News bites: September 29, 2008

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these, huh?

  • Newlywed Park Eun-hye is returning to work following a recent miscarriage of what would have been her “honeymoon baby” (she wed in April). She plans to attend the upcoming Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF), which screens her film Night and Day.
  • Speaking of which, Kim Rae-won (Gourmet) and Han Eun-jung (Lawyers of Korea) will take a particular place on Wednesday’s opening-night red carpet at PIFF, as brand models for the festival’s sponsor, L’Oreal Paris.
  • Song Il-kook had his day in court and won; the reporter who accused him of assault (whom he countersued for false accusations) has been sentenced to a year’s imprisonment. Ouch. We may never know the truth of whether he struck her as claimed, but a year in the slammer seems harsh. Well, that’s what happens when you go up against a rich actor with powerful connections.
  • Sigh. Things are hard enough for Ahn Jae-hwan’s widow Jung Sun-hee, whose husband killed himself over large amounts of debt, and has endured accusations of kidnapping Ahn by his sister. She underwent an additional round of police questioning, spending four hours at the police station on the 29th. Jung roundly denies Ms. Ahn’s claims, and also denies rumors that she’s heading overseas for rest (which doesn’t sound like a bad idea, actually — the press was all over her collapses at Ahn’s funeral, and she again collapsed after emerging from the police station).
  • I don’t think many people outside of Korea are watching cable drama Chosun Police [조선과학수사대 별순검], but the MBC Dramanet fusion sageuk gained a following as a “Chosun-era CSI” and is now set to launch its season 2. The production press conference was on the 29th, featuring lead actor Lee Jong-hyuk, who admitted he’d purposely avoided watching Season 1; he wanted to differentiate his character from its original actor, Ryu Seung-ryong.
  • Kim Min-jung (26, of New Heart) has been cast in the lead of MBC’s drama 2009 Foreign Baseball Team, which was originally a hit manhwa in the ’80s. Actors Yoon Tae-young (Legend‘s Hogae), Park Sung-min (Legend‘s Saryang), Park Jung-hak (Kingdom of the Wind), Song Ah-young (Moon Hee), and Kim Sun-kyung (Legend‘s Lady Yeon) are also cast. There’s a whole lotta Legend there. It should air sometime next year.
  • After spending most of his recent energies trying to make a dent in the international film scene, Rain is back to kpop after two years away with his fifth album. He’s announced that his title track will be a dance song, followed by a ballad, to go on sale in October. Rain, here’s a fundamental rule of showbiz: Show, not tell. We’re happy to welcome ya back if your work is good, but g/d I’m sick of hearing so much about it.

love the news bites!
-I had sort of hoped Song Il Kook would have some mercy on the woman. He knew he threatened to send her to the slammer but thought he would be a gentleman about it and not let that happen. He could have just gotten her fired and unable to work in her field again. A jail-time record is pretty permanent and damaging.
-and poor Jung Sun-hee- to have your husband kill himself and then be accused of being involved. Sort of reminds me when Jung Da Bin committed suicide and everyone thought the grieving boyfriend killed her and then it turned out it was really a suicide
-and legend's Saryang! I loved that dude!

Poor Jung Sun-Hee. I wish the reporters would just let up. She looks miserable right now (and who wouldn't be?) First, finding out her husband died, then being questioned by the police, and reporters swarming her on top of it all.

It'd probably be easier if the reporters just turn a blind eye to her grief now, especially since they've already gotten the news of his death, the car he died in, her collapse at the news, and God knows what else.

Song II Kook.... I can't believe the woman got sentenced to 1 year in jail. I mean, yeah, his reputation as a star is important, but since he won the case, couldn't he just ask his lawyer to not press charges? That would've been the kindest thing to do. With this news, the woman probably wouldn't have been able to work as a reporter anymore anyway... *sigh* Stupid to go against someone so rich and powerful, whether or not the accusations were true.

@ Sue: I think her character had a difficult birth due to hypertension, and she almost died (but 'her' baby girl was fine).

Both Park Eun-Hye and Jung Sun-Hee must be going through really tough times. I hope the media doesn't hound Jung - but that's kind of a futile wish.

CSI: Chosun!! FC and I make jokes about that but we never expected that to actually happen...

Thanks for the news!

Song Il Kook... wow, i dunno what to say =X. Even if all those accusations were/are? true, thats not very gentlemanly. My sympathies are definitely with this woman.

Most people 'huh...?' at Chosun Police - never heard of it, which is a shame. It's one of those better dramas that get swept under because people don't know half of the cast (I prohibit myself from using the word 'underrated' AGAIN). Direct plots, logical clues and does not get itself entangled in the mayhem that comes with forensic scientists trying to be cowboy-detectives. I'm glad that it's back, and I'm happy that Lee Jong-hyuk is in it. I like him, despite what most say about his looks and acting.

Asianromance, Miki & Ter:

C'mmon people.... the case regarding SIG and the reporter is not something about proving SIG how gentleman he is... the reporter accused him a "woman beater" 2 months before his wedding and you expect him to let go of her just like that?!@ when the investigators cleared Song's name from the assault case, the reporter held a presscon again telling that the case was not over yet.... this obsessed reporter must learned how to apologize!!! and just because she's a woman she should be excused getting into jail??? she lied in public and still insists that she's innocent, she deserves to be in prison to be a perfect example for all the reporters who tends to abuse publicity!!!!

these commenters want him to let her go just because she is a woman? if this was the other way around and the reporter was a guy their reactions would have been different like let him rot in prison and all. As a woman myself i really get pissed off when women want advantage from men and preach about being equal and all that shit. If this reporter women really did tell a lie then that's a big offence in my book, she should own up to it like a real woman.
