Open Thread #57

Let’s see, what’s happened lately?

  • Prop 8. passed in California (for shame) and Keith Olbermann waxed poetic (and emotional) about it.
  • Not to diminish the importance of Olbermann’s comments (as if anyone could diminish Olbermann), I have to point to Ben Affleck’s awesome and slightly unhinged impression (also below) from a few weeks ago on SNL. (His Worst Person segment is where he really gets going, at the 4:30 mark, which leads into the particularly hilarious Special Comment at 3:20.)

  • Also, Twilight is coming out and who doesn’t care? (I don’t, I don’t.) But I do love how main actor Robert Pattinson basically calls Stephenie Meyer creepy for being in love with her fictional character. Ha!

    Yay you did it!

Aww, the SNL clip isn't avail in Canada. I'll just have to go Google it then. :D

As for the Twihards... well... I'm hovering between 'omg whut' and 'daaaaaamn they're crazy'. RPattz sounds like he's going to have a nervous breakdown - and he called her crazy again. At this point he's just not going to be fired, ever, no matter how hard he tries. (A 7 year-old asked him to bite her at one of the fanmeets, did you know? And all sorts of other insanity, but I would be spamming, I think.)

GoPop. 8. I talked to some people about it and the reasons some people gave for voting for it are simply ridiculous/dumb/shameful... like the ever popular, "but, then kids will have to learn about gay marriage at school!" because God forbid kids actuallylearn a thing or two about tolerance while they're stuffed in the hell hole called HS.

I've actually been really itching to write a parody story about a bunch of perfectly straight football players dropping to their knees and sucking each other off in the middle of the classroom the moment the words "...and gays can get married, too!" roll off the lips of their teachers.

I have a confession to make. My longtime friend who is an MA in literature and is married to a college English professor just told me this week that she just got into the Twilight series and tore through all the books, and for a minute, yes, I judged her.

Tearing through Twilight is easy.. while the books are long, they are so simplistic that they can be read in one sitting.

I read the first book and would have been able to enjoy it if I had been able to get the wailing feminist in my head to shut up about how idiotic the whole thing and how pathetic Bella was.

What is the book form of chick-flick? Babe-book? Anyways the series is Danielle Steele with vampires. They should've casted Fabio as the lead actor. Seems like instead of being made into a film series it belongs as a show on the WB.

Meyer is a genius in hypnotics...so Carina, nope it's not easy to tear thro any book as in reading when u have all the urges to have a shut eye EVERY other line, then every other word...
and also Ivuson, u will be sorely disappointed if u expect it to be at least having some cliched hot mess in any Steele. I mean I for one will give Meyer a compliment in reworking the chicklit on vampires and highsch to make this OH so 'refreshingly' boring and asexual....maybe that's what your friend is mesmerized with javabeans! And, y is it not ok to judge?! We passed Prop8 to judge, no?! lol I'm still trying my best to hide my frozen snide face whenever my 50ish coworkers/bosses r panting about their pedocrushes on EDWARD...

and m, I wish there was some bodice-ripping.
    and kotatsulove, guilty yes, pleasure...nope.

Yuck, Twilight. As one of my friends put it, "Stephanie Meyer had a great idea for a story,...and then wouldn't let anyone else write it. So we ended up with this romantic-creepy wording shit for a novel."

Twilight sucks...it just does, and I hate how 99% of the girls in my school basically WORSHIP the book. I mean, my friends even admit that the book is just...bad, but they like the romance. I think it's creepy (glittering vampires? da hell).

Twilight is really the kind of thing that I suspect I would have loved if I had read it when I was 12-15...

But now that I'm 20, I'm just way too grown-up to not find it creepy that Bella basically begs Edward to kill her and turn her into a vampire so they can live forebba and ebba after... like 2 weeks of knowing him.

I guess I didn't put as much emphasis on Bella's words. Either that or since I read it over a year ago I don't remember them being that creepy.

I started taking Korean language private lessons yesterday, and I'm totally excited. Wish me luck. :)

The teacher invited me to go to a local jjimjilbang along with another student of hers. I am a bit freaked out by the idea, being American, but still mulling it over. Would any of you guys go to one?

Also? I have no idea what Twilight is.

Totally, go to the jimjilbang! I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a mok-yok-tang (bath) but jimjilbangs aren't sketchy. Woo, korean lessons! Let me know if you've got any questions ;)

I wanna like Keith Olbermann, but it's strange how I can agree with almost everything he says but so dislike the way he says it. IMO, he'd be a lot more effective if he weren't so grandiloquent or pompous. He's obviously intelligent, but I feel like I'm being preached at. And the multiple camera angles! The Affleck parody pegged him on that one but good.

I flipped through Twilight, and good lord that book could have been published as a mass market paperback at half the size, without the HUUUGE font and tons of white space. It's like a metaphor for the book at large -- could have been pared down to a manageable size, but got lost in its own heft.

@Javabeans-Not only that, it's a pure escapist story about boy-worshipping. A guilty pleasure at best. Hearing it hailed as a great story irks me to no end, particularly when none of the characters are enjoyable. (Bella the damsel in distress particularly). And the plot is so farfetch it actually amazes this constant shojo manga reader. I mean, it's commercial teenfic, but really! This didn't even work as a guilty pleasure.

I read 100 pages, and...nothing happened in them. Even without the huge font and white space, the book could've been cut in 1/2. My friends have already bought their tickets a week in advance, and apparently it's sold out already in some places. Edward Collins also seems to be visiting (or maybe already have) and my friends also bought tickets... They're lost to me *shakes head*

Twilight sounds really good now . . .

I'm a HanaDan fan, so at the end of the day, I really have no right to judge Twilight fans. Though I'm sure Doumyouji can kick Edward's ass anyday of the year! Neener neener neener . . .

Isn't Twilight and Australia coming out at the same time?

"but so dislike the way he says it. IMO, he’d be a lot more effective if he weren’t so grandiloquent or pompous."

I read one of Meyer's short stories (guilty!) called Hell on Earth and it wasn't so bad... It's from a book of short stories called Prom Nights from Hell (tweeny stuff) but I tell you, it's worth reading just for that story. It was as hypnotizing as people say her writing is...

My little sister ragged at me on and on to read Twilight so I did quite some time back and I remember complaining about how the story went nowhere for the most part of the book... It only moved its butt towards the end and eventhough it wasn't bad but I didn't feel tempted to read the other books to my sister's disgust. Help! I live with a Twilight fan! She's dragging me to cinema with her when it comes out (though I admit I'm curious to see how the story will pan out.) After that, well, que sera sera, haha....

@belleza-Pure escapist story about boy-worshipping. That sounds so good right? Like HYD. Nut they're heaven and earth. Mostly because I keep getting kicked out of the fantasy by the words "WTH?" in my head, and I'd rather murder the boys then worship them.

BTW, Hana Yori Dango the Final has come out in subs! (or actually, yesterday). *Wee* I haven't watched it, but you can be sure I'll be making some room for Domyouji in my life.

@vrosemarie-I've heard that Stephanie Meyer's other books and stories are quite okay. Her writing isn't bad. I just have this feeling that she played into every girl's fantasy intentionally... But as it's commercial fiction... And of course, the no-pages limit pretty much killed Twilight too.

Prop 8 is passed huh? I don't really care if people turn to like their own gender but at the same time I have that itchy sensation that it will be so wrong for my kids to grow up wondering, "Uhm....should I like a guy or a girl?" Yeah...I don't care about the whole "true love" thing but certaintly I am a bit sour to how people like to twist the way things are in life around and incorporate that into human rights and freedom. Sure, be free.

About Twilight....I never give that book/movie a chance but I guess it's decent since I know a lot of people who like it. My room mate is in love with it and because she tells me the basic storyline...it turns me off.

If this offends anyone...you catch me on a bad time.

yeahhh. i personally don't read twilight books... the whole supernatural/fantasy genre isn't really my thing. I mean, I never read past the first harry potter book. but most of the people i know love the series. they all say its a great story, but stephanie meyer is a crappy writer.

i dont get why everyone got all worked up over prop8. i mean...people against it were all for "equal rights" but the LGBT community can have domestic partnerships. and a domestic partnership gives a couple all the same rights a married couple has...but whatever.

@gail(#25), i saw that episode of CSI the other night! well, i mean, i saw the first few minutes, up until some guy got shot and some lady was talking to the policemen in korean...and they were like, owtf. then i changed the channel. buuuuuut. i'm not korean. and plus... i didnt see the ending. so yeah...

    Clapyourhands...

It's the IDEA that's important. Why should you have to call your relationship a domestic partnership when it's really a marriage? If there's no difference, why can't we just call it that? Something about gay people being forced to call their relationships something else puts them as a second class citizen, and that just doesn't sit right with me.

Actually, clapyourhands, sayYEAH!, domestic partnership is not the same thing as marriage; marriage provides 1,400 economic and legal benefits that are not given to domestic partnership. There’s more benefits for civil unions than domestic partnerships but it’s still not at the same level. Separate but equal doesn’t always mean equal.

@gallivanter, i can understand what you mean, kind of. but to get really technical, a domestic partnership affords the same rights, protections, and benefits, and shall be subject to the same responsibilities, obligations, and duties under law. You still follow common law and everything...the only difference between it and a "marriage" is (for the most part) the religious aspect. Even if gay 'marriage' were legal in California, these are still marriages that would largely be lacking the religious aspect, so in essence it's exactly the same thing. Objectively, it's sad that using a different word upsets so many. You say "second class citizen" but that's really a mater of opinion. Because words are just letters strung together, and they only have as much meaning as we give them. (But yeah...I'm not gonna act like I'm so naive to not understand that society places different connotations on different words. I fully understand that...believe me. I do.)

    Required fields are marked *

clapyourhandsayYEAH, actually, "to get really technical" about it, domestic partnerships and civil unions do NOT provide the same protections under law that straight marriages do. You're right that the sociological connotation of not allowing gay couples to be called "married" is a blow unto itself, but it's wrong to say that it's only a "matter of opinion" that marriage prohibition makes gay people second-class citizens.

Marriage isn't only about calling someone your spouse; under law, it provides certain protections, including but not limited to health coverage, inheritance law, tax breaks, social security tax benefits, bereavement leave, pension claims, medical decision authority, etc. Gay couples are not afforded the same number of rights, some of which differ state to state and some of which are federal, so prohibiting gay marriage after previously allowing it (as in the case of California) means that the government has effectively TAKEN AWAY RIGHTS that people formerly had. That is unconstitutional.

(sorry for having to post again, I wouldve edited my post but my internet disconnected and when I reopened it, I no longer had the option. [: )

@abigail, I'm not gonna lie, I'm really just some (self-labeled) stupid 16year old girl, and I will admit that half the time I dont fully know what I'm talking about, because my opinions are based on what I've been told in class and stuff. Call me flippant or an ignorant instigator, but I don't really care enough to look up information before I post my opinions, which, again, are based on what I've been told. (Although, I do realize that you can't believe everything you hear). I actually did know that acivil union isnt the same as a domestic partnership, and that there is differentiation between the two. From what I know, same sex couples can be in a civil union, which is (from a legal perspective) more or less a marriage. (I say legal perspective only because it lacks the religious aspect of marriage, which is what many advocates for prop 8 wished to preserve.)

I don't think that separate but equal is at all equal. I wonder how it'd go down if it were tried in california's supreme court. like...would it win and the proposition be overturned and the state constitution ammended? or would they keep the proposition intact? because i mean...its supreme court law that seperate is inherently unequal...deng. i should ask my government teacher. [:

and jesus fucking christ, sandy, I'm only stating my opinion. i'm sorry if people dont agree with me, but when i was saying "to get technical" i was actually quoting directly from california state law. sorry i didnt put quotation marks and cite my source, i didnt know i was writing a research paper. go ahead and read the Family Code, section 297-297.5 of the california legislature if you want to know what I'm basing myself on. I only know what I've learned and read in class. I'm not gonna lie, I don't care too much about all this, so I don't do much outside research. I don't want to argue with people, especially over the internet with a bunch of people I don't know and will likely never meet, because I find it kind of pathetic and time wasting. So from here on out, say whatever you want about my opinions, but I respectfully withdraw from making any further comments. peace out.

I was raised between Brea and Yorba Linda, and my parents still live between there. Literally, my parents live right where the two fires would meet if it had gotten worse. From outside their window, everything was red on the horizon. I have old school friends who went to Yorba Linda and Brea O'Linda and Canyon, and now Diamond Bar could be in trouble. The scary thing is that, with this wind, the fire can jump anywhere.
