You're Beautiful Korean Drama
You're Beautiful
Korean title: 미남이시네요
Alternate title: He's Beautiful
SBS, 16 episodes
October 7, 2009 – November 26, 2009

A sweet, naive nun-in-training (Park Shin-hye) is convinced to stand in for her twin brother as a popular Kpop idol, requiring her to live and work with his idol group, headed by the very uptight leader (Jang Geun-seok). She has to dance and sing and act like a dude, while dodging suspicion from all quarters: the diehard fangirls, the rival starlets (UEE), and trickiest of all, her live-in bandmates (Jung Yong-hwa, Lee Hong-ki). The comedy practically writes itself.

by | January 31, 2017 | 485 Comments
javabeans: Second leaaaaaaads! Where would we be without them? girlfriday: Happier, probably. javabeans: But also maybe more bored? Because c’mon, a well-placed second lead (and his unrequited love for the heroine) can provide a certain crackle to a juicy romance, even if sometimes that crackle often comes with big booming pain. girlfriday: I just mean... Thing vs. Thing: Foursomes 4eva
by | June 4, 2012 | 179 Comments
girlfriday: So there’s this strange phenomenon in dramaland, whereby everything good comes in groups of four. Why is this? Who determined that four should be the magic number? javabeans: I think, as with so many things, we can trace the root of the problem to Boys Before Flowers. girlfriday: It’s a great mystery of the... First, I’d like to start by thanking Sarah for inviting me to be a guest reviewer. I must admit that I was, at first, a bit daunted (okay, scared ****less would be more precise), but how else could I begin to pay a little back to those who have given me so much? I’m neither... More »

All told, a pretty fun year [Year in Review, Part 4]
by | December 29, 2009 | 142 Comments
After a pretty meh 2008, I was ready for the drama landscape to fire back up with 2009. And while there were a number of misses and disappointments — isn’t there always? — I was pretty satisfied with the dramas I watched in 2009. I still don’t think there were as many top offerings as,... More »

A newbie reviews 2009 [Year in Review, Part 3]
by | December 29, 2009 | 154 Comments
My pick for Drama of the Year: City Hall. I’ll start of with an admission.  When javabeans asked me to give my thoughts on 2009, I was pretty excited, and agreed without much thought.  After all, 2009 was the best year of k-drama watching I’ve ever had.  But then it hit me: 2009 was also the...
