’m always drawn to Robin Hood-like setups; they’re the ultimate underdog stories, aren’t they? Maybe all they need is a good Photoshop job.

Plus, I’m already looking forward to the good-versus-evil-hotness rivalry between our boys Dong-soo and Yeo-woon, which will undoubtedly be heightened by the fact that these two train together in secret practice sessions as children (as you can see in the stills below). Dong-soo becomes known as an expert swordsman, perhaps the best around — but you can bet your bottom dollar Yeo-woon’s a close second and will be challenging him in no time.

With Ji Chang-wook (Smile, Dong-hae) and Yoo Seung-ho (Flames of Desire) already in place as hero and villain for the fusion sageuk drama Warrior Baek Dong-soo, now we turn to the ladies, who have just been confirmed.

Yoon So-yi (above) is most recently from the MBC drama Hero (which performed dismally, despite an avid — but small — audience), though I still prefer to think of her in terms of Goodbye Solo, because that’s the strongest I’ve seen her. (Other roles: Try To Remember, City of Glass, Auction House.) Caveat: I see some reports calling her casting unconfirmed, but another one states that she has not only been cast but also attended the drama’s first script reading.

Fans of Coffee House’s endearingly awkward Dong-wook, played by Park Jae-jung, will be happy to know he’s starring in a movie — his big-screen debut — which opens this week. It’s a romance drama with Hero’s Yoon So-yi whose Korean title is literally Have We Met?, though its English-language title is officially Try To Remember.

The film is described as a “Joseon version of Ghost” and incorporates a famous true story known as the “Mother of Won-yi” incident; in 1998, an old letter was discovered at the construction site of a housing development in Andong.

In the trailer (watch below), Eun-kyo (Park), a famous photographer, travels to Andong upon hearing of an opening for a photography instructor. When he asks In-woo (Yoon) curiously, “Have we met before?” she looks at him blankly and says no, but he can’t shake the feeling of deja vu. Eun-kyo comes to recognize her as the woman he’s seen numerous times in his dreams — dreams and memories are big motifs here — and tries to understand how that can be.

The 8th Korea Film Awards was a big night for the folks affiliated with dark thriller Ajusshi (aka The Man From Nowhere) and the Cannes winner (for screenplay) Poetry, both of which took home multiple awards.

To wit: Ajusshi was nominated in 11 categories and won in seven, including acting awards for both its leads, Won Bin and Kim Sae-ron. Meanwhile, Poetry won three, two of which were the top honors of the night, Best Picture and Director.
