Yoon Kye-sang (Who Are You?, Road No. 1) and Jung Yumi (Oki’s Movie, Que Sera Sera) (two of my favorites!) are starring in an upcoming movie together, called Come, Closer.

This project was announced last year, but news has been fairly quiet about it until now, with the film slated for theatrical release next month. It’s also the sexiest I’ve ever seen Jung Yumi looking, with her smoky eyes and trendy clothing. (She’s tended to play eccentric, 4-D oddballs in most of her roles.)

The movie is an omnibus feature that follows the broken relationships of five couples: Yoon and Jung play one couple, and indie-pop singer Yozoh and Yoon Hee-seok (Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child) form another pairing. (Others haven’t been listed yet, but initial reports made mention of a gay couple being among them.) A bit of trivia: Jung Yumi and Yozoh have acted together before in the indie film Cafe Noir, which was Yozoh’s acting debut.

Yoon Kye-sang (Executioners) has announced his next project, which will be an omnibus film called Just A Little Closer [조금만 더 가까이] in which he’ll act without pay.

The film will weave together five vignettes and will be made with a relatively modest 100 million won budget ($86,000). Each storyline is a different kind of love story, with one being about a couple that reunites after breaking up and another featuring a gay couple. Directing is Kim Jong-kwan, who won an audience award at the Resfest digital film festival and screened at foreign short film festivals with his 2004 How to Operate a Polaroid Camera.

Yoon will take the role of a man who experiences a change of heart after reuniting with a former girlfriend. A rep from the film production team said, “Yoon Kye-sang and the other cast members readily agreed to act without pay because they agreed with the director who wants to focus on the quality of the film as a whole rather than thinking of commercial appeal.”

Shooting will begin at the end of November with the intention of being screened at Pusan International Film Festival and other prominent festivals. In addition to Yoon Kye-sang, also cast is singer-turned-actress Yozoh, who made her acting debut in the well-received small film Cafe Noir.

Cafe Noir is notable for being the debut film for its director, film critic Jung Sung-il. It is also now notable for drawing praise at its world premiere screening at the recent Venice International Film Festival (as the only selection from Asia).

Cafe Noir was described by one of the festival’s executive committee members as showcasing a unique form, while a selection committee member praised it as “a film that you don’t often see from a new director.” A section director said, “When one discovers the hidden political message, which is sprinkled throughout the film, it would be difficult to suppress your astonishment at this film.”

The movie stars Shin Ha-kyun (Thirst) as a man who is addicted to sad love, Moon Jung-hee (My Sweet Seoul) as the woman who “loves him to death,” and Kim Hye-na (Yoga School) as the woman who loves him “more than life” (isn’t that the same thing?). Jung Yumi (Chaw, Que Sera Sera) and “Hongdae uljjang” singer Yozoh are two women who hurt him, whom he decides to meet again in order to get over his pain.

Cafe Noir will also screen at the upcoming Pusan International Film Festival in October, which will be its first showing to Korean audiences. After all that praise (and mention of a hidden message), this is one I really want to see! I suppose critiquing films for a living gives one particular insight into knowing what does and doesn’t work for a film.
