Minwoo credits/blames Dong Wan for going solo

Minwoo was on an episode of the talk show Yashimmanman that aired on the 12th, where he talked about being the first of the Shinhwa boys to go solo — citing oversensitive Dong Wan as one of his reasons.

(God, will you look at those eyes? How can a guy have such pretty anime-like eyes? You know, people slag on Minwoo’s height all the time but I think it’s a good thing he’s not taller — just imagine how annoying he’d be if he added heart-swoony tallness to all his attributes. He’d be totally conceited without some major flaw holding him back. I mean, look at Daniel Henney. The guy’s stunningly beautiful but I’m pretty sure he’s also insufferable. I have not liked him in one single interview I’ve seen him give. Which would be more overlookable, say, if he were actually talented. But for all the apologists out there — Have you SEEN “Seducing Mr. Perfect”??)

Whoa, major sidebar there. Back to Minwoo and Dong Wan.

Okay, so it turns out the full story’s not nearly as dramatic as it sounds. During their days of living in the same house, Minwoo found that the only time he could work on writing songs was when he was alone in his room at night, trying to keep quiet and wearing headphones. But Kim Dong Wan, in the next room, would always know and come by, saying, “Hey, keep quiet! I’m trying to sleep!”

Minwoo would therefore try to find places to work alone, and in the end decided to go solo. He expressed how he felt living with the Shinhwa members: “Back then, it was really my dream to go solo, but now I really miss those days.”

(He also revealed some stories from those days, such as the time someone had put a ketchup bottle in the shower instead of shampoo — and when Andy tried to wash his hair, he shouted in shock, “Ah! My head’s bleeding!” Heh.)

chuck? chuck norris? you know...Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding. When Chuck Norris was denied an Egg McMuffin at McDonald's because it was 10:35, he roundhouse kicked the store so hard it became a Wendy's. Also, the Bermuda Triangle used to be the Bermuda Square, until Chuck Norris Roundhouse kicked one of the corners off. And Chuck Norris doesnt wear a watch, HE decides what time it is.

Minwoo doesn't read like he's blaming....more like it was his goal from the start even if he referred to dong wan...and it also seems like dong wan was joking around with the "quiet" stuff. But whever I see that guy on TV and he has that smug look on his face...I feel like giving him a Chuck Norris roundhouse kick to open his eyes.

Haha...maggchung,
I noticed the Oldboy poster, too, in the first or second episode, but totally forgot about it! Too bad the Stanford episode wasn't really filmed at Stanford. My husband kept complaining about it, although he thought they did a pretty good job with the student ID's.

hehehe I couldn't help but laugh when I read the last part about Andy, its so like him. I bet he gets pick on alot since he's the youngest one. He seems so innocent. But onto Minwoo and Dongwan, Minwoo probably didn't mean for it to sound harsh. Ofcourse I'm sure all of those guys had dreams about going solo but the funny thing is now that they're all doing their own projects they miss each other.

I absolutely love Andy and Dong Wan. They're both so adorable!! Out of the all the Shinhwa members, I love Andy and Dong Wan!! It took me a while to get used to Minwoo, I used to perceive him as someone like Justin Timberlake: Talented, famous but whose songs/image are overplayed/over-dramatized. Maybe it's because every Korean (female) friend I have rant and rave about him and it just gets a little old? A little biased, I know, hahahaha. XD

I swear, all the Shinhwa members seem to be really close to each other. I like seeing close bonds like that, it makes me feel good to know that they have each other's backs when they always put themselves out there on stage and in the media for a living. It can be hard to be an artist sometimes... =]

haha...i couldn't help but laugh at the Andy part...
Honestly, i dont think i have ever heard a whole song by Shinhwa but i LOVE watching their interviews and show appearances. Those guys always manage to make me laugh. they seem to have such a great bond...

it's funny that you love his eyes so much Javabeans because i remember seeing him in a show where he mentioned the part of his face that he is least comfortable with are his eyes...

I also think he is a good looking guy and dont mind that he is short either lol...but imagine if he was taller? wooow....

oh i totally think he was teasing/being playful, like rocketfuel said. those shinhwa guys luuurve each other way too much for internal discord, heh.

isn't jun jin the baby of the group?

and chuck, yay! i still can't love sarah that much but i like her much better as (spoiler for this/next week?) dumped/jealous than her character has been so far. LOVE chuck. i hope they keep him way geeked out, unlike adam brody who hipped up way too quickly in the o.c. love the sister -- i can't believe i first remember her from being on saved by the bell: the new class. (o, private shame)

I don't know about you, but if his eyes are that small up close, I don't think I'll be able to find them if he moves away.

It looks like he has eyeliner? Hmm.

andy's the baby...he's younger by about 5mths, i think?...i believe he calls everyone (but junjin?) hyung.
ah. shinhwa. the only group i'll go fan girlie over if im in the mood.
i really like lee minwoo as an independent artist. the guy has a lot of talent. he writes, composes, choreographs, and sings pretty well too. never got into any of the other as solo musicians (shin hyesung has a great voice but just by itself it doesn't move me, dongwan has some good songs here and there). but lee minwoo can definitely set the mood, make a bang, get the party going...in fact a friend who makes fun of me all the time for loving k-music heard "play my song" ft tigerjk in my car and begged me for that one song because the beat is just too good. so while he isn't me favorite shinhwa member, he's definitely one of my favorite musicians. :)

you're right... if minwoo was tall he'd probably be the most arrogant, most beautiful creature in k-pop. :)

also, i was wondering if any of you guys saw Daniel Henney's My Father. I saw Seducing Mr. Perfect and it was just painful lol... but I'm hoping his acting improved... i don't remember what award it was, but he did win something for that movie.

Haha razzie! He doesn't even deserve that. Seducing Mr. Perfect was painful to watch and nothing could have made it better.

M's eyes are amazing. I used to have that picture on my computer at work. After some lady screamed my ear off about her pension, I would just stare at him and my picture of Jun Jin until I had a goofy fangirl smile on my face.

I can totally see that being true about Dong Wan. He seems to be a little annoying but a sweetheart none the less. I also think I remember M telling this story before. Thanks for sharing, I will look out for the episode!

@hjk -
it was totally too bad they didn't film at Stanford! i'm a Berkeley alum but i don't hold any grudges against the S, seeing as how some of my friends graduated there. but i think Stanford is too snooty to allow such a nascent show to film on their sacred grounds. sacred boring grounds. flat flat flat. i have no grudge 'gainst Stanford. but HECK YEA, GO BEARS! BUT! but! i am thankful to Stanford for one thing - - you guys beat USC in college football this season. woohoo! down with USC!

javabeans - i, too, am worried they might cop out and cool up Chuck too soon. and agreed on Sarah. something is off about her. i'm particularly bothered by her teeth. especially when she has her mouth closed, it's almost bordering on beaver-ish...ish. that or she used to have a gap between her teeth and recently got it fixed to land this role. i duno. but something. weird. off. really don't like her in her Wienerlicious get up.

rocketfuel i like the Chuck of the Norris but dude. it's all about Sammo Hung and MARTIAL LAW!

and whoever mentioned that Seducing Mr. Perfect was a pain to watch...oh man, it REALLY was painful. i wanted to climb out of my own skin. and my teeth itched.

I think Minwoo's shortness (which I swear is not that short, I mean 172 cm is decentish...for asian guys...alright I'm a little biased :D) makes him able to look cute and sexy and hot at the same time without looking weird. And man I love his eyes, and his facial structure (his nose is SO nice and straight and I love his smile) and his body (Eric calls it a 'work of art' and Chae Yeon said he had sexy abs too :D He showed it on Come to Play with Dongwan and man...*drool*)

He's said the story about going solo on Come to Play when Dongwan was on it with him and I just love the Shinhwa love :D They are just the bestest group (to me :D I am a hardcore fan of theirs so I am biased :D) and even though they do market their friendship, you can't really act some of the stuff they say and do about each other. They are such close friends.

Minwoo looks like a player/womanizer but he's not known as one (like he's not on the news and stuff for dating heaps of girls) and he's really sweet to his girlfriend before and he seems like such a sweet person. I always read news about him they say how nice he is to everyone in the media circle and I've never read news about him being an a**hole. Actually all of Shinhwa sound like they're really nice to everyone :D I can't believe I ranted so long about them...But yea I love them heaps and I can't wait for their 9th album :D GO SHINHWA!

Did I mention Minwoo is talented as well? Singing, dancing, chereographing, composing, writing and he even plays the piano. Ahh he's awesome :D

I was lucky enough to see Minwoo when I was in Korea. Yes he is quite short but very tan and handsome.
My friend suggested we stop in this CD shop and turns out Minwoo was coming to have a signing. I was way too nervous to actually get in line to get my CD signed, though. I really regret not doing it now:(

I'm a Cal alum, too, so I just enjoyed watching my husband cringe at the "supposed" Stanford campus. You can imagine our house at Big Game time. At least, he and I are on the same side when it comes to USC. Down with the Trojans! GO BEARS!!!

I admire MinWoo for his talents in composing and arranging his own music, as well as his choreography, but I really don't like his greasy image. I loved "The M Style" off his new album... until I saw him perform live with all those sexy dancers and another rapper instead of Tablo... The MV is even worse...

Xena... I see that word used sometimes and think that's because the word for "greasy" (food) is also the same word for "sleazy" (human) and often the first meaning is applied to the second literally. It might be the result of watching some poorly (or too-literally) translated kdramas...

#25/ #26 Not sure. Some of the Filipina/o/s I know (including some who can't stand KDramas -- yes, there are some such folk -- and who won't have been influenced by Konglish subtitling) use "greasy" in just this this sense, too. I rather assumed it was a fossilized piece of US slang left over from the (US) colonial period, though long since vanished from mainstream US usage. I do have a historical dictionary of US slang somewhere in my bookheaps, but I can't find it right now.

Sorry, I did try to work the "edit" feature on #27 within the ten-minute grace period, but it crashed my browser, so here's an addition in a separate post.

Oxford English Dictionary greasy (adjective) sense 7
7. Filthy, obscene, low.
1588 SHAKES. Loves Labours Lost IV. i. 139 You talke greasely, your lips grow foule.. 1598 MARSTON Sco. Villainie I. iii. 79 Chaste cells, when greasie Aretine For his rank Fico, is surnam'd diuine. 1614 B. JONSON Bart. Fair II. i, Let's away, her language grows greasier than her pigs. 1687 SETTLE Refl. Dryden 5 His greasy Jest. 1814 Way to win Her III. i, Kettle of fish! O fie; how could you possibly pick up so coarse and greasy an idea?

So it goes back to The Bard, and was prevalent in Britain at the right sort of period for it to migrate to the US, but no mainstream appearance later than 1814. I still suspect some sort of US slang transmission to the Philippines and, apparently, Korea.

Oh my, so what my lovelies up there are referring to as 'greasy' I personally very proudly interpret as damn sexy, go figure we can't all be tickled by the same feather folks. I encountered the term twice here and quite literally cried my ass off from laughing. Heck it still tickles me.

javabeans, thank-you for the clarification and to Gramps for the extensive slang/word, (literal and metaphorical) detailing of, the evolution of; all things 'greasy'.

Sorry that I've misused the word 'greasy' here as English isn't my native language. Thanks Javabeans and Gramps for the information. I've searched google for examples of the word 'greasy' used to describe people and here are some of them.

"Unlike Orlando, Moe was apparently somewhat of a reprobate who, at the tender age of 19, left home to seek his fortune in Italy. The story unfolds that Moe eventually settled in Vaselino, a small town on the island of Sicily, where he became a rather greasy character." - Convocation address by Dr. Donald F. Cook (http://www.mun.ca/president/99-00report/honor/honorary_cook.html)

"His dancing was spectacular, as was his acting; he jumped into a deep plié and then effortlessly leapt up again, while, with the tilt of his head and twist of his shoulders, keeping the wheedling, greasy character alive." - In "New Chestnuts and Pirate Ships" by Mary Cargill (1998), Danceview (Washington, D.C.) (http://www.danceview.org/reviews/ABT/abt98.htm)

"In Czechoslovakia it is enough to speak English on a train to have some greasy character sidling up to you with a hard luck story." - In "Radical Making and Unmaking - The Early Careers of Stephen Murray-Smith and Ken Gott" by John McLaren, The La Trobe Journal, No. 63, Autumn 1999 (http://calisto.slv.vic.gov.au/latrobejournal/issue/latrobe-63/t1-g-t4.html)

"I was nineteen, a mere child, an infant, and here in the space of five minutes I'd struck down one greasy character and blundered into the waterlogged carcass of a second..." - "Boyle's 'Greasy Lake' and the moral failure of postmodernism - T. Coraghessan Boyle", Studies in Short Fiction (Spring, 1994) by Michael Walker (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m2455/is_n2_v31/ai_15557254/pg_5)

Ok. 172? That's about 5cm padding added to his internet profile. I wouldn't put him over 165. It's embarrassing to say, but my first sentence in Korea was, "Lee Min Woo is handsome." I'm dead serious. Granted, that was a reeealy long time ago. Eventhough my first k-pop love was Lee Min Woo, I've since moved on to more exciting, ahem taller K-stars. After seeing him on many variety programs, I'd have to say that the comment about him being greasy wasn't too far off if you directly translate from Korean. You could even call him the butter (or grease, the less tactful version) king (but I think that title was given to Sung Shi Kyung a long time ago...).

I haven't finished reading this article yet, but I had to post because I totally agree with you on the Daniel Henney comment. My friends don't seem to care that he comes off as really arrogant when talking to people, especially when they don't speak english very well...soo arrogant...grr!! Oh well, I guess it can't be helped, but I'm glad someone agrees with me.
