Behind the scenes on Director Gu’s set

Following her last drama, Strongest Chil Woo, actress Gu Hye-sun is now turning her attentions to her pet project: her directing debut.

The short film project written and directed by Gu is named The Cheerful Caretaker and deals with the sobering topic of euthanasia. Gu updated her personal mini-homepage on the 18th to show behind-the-scenes photos of the shooting, many showing her in action behind the camera.

The film was submitted to the Pusan International Film Festival this year, but failed to make the final cut. (Although that’s too bad for the film, I actually appreciated hearing this, since we always see actors getting special “star treatment” when venturing forth into areas outside of acting and immediately being lauded for their skills, sometimes for good reason but many times not. See: Kim Ah-joong, Kim Hye-soo, Yoon Eun-hye, Jung Ryeo-won, So Ji-sub and others.) It also makes accomplishments by other actor-directors, like the multiple awards won by Yoo Ji-tae, seem that much more admirable.

Kind of weird seeing her behind the camera instead of in front of it.

Whoa. Euthanasia?
This is probably the first I've heard of a Korean film around that topic.

Uhmm... and it got cut why?
I get that if it like sucked because she's a bad director.
But that's such a big subject.
And at the same time, it would get so much attention.
I don't think people see how big it is, and with Gu Hyesun attached to it,
I'm surprised people haven't taken much interest.

Btw, isn't she with YG?
I'm surprised they let her direct.

Awesome of her though.
Props.

So good to see my little "Gukwha" doing so well and being able to unleash her talents upon the world. I'm still astounded at how far she has come after starting out as just another hopeful ulllzang with a dream. Her smile and cheerfulnesss could have been enough, but she appears to offer us so much more.

On a selfish note...I'd like to see her smiling again in her next project after spending time being chased and tormented through two succcessive period-pieces. I miss that little "chickenhead" from Yanbian!!!
