See ya Next Sunday

It feels like we’re constantly hearing of pop stars venturing forth into acting, and this time it’s rock-ish pop singer Younha who’ll give it a shot. She makes her acting debut in a Japanese film, titled Next Sunday, and explained that the director, Kenmochi Satoki, “saw me singing on a Japanese program, came upon an idea and had the script written. After hearing that, I couldn’t turn down this role.”

Younha has actually already appeared in a short film, 2005’s Day of Praise [천사가 내려온 날], but this project is considered her official acting debut. The movie is described as a “quietly drawn film” that follows a young Korean woman studying in Japan who falls in love with an older Japanese man.

She explained, “The crew is all Japanese, and so is the dialogue. Although it’s produced in Japan and is a ‘99% made in Japan’ film, since the movie deals with the lead girl’s development, there will be some Korean spoken too.”

About the movie: “I think of it as a movie that quietly shows the inner thoughts and feelings of a main character who realizes, through watching the hardships of a lowly cleaner, that everybody undergoes struggles.”

Seems like every pop star these days wants to become a movie star, doesn’t it? I bet if you canvassed the current players on the kpop scene, we’d find that most of them harbor acting aspirations and see their kpop work as more of a “starter” career. Still, enough pop stars have crossed over successfully that one can’t be dismissed for wanting to make the effort.

A new album, a new image

What I like about rock(ish) singer Younha is that she hasn’t really had to rely on “image,” at least not in the way that other pop artists have had to build up a publicity whirl around themselves to attract attention and try to distinguish themselves from people from whom they are not actually that distinguishable. It’s not that she doesn’t have an image — everyone’s got one — but Younha’s is based on something I can get behind: strong vocals, killer live performances, and the ability to play musical instruments (while singing, to boot!).

This time she changes up her look — from the slightly punky, youthful urban look of her first album — and goes for a dual “feminine and boyish” take for her upcoming second album. On the just-released images for her album art, she dons both a flowy print dress and a more masculine pantsuit look, both showing a sleeker side than we’ve previously seen from her. It’s different, but she looks great.

Her new album “Someday” is described as encompassing multiple genres: pop ballads, modern rock, prog rock, electronica, and jazz. In keeping with some of her high-profile collaborations (Epik High, Wheesung, Ajoo), she’s got some familiar names on this album, such as the producer of her hit song “Password 486,” Hwang Chan-hee, as well as rapper-songwriter Tablo. Also contributing are singer-songwriter Jo Kyu-chan and jazz pianist Song Young-joo.

The first single, “Telepathy,” gets its television debut on SBS’s Inki Gayo [Popular Music] program on August 31. The album goes on sale on August 28.

The future of kpop

The “Oricon Comet” Younha

The Korean pop music industry, like the recording industry worldwide, has been in a constant downward slide in recent years. The reasons for that are all the usual suspects: General sales slump for the CD market, rise of digital media, and, oh yeah, suckiness of the product.

Personally, I think kpop is both worse and better now than it’s been in years. It all depends on how you define “kpop,” I guess. What’s typically seen as kpop is the stuff you see on those live music shows, the girl- and boy-band pop groups, the idol stars, the overchoreographed dances, the lip-synching Barbie dolls. But the industry has diversified — there are so many niches now, subgenres, pockets of creativity — and while “mainstream pop” used to be all there was, now there are alternatives. So does kpop suck these days? Some of it really, really does. But some of it really, really doesn’t.

The following takes a look at the mainstream market and finds hope for the future of popular music.

2007 showed a different side than what the music industry has seen for the past few years. Up through last year, the state of affairs looked dark as things declined with no bottom in sight, but this year, there were singers whose successful hits shined a bit of light. Here, we take a look at a few of the praiseworthy singers who’ve enabled the pop music industry to look once more to a hopeful future. …

Who voted?

Actor Song Il Kook

Or perhaps the question should be: Who’s getting attention for voting?

On the 19th (yesterday in Korea if we’re going by the time difference), Korea held its presidential elections. (Psst. Lee Myung-bak won.)

As for voting — turnout was low, but that didn’t stop the celebrities from showing up to exercise their civic duty. As with anything, people are much more interested when a famous person does it! (God I feel shallow).

Some highlights:

Lee Young Ae: The A-list actress got up early to cast her vote at 6:50am: “I’m a morning person.”

Actress Kim Hee Sun arrived at 4pm in Kangnam to vote quickly and speed away; her husband voted at a different station, since the newlywed couple’s marriage registration paperwork isn’t complete yet.
