Sending off East of Eden

With East of Eden finally heading to its close this week — Tuesday will broadcast its final episode — the drama’s stars Song Seung-heon and Yeon Jung-hoon gave a closing press conference on the afternoon of Monday, March 9, at Seoul’s Lotte Hotel.

Since I haven’t been covering this drama in detail, you can consider this your East of Eden Open Thread — which means, feel free to comment on anything/everything Eden-related. (I’d done a similar open thread when Tazza ended, although I forgot to keep doing these when other dramas wrapped.)

SONG OF THE DAY

East of Eden OST – “Crazy Woman” by Kim Yeon-ji [ Download ]

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Song Seung-heon said that he’d like to try a villain role at some point. As for his character, he admits that the role didn’t show that much range or change, and that “I felt my own limitations.” He recalls feeling a strong impact when watching Choi Min-shik acting in Oldboy, “that when I look back at myself wondering whether I could take on a role like that too, I feel a little embarrassed.” Song feels he’s gotten better at understanding and analyzing his characters, “but I’m still lacking in how I express that.”

(Perhaps the uproar over his shared MBC Daesang award embarrassed him too, because he has said that he doesn’t think he deserved it, either.)

Meanwhile, Yeon Jung-hoon admits that after living as his Dong-wook character for so long, “My throat hurts a lot from all the crying and shouting.” (LOL.) He hasn’t lined up a new project yet, but says, “For my next project, I’d like to leave Lee Dong-wook behind and take on a light, sweet love story.” (Perhaps with wifey Han Ga-in, maybe? That could be cute.)

Regarding some of the harsh criticism leveled at East of Eden, Song admitted, “It’s true that there was some sharp criticism for the flawed parts. Some people pointed out it was boring, while others called it stylized new wave drama, but I think we were able to express the essence of love.”

Song also admits, “It would be a lie to say I wasn’t aware of the ratings numbers. We had gotten higher-than-average numbers, but in the latter part, they went down. I felt myself that the bloodline dispute got too drawn out.” About timeslot rival Boys Before Flowers, Song said, “It’s based on a famous original manga, and I think the rookie actors took on their roles wonderfully. However, we were diligently working on our own filming, so I don’t think it was that much on our minds.”

Monday’s episode of East of Eden was pre-empted for a baseball game, so Tuesday will actually air both the 55th and 56th episodes.

There must be a reason why LYH is always in some good/big projects with famous lead actors, don’t you think? I’ve been wondering about her for awhile. Hate to say this but she’s the weakest link in all of them. (Not to mention, most of them flopped). Esp that movie of her and Kang Dong Won and Hyun Bin. They have no chemistry whatsoever. I don’t find her pretty nor charismatic, and her acting is mediocre at best. She’s cute, and so other young actresses. Im Yoona probably already surpassed her and she’s even younger, prettier and her crying scene is also more convincing. I’m not LDH or Yoona fan. I started watching EOE because the all-star cast made the drama very interesting at the beginning. If LYH fans continue to accuse everyone who criticized LYH as a LDH fan, so I guess LDH has sooo many fans?? I didn't know that she's that popular. No, I’m a fan of the guys she paired with, so I’m kind of familiar to LYH and her acting. Although I'm not a LDH fan, but the fact that SSH preferred the pairing with LYH instead of somewhat proven actress, LDH, really gave me a bad taste, and it's still stick in my tongue, and of course he's going way down on my list. hehe. (Let's GO Kim Bum!!! ) Just my 2 cents though, and you don’t have to agree with me. Peace.

I really liked and enjoy the drama at the beginning but then towards the middle to the end was just lagging and it started to get boring...

@29: Spade: I think what people observed, mean and said is HER ACTING and not HER CHARACTER in EOE. You said, you like her character, then we are happy for you since its not about her character that we are discussing but her acting.

LYH, is cute but she is a below mediocre in acting and I'm not even LDH fans to be frank. Being as objective as we can that's the truth.

To be smart, just be like SSH. Everyone knows that's he is not a super actor and what make he is more respected despite the known facts is he admit that he didn't express expression well, and still lots way to go, is wise saying.

Those who enjoyed EOE then its a memorable drama for me for whatever reoson, LYH and SSH pairing etc.

For us who didnt enjoyed it, we have a strong and solid reoson/

I love BELLEZA saying when she/he write:-

"To a degree, both BBF (which perhaps has more problems than EOE) and EOE are critic proof for me. You either accept the show for what it is or you don’t. And if you didn’t, the show must have been a painful experience."

EOE feel the same as BBF. I don't like both since both have a weak and inconsistent writing BUT I do love to read reviews and recaps about one of them.

both SSH & LYH are okay actors not that good, at least they know it & can improve. HJH & PHJ & YYJ were great. i liked it when Dong Wook would scream "hyung". the story dragged a lot, i'm around ep 40 something, i was not a fan of Dong Chul & Young Ran, their story/acting was not believable. i liked the older characters better than theirs. i think some people were taken by SSH's good looks & kind of forgot the acting wasn't that great. i don't like how there was so much hype but then it proved to be disappointing. it could have been so much better.

Wow, Its actually going to be over? I tried to watch it and got to it halfway.. around ep 35 or so? and Couldn't keep up because the story got long, I'm still debating whether I should finish. Plus, the stars are easy on the eye, but Its so complicated and confusing that it really going to take me some kind of motivation to want to finish it.

Anyways.. congrats to a grand finale and to the actors, actresses and their hard work. Waiting to see what their next project will be. :D

i really like this drama. i dont think there's anything wrong with SSH and LYH acting. they seems fine to me and all my friends too. none of us ever mentioned any weakness from EoE characters coz it was a splendid drama. the actings are very emotionally right. i actually shocked reading all of this nonsense here. cant believe its already ends...

lol at YJH sore throat.. haha. i believe not only him but most of the casts as well.

i think EOE is a great drama which is really worth to watch. i love it when this drama is just so different, when the focus is not on love but family. but sure, the love storyline are good too. i love DC&YR couple and glad they finally ends together. they really deserve it, after going through all the hardship together.

the main storyline about the brothers are amazingly touching. this sure will be a drama that ill always remember.

Big clap to all the casts and crew member for the BRILLIANT drama!!!! (too bad LDH is not include.. i still think her attitude is horrible) agree with most people, this drama is something you'll always remember. wow, 56 episodes really seems like a big number, but now i asked myself, its already end??

this is one of the best drama i've ever watched!

wow, some of the comments here are really harsh .__. but yeah I had a great time reading them all LMAO
anyway, EOE... what can I say about you!! overall OK drama... and like one of the commenters here said "it could have been wrapped up in a lesser number of episodes". I think 30 or 35 episodes would have been more than enough to wrap it up IMO.
about the acting, I respect SSH for saying this frankly. I did notice that his acting was ok in this drama. He still needs lot of work to do, but he has a bit of talent in him. Regarding LYH, I think she's not of a great actress, sorry!!! and please, some of you need to realize that the world doesn't revolve around her! Not everyone who bashes her is a LDH fan LMAO that's a very lame thing to say .__.
to sort it all out, I'm NOT a LDH fan, but I see that LYH's acting here was so blah... won't say anything more than that, thank you!!!!

the ending was somehow a bitter sweet ending. There was no need for the death at all IMO, but at least all the bad guys got what they deserve.

@ the person above me, "LYH’s acting here was so blah"

nobody is saying it is always LDH's fan who criticize LYH's acting. and yes, some comments are harsh (like yours). and it was harsh on LYH.

i agree with most neutral viewers, LYH acting is not bad at all. best, maybe not. but her acting is ok like most other actress. i dont know why there are always emotions on those who claimed LYH's acting was blah and all.. i dont care they said they're PHJ's fan or somewhat. but are they sure they really are? coz i see their comments are very emotion on LYH. people really can differentiate neutral and emotion opinions...

its very entertaining to read those emotional comments will comes up with I’m NOT a LDH fan. haha.. i dont know if PHJ's fan can be very emotional to LYH when they dont have anything to do with her? and its also funny to read that same-person-repeating-his/her-point-every-10minutes-with different names...

really. its pretty entertaining :D

I think the ending is realistic and right because in real life, sometimes such thing happen to a good person in the end.Not some fantasy happy ending. Welcome to the real world. But i feel this could have the same effect with just 25 episodes.

I'm quite disappointed with the ending.... But anyway its still a good drama though. Its hard to find such a drama like this today, something new for me. I'm tired of all this love triangle thingy in kdramas and I'm glad i tried this one. The storyline is just different. Really recommend this. And as for the acting, everyone acts finely, IMO.

I know this drama had a lot of potential because even though there was a lot of criticism about the acting of Song Seung Hoon and Lee Yeon Hee, I think that it was solid enough to be a really good drama. The main thing holding me from going full into this drama was the fact that Lee Dong Chul was going to die. 1) because it's the most realistic way to end the drama, but probably not the best 2) Song Seung Hoon always dies except for in Summer Scent, but almost the same. So East of Eden got lucky that it was broadcasted at the end of last year and was able to get a hold of their awards, considering they didn't have a whole lot of competition last year and they got in a solid month before Boys Over Flowers came in. I think that the chemistry because YR and DC was pretty good and MH and his wife, so I hope that they come out together but maybe in more favorable setting?

You know..I’m thinking probably Baeksang Award committee is also LDH fan too. They seem not to like EOE too much. They didn’t give any single award to EOE despite it was the big winner at the MBC Award just few months earlier. How odd. They gave the Best New Actress Award to the 19 years old, Im Yoona, instead of the already 5-6 years experienced actress like LYH. I guess they’re bitter LDH fans Wait, I almost forgot, didn’t LDH also win the Baeksang Award’s Best New Actress when she was 19? So I think the Baeksang people are really LDH fans!!!

Just finish the final episode, I like the ending .YJH and SSH were very good at the final scene. YJH english is very good and his expression and emotion shown is very touching. You see his hatred, his pain, his anger and his sorrow and his look when he saw his brother dying in his arm. SSH is much better than in EP55. I find EP55 boring in the first half .It is from DC being betrayed that I pick up the excitement again.I wished Rebecca presence could be more and the final scene with STH is predictable but well excecuted.

I find the wedding scene too much of the same line. Seem like YR is only there for all that .In fact I was already turn off by then.Acting wise, LYH is the weakest lnk of all.She is inexperienced and I feel the role is above her capability. Maybe with a more experienced actress , the effect will be better.

Overall , I feel too much was stressed on unnecessary plots, middle part especially DC YR circle plots are very boring .It seem the PD lost the plot which is the love of 2 brothers and birth swtich. Only in the final episode, they woke up and found out the truth. The rating of 30% plus confirmed it for them.Had they stick to the main plot and not on the DC YR plots, the ratings might had push through the roof by the last episode. But No one can know now for sure....

all in all, this story is just so amazingly great. the last time i remember watching some meaningful drama was Dae Jang Geum. and that was 4 years ago!! I love it to bits: it's family story, it's love story ( even WG&KS's love story). really thumbs up to all the casts for their great job & acting..they really sure know how to make people cry..

To sum it all up, this is one of the best drama i've watched.

@ 133
Baeksang is more like a Oscar or Emy Awards in Korea! it a prestigious award ceremony! Baeksang awards is for the "most" deserving actors and shows! (i didn't say EOE or the actors behind on that show is not the best) and yes! of course East of Eden is a big winner in their own Award Show(MBC Award) EOE got most of the nominations in Baeksang Award! so i think that is enough! Every korean actor is great full to be nominated in Baeksang!

"i think the Baeksang people are really LDH fans"(what a sentiment?)
if LDH was nominated in Baeksang Awards!
as a LDH fan i don't think her character Min Hye-rin is worthy to accept Baeksang Award

you made me proud to be a "LEE DA HAE FAN"

@137 We have to remember that this is Almighty SSH's comeback drama. Thus, he is ever so glorified being superman, being a saint (ahem... casino mafia? bribery?), loyal lover, most loved character, and more. Main plot is neglected to show this. That would explain why suddenly everyone is turning 180 degrees almost instantly to emphasize his greatness. I cannot even phantom how great his influence is, almost, no, VERY scary. To be able to shift the writer's orginal focus from two switched babies into the great Hyung. To recommend someone for the role. For PD to accommodate his request and preference of his love story. Enough to write off the lead actress, and to suppress the other lead actor's character for a long time. Take note, prior to lead actress's exit, it was announced that LDW would get married. Meaning there's a DW-focused episodes. Other actors and actresses should be careful collaborating with this guy again. Who knows what he's capable of doing. He's that powerful! Maybe he owns the Production Company for EOE?

I do find a lot of of the plots doesn't make sense. Why do they keep going with his one love story when it is so boring For the whole 56 episodes, it is just chasing, running away , chasing and running away. I have never seen a more stupid love story where they have to have 4 wedding scenes. It is just crazy. The whole of EOE is just worth only about 20 episodes, the rest is just nonsense,

This is the first kdrama where I do not like the leading couple.I much prefer the rest of the casts minus the lead actor and his love. And her acting is real bad

This Drama is probably the best drama korean ever made. I had to say, i hate Kdrama but more fond of Jdrama. but somehow this drama really catches me. sure, there are plots which doesnt make sense, but i find it more in other Kdramas than this. I love the 2 main lead love interest. it was somehow presents the only happiness that DC could have after all his miserable life. The ONLY. and i'm glad that atleast before he died, he could taste his love by being married to his only happiness. I LOVE this show. and it was also a HIT in japan. Really, Kdrama producer should learn from this drama. Just a thought. but i really hope (crossing finger) there will be more dramas like this.

The 56 episodes is filled with too much inconsistent plots. Just love the young kim bum .It is him who got me glued to the drama. PHJ ,YJH ,HJH are actors of the younger generations that have shown potentials in EOE. LDH is also impressive but the PD and writer did not made use of her skill. Instead settling for two whose actings skill needs lots of improvement and her acting is very average at best. The veterans are fabulous as usual.

I wished the plots had been different and I feel It is such a waste at the end.

I think this drama is very good. agree with 144, probably one of the best kdrama since its very different with other kdrama. i just love everyone as all their presence is very meaningful to the drama except Mike and Hyerin. but yeah i also think there are too many unnecessary plots, especially Hyerin's part as she has no meaning to the drama. but it do enjoy her when she popped out her eyes when she angry..haha. and also revenge on Mike's death, i dont see its necessary.

I'd do recommend all my friends who have free times and ready for some tear jerking drama this.

Overall, the best performance is Han Ji Hye. She really could live up her character even without words. her eyes expression already tell everything out(yes, without even popping it :P). man, i just love her performance from beginning to the end.

and honestly about SSH admits his weakness in acting, i dont know where does it come from. he's just as good as any actor out there. try casting Jung Woo Sung or Kwon Sang Woo, u'll probably get the same thing. his acting is just as realistic as DC can be. and nobody ever questions about his acting before. where does this come from? really, i dont think he needs to admit it just to respect some people. same with LYH, her acting had fulfill YR character just as good as it can be. she's already been in many projects even 4 movies before EofE and nobody ever questions about her acting. I think all the cast are splendid. their acting are very promising and will make u cry a river.

Overall, this drama is really worth for watching even with 56 episodes. It is a meaningful drama which tells about sacrifices. ok, there's many other kdrama about sacrifice, what makes this drama different? well, first, his sacrifices is not only for relationship love like many other sad kdrama but included his greatest love to his family and decent father. 2nd, he sacrificed his whole life since he was small until he died. 3rd, there's no stupid-boring love triangle like u can find in hundreds other dramas. 4th, no terminal ill for the main leads. 5th, the setting. i just love the 60-70-ish setting and the props, it brings out different moods.

I find HYH has improved a lot since I first saw her in summer scent. She has really matured as an actress and she has proven it with dramatic role as JH. This is the first time I have see LYH in a series. I saw her in millionaire love,M and her latest. I tend to think she is ok in these role because they are lighter and not dramatic as in EOE. maybe that is why she is pick on a lot because the standard of acting is really very high. The role she played in most of the movies are young role. palying a matured YR might have taken its toll on her acting. To compare her with HJH, I think with experience she can also improve.maybe she need to have a look and pick her future project more carefully. EOE has put her in a not so good light when she has to stand and act next to more seasoned veterans and better actresses who have won major awards.
