Oh. No. They. Di’n’t.

Because it wasn’t enough to trot out fifteen-year-olds who can’t sing as sexually suggestive coquettes, now a nine-member “kiddie group” called Sweety is making its debut, with members ranging in age from 13 down to its 6-year-old “mascot.” (Btw, that’s eight girls, one boy. He be da pimp.)

They’re being touted as a group with singing skills “on par with adult groups.” If those adult groups mean the Wonder Girls, that’s not saying much. (Before you get offended: listen to this. Or this. Or this. Or this. My opinion is, if they put out such “professional” performances, they’re fair game to be called on it.)

I have nothing against the idea of a pop group aimed at a younger generation — heck, I grew up watching Kids Incorporated and Sesame Street, and my first music record (and nearly last, toy record players being pretty inferior products) was a Care Bears compilation. But it’s not the concept itself that has me feeling uneasy; it’s the tone and content of its marketing.

Singing aside, I’m disturbed at this trend for younger and younger teenage pre-teen poptarts, using the innocent “cute” defense to gloss over any suggestive implications that lie therein. Look, I’m not going call it pedophilic or accuse this group of being blatantly sexual, because I don’t think that’s true. But the point is that the slippery slope is getting slipperier with these mixed messages and crossed signals — tell me Sweety has nothing to do with the sex-peddling marketing strategies behind equally squicky Lolita-laden Wonder Girls or Girls Generation.

You can’t quite defend the choice of costuming as being innuendo-free when those short-short miniskirts are put on by adult stylists onto prepubescent girls — look at those two girls in the middle with their hands on their hips and their hips stuck out in their “Who, me?” faux-innocence poses. Is the coquetry a conscious gesture or has the image become so pervasive that these young girls have adopted it as the norm? Or are they being coached to act that way by their handlers? (ALL of those options seem creepy and unfortunate to me.) And do I see bare MIDRIFF with that cropped top? Even Wonder Girl Sohee admitted just this week that she used to shorten her skirts on her school uniforms. What, did she not have enough leg-baring and hip-swiveling in her day job?

Sweety’s first mini-album reportedly boasts “hip-hop rhythms” with “cute choreography,” and they’ve just filmed their first music video. That video had better be full of stuffed animals, dancing rabbits and animated birds, is all I’m sayin’. Leave the sexy stuff to the adults and let kids be kids, already.

Cable channel Mnet will start airing the group on July 22; a mini-album is set to go on sale soon.

This is a disturbing reflection of the moral decay our "civilised" world is going through. It doesn't really shock me, because sexualizing kids is not a new trend. If I were a parent though, I'd ban my kids from buying any merchandize associated with these child tarts.

i can honestlt say that i dont really have a problem with snsd as much as wonder girls... but i guess they are all old enough to make their own decisions and object to the clothes given to them. i myself am only 15 and i do think that wonder girls are over exposing themselves. the girls of sweety shouldnt really be wearing high heels. i dont know how the girls can wear skirts that short because i myself am not comfortable wearing that (but it could just be my lack of self confidense) and the last time i wore heels was to a wedding and i wasnt too fond of it. even so, i do see your point about wonder girls and snsd, however snsd has older girls in their group then wonder girls but i do think that their clothing choices on air and during performances are controlled by their coordinators. even though i've said this the american industry is different compared to over there so its pretty much out of our hands. if thats how they want to do it then well they can but everyone's views are different so what really matters are facts and not opinion. then again i am only 15 so my opinion really doesnt count in the masses either.

i watched their mv..not sexually blatant at ALL!.. they are being kids.. as for their costumes... i've never worn long dresses when i was younger.. NEVER! I avoided them like the blague.. There is nothing sexual about it... i must be too naive then... i agree that wonder girls and snsd are a little risque when it comes to their outfits and some of their performances.... so u got a point there..the only thing that concerns me about this group is their age...some of them are tooo young... but i saw nothing sexual about their image..NOTHING!! i'm starting to wonder how u came out with that .... if anything you should protest the parents for making little kids enter such a ruthless industry,....

I agree with you on that. I mean, don't get me wrong, i like the wonder girls and all, but they are just too young to be dressing like that. Imagine those children who look up to them. I sure as hell wouldn't want my little girl running in clothes like that, and give me an excuse, "but the wonder girls wear this mommy". The horror.

WTF? Who would their... music even appeal to?! Are men so desperate nowadays that they find them "attractive?" I mean, I've got nothing against child stars, long as they can juggle an education, but this is crossing the boundary. Look, you don't put six/eight year olds in freakin' miniskirts, high heels, and midriff baring shirts! That's just..... sick.... soooooooo freakin' damn sick. I mean, yeah, people like BoA debuted at thirteen, but 1). at least she's a damn teen and 2). She was wearing a freakin' BODY SUIT. Yeesh, leave the sexy image to the older ones who actually have the confidence, maturity, and BODY to pull it off, like Chae Yeon and Hyori. I mean, even BoA, who debuted at 13/14, at least waited until she was of age to start going for a more sexy image and even then, she kept to pants. And what about their parents! They're actually okay with their daughters doing this? WTF?

What's the world coming to these days?

Wow where do you start with this topic hmmm!

The whole Junior Idols thing appears to be an industry in need of a major 'Shake-Up' for some years now, more particularly in Japan where it seems that Under 15's Idols have become a whole industry in itself and a confusing mass of legitimate Talents amongst a vast amount of what is seen by the West and much of the East as 'Totally Inappropriate' imagary of Minors.

Young Male Teenagers and 'Adults' posting photos and exchanging wallpapers of the likes of Saaya Irie at age 11, 12,13 may think it is cool in idolising such performers and arguing the fact that it is legitimate currently in Japan, however, in doing so they are also condoning the exploitation of 'Very Young Children' and those who prey on the Aspirations of the young. The fact is, there is a behind the scenes element to the Junior Idols industry that pedals the euqivelant of 'Soft Child Porn' under the guise of 'Junior Idols' and 'Cosplay' and I'm certain that if many who post photos of such idols were totally aware of that, then they may think twice and consider the bigger picture.

Terms and Fashions such as 'Lolita Fashion' and 'Gothic Lolita' have become immense in popularity over the years amongst adults, nothing wrong with that, however, it does become a problem when those in the 'So Called' Junior Idols Industries adopt these looks and themes to Market Children, fact is an 11 year old girl in a Shorts Skirt Maids Outfit and High Heels Posing Provocatively is seen by a majority of caring adults globally as unacceptable.

If the more 'Sleezy' side of that industry is not addressed and seen as acceptable, then it is, unfortunately going to open the flood gates to more mainstreem promoters of young Talents such as the groups you highlight to market those youngsters in those similar ways.

I have a little 11 year-old sister who is in "training" and doing auditions for different acting jobs and though I have to admit she´s very pretty and talented for a child acting-wise and often get´s told that by people outside of the family (she has a big head sometimes because of it, lol) however because she dresses her age, a.k.a no short skirts, high heels and revealing tops she often gets put off to the side for those girls that are made to look 18 when they are barely even 12... (I was surprised by one girl in my sister´s company that looked to be at least 18 and turned out to be 10... my eyes went O.o )

I guess my sister who dresses in cute girly dresses that make her look her age (sometimes even younger) and not older is no competition for those that dress up to please pedophilic tendencies in the audience.... It´s a shame though, because it´s sick to use kids like that especially so early on in their lives...

I really wonder what kind of parents the kids who like those in Sweety dress way above their age range have...

My mom, sure she´s not a stay at home mom and my dad is also not Mr. mom but even though they work they make sure that whatever my sister is doing and how she is doing it won´t in the end hurt her physically or psychologically...

Good thing also that my little sister totally adores us her older sisters and follows what we say pretty well also, so she doesn´t feel that she needs to wear those types of clothes...
