Jang Hyuk, who needs no introduction, answers questions you submitted in his recent Ask an Actor post.

prettysup: What is your criteria when choosing a role? Do you accept it because you are confident of pulling it off? Or you want to try something new? #

earthna: I’m wondering how scenes that require long dialogues were shot. There were really long dialogues in Deep Rooted Tree that were not just long but very emotional as well. Any know how to ace such scenes? #

R.L.: You have done countless of action scenes and you are terrific in them. Was there any one action scene where you were most worried about? In terms of complexity of the action sequence or the risks of injury? #

YY: Do you laugh that booming laugh in Fated in real life as well? #

Omg! Thanks for picking my question!
Jang Hyuk is so cool! And it's really interesting to see him be calm and soft spoken as compared to his louder characters in dramas. Jang Hyuk, fighting!

I always feel like rewatching that drama. If only the 24 episodes length wasn't such a commitment.

When the acting AND writing is as good as it is in Tree and SFD, the number of episodes don't matter to me. In fact, I dread when it will be over.

3

I rewatch it every now and then and skip to get to the highlights fast. Hehe

There was another one in SFD with Kim Myung Min and Chun Ho-jin. Very impressive and these veteran actors pulled it off perfectly.

Thank you, @stroopwafel and all the DB Minions who helped make this video interview possible. I've been keeping my eyes peeled for it since April. What a treat to hear from Jang Hyuk himself. Great questions, Beanies! His thoughtful responses reminded me all over again why he has been one of my most favorite actors since discovering Kdramaland. It felt as if he were speaking directly to me. I appreciate his making the time in his schedule to answer our questions.

Now we finally know that The Laugh truly is Lee Gun's. ;-)

I'm tickled to bits that Jang Hyuk's next production is a sageuk. I'm really looking forward to his return to Goryeo while reprising Lee Bang-won in MY COUNTRY.

O god! I can’t stop smiling! My heart!
I watched it many times.. The first round I watched without reading the sub, just looking at him, his lips, his hair, his gaze. Listening to his voice which was new to me and as he said it is different from what I had in my mind based on his dramas.
O dear, we WILL continue to give you attention! How can we not?!

I'm only disappointed that I didn't get to hear his real laugh. As I think about, I don't think I've ever heard him full on laugh, even the few times I've seen him on variety shows. I've seen him smile in response to jokes, but never outright laugh.

1

Me too. I kept thinking, "he's going to do that maniacal laugh--that isn't his natural, soft spoken laugh--at any time. And then. . .he didn't. : (
Otherwise, I enjoyed this interview. Good questions, y'all.

I have seen him joking on variety shows but you always have to take a moment to realize he's joking because he doesn't laugh. He'll just eventually have a slow smile.

Wow, what a surprise. I've never been very drawn to this actor because I felt he was to gruff and brusk no matter which character he was playing. I particularly didn't like his voice. But in "Real Life" (of this interview) he is completely different and so much more appealing. I love his voice here. Here he seems warm and inviting and like someone who would make a good and kind friend.

Once you pick yourself up off the floor, could you enlighten us as to which role you're considering performing in MY COUNTRY, or any other drama. I have an inkling we'll be seeing you in Goryeo come September. Might it be another geographical feature? Lee Bang-won's sword? The Strife of Princes? No pressure, of course. ;-)

*rubs hands in gleeful anticipation of MY COUNTRY*

You and me both, @kiara! And thankfully we've got a couple of months to decompress after NOKDU FLOWER, which has been stunning and intense. It's exhilarating and depressing at the same time. I feel as if I've been running a sageuk marathon this year ever since CROWNED CLOWN premiered and then ovelapped with the start of HAECHI, which overlapped with NOKDU's premiere. I've been late to the two subsequent parties because the earlier shows' finales hadn't aired, and hogged my bandwidth something fierce. What an embarrassment of riches.

I just watched ep. 23 raw, and the momentum never lets up. NOKDU is simply one of the best sageuks I've ever watched, from first to last. Keep your eyes peeled for a couple of cameos in the finale. I would deanimate for joy if there's one by Lee Moon-sik, who played the original Geoshigi aka "Thingy" in ONCE UPON A TIME IN A BATTLEFIELD and BATTLEFIELD HEROES. Fingers crossed. Geronimo! ;-)

He's the first K actor that I ever fell in love with and the top spot he occupies in my heart has never been eclipsed despite the wonderful array of actors I've since discovered. It all began with Thank You and then Tree with Deep Roots. I've not looked back since. He was utterly mesmerizing in Money Flower.

I forgot which Jang Hyuk fans told me this (maybe it was here or on twitter?) When we were collecting questions for Jang Hyuk, they joked that we should prepare a longer clip, because their Oppa is really thoughtful and gives out long answers. I only remembered their comment when I watched the edited video and he's very serious about answering. His fans really knew Jang Hyuk well... XD

@mary,
I got the same impression from reading an interview with him a couple of years ago. He discussed how he analyzes and develops his approach to a character. He's very methodical about it, and seems to really enjoy that diagnostic aspect of acting.

Aha, I think this is the interview, in two parts:

http://www.hancinema.net/interview-actor-jang-hyeok--part-1-22564.html

http://www.hancinema.net/interview-actor-jang-hyeok--part-2-22563.html

It's from around the time he was filming CHUNO. Very insightful and detailed. If you haven't already seen it, enjoy! <3
