Cain & Abel ends [Open Thread]

How time flies, huh? It felt like just the other day I was writing up my first impressions on the SBS revenge drama Cain & Abel, and now it’s already over. (The last episode aired Thursday, April 23.)

As with other popular shows I haven’t followed, I’m opening this up to an Open Thread, so you can discuss Cain & Abel‘s run, its ending, whatever, go wild. (Previous end-of-drama open threads: Tazza, East of Eden).

Starting next week in Cain‘s Wednesday-Thursday SBS timeslot is Kim Sun-ah‘s City Hall.

SONG OF THE DAY

Cain & Abel OST – “운명” (Fate). One of these days I’d like to see a kdrama soundtrack (particularly a thriller) NOT feature a song named “운명.” Just for a change, you know? [ Download ]

I saw bits and pieces of this drama because it randomly came on TV late at night and so I saw some of it, and it seemed rather... tense? hehe. But I only saw like maybe 10 minutes worth of a few different episodes (and not back to back to back), so I can't say that I understood what was going on other than there was a lot of tension in the air and people staring at each other with angry stares. There was a lot of angry staring in the midst of polite conversation.

Can someone say whether they liked it?

1. Good enough to watch all the way through and then possibly to buy?

2. How does it rank among dramas of its type?

***

I'm not a huge fan of revenge dramas, generally because it goes against my sensibilities ("eye for an eye and the world is blind", blah blah, etc.), but I have to say that I am beginning to fall for the daily drama Temptation of Wife (Lure of Wife). This is odd because it totally isn't my cup of tea - I have to watch it on broadcast TV rather than on DVDs (which forces me to wait between episodes), it has over a 100+ episodes (whereas I like short series), waaaaay over the top evil people, waaaaaay over the top tragic melodrama, and just totally unrealistic things happening that make you think, "why why why are you behaving that way, why isn't someone smacking sense into your head." Plus, isn't it kind of embarassing for me to watch this?

But last night again as my wife slept next to me, I quietly watched Temptation of Wife at the foot of the bed, shielding the TV so that the glow wouldn't wake my wife. It was so over the top and yet I couldnt' stop watching it ("I WILL LIVE! I WILL LIVE!" .... no words other than, I support her will to survive and I hope she kicks ass). I am officially addicted. I am still embarassed, but at this point, I just want revenge for her sake. I want revenge for her so badly that if she set a website to ask for money to help her get her revenge, I would donate money to help her succeed.

If Cain & Abel is just 10% as emotionally addictive as Temptation of Wife, I'll put Cain & Abel on my list to purchase.

I'm watching this and I like it^^
probably one of So JiSub's best performance in a drama ever....
but I've been real busy with college so I haven't caught up with the last few episodes.
cinematography-wise it's good too....and I LOVE their usage of the music to dramatize everything....^^~
I wouldn't say tt the story is the most original, but the execution is good....
Overall, I really like the drama^^

This show is a must watch. Its definitely good, none of the main characters are perfect, yet it has all the elements needed for a good drama and has/is keeping me addicted to the end. Its much much better than EOE and BOF, that is a fact. I love this show and will miss it when it ends. Now I have to find a show just as good as this to replace for Wednesday and Thursday watch. You can either download to your PCs, subs courtesy of WITHS2 or watch it on viikii.net. Believe when I say its a fantastic drama and to me the best one for the first quarter 2009 (April). For the rest of the year, I'll wait to give a verdict. It also introduced me to SJS who I did not know about, I like what he has done and will check out his previous work. HJ - Young Ji, I am familiar with in Resurrection - excellent work and Yi San - good stuff, the others I did not know much about. So for those who are hesitant - watch it, it starts a bit on the slow side but after ep 4, it really gets addictive from then on.

@7, chasen8888-

What have you seen that you can compare it to, favorably? What other shows have you watched that you like a lot and would recommend? What did you mean when you said, "For the rest of the year, I’ll wait to give a verdict."?

@Samsooki: Ahahahah! You're definitely not the only one! Here's another "Temptation of Wife" addict ^o^ It got me sooo hooked! Though the series went down a couple of notches for me with the extension, resulting in some story development that I didn't care much for... (of course I dunno if that had been initially planned or if it was thrown in at the last minute with the extension). Ah, well~ It's ending soon and I hope it'll give me the satisfaction I crave!

Anyway, I never did get anywhere near that addicted to Cain and Abel. That show was never much about revenge and I was annoyed at most of the characters there... dunno... for me there was just something missing from the show. I'd much rather rewatch "Resurrection" <3 <3 <3 That was a totally awesome revenge show (despite an annoying character)! Cain and Abel can't compare if you ask me. Though So Ji Sub is a joy to watch, it's just not enough~ I hope he'll act in another and better drama soon.

@9, Vis -

I take it you also want Eun Jae to get her revenge?

Generally, I'm not big on revenge because it's kind of childish, no? Will destroying another person get back the years you lost, or repair your broken heart? No! Why not just move on and be the bigger person, try to make happiness out of the remainder of your life? Don't expend even a single minute or an ounce of energy wasting it on the past and in a futile effort to get justice when justice against complete tools is impossible.

But every good rule has an exception. And this is that exception. Do you think you'll be satisfied if Gyobin says, "Nan jal mot hessuh. Mi an." (Literally, "oops, my bad, sorry"). Hellz no. I want blood, baby. I want Eun Jae to smile just a small brief smile as she stands over the obliterated souls of Gyobin and Aeri and then walk off happy.

I probably shouldn't get worked up like this... lol.

Ugh I'm so behind on this (still on 13) so I have yet to read the comments above mine. I'm just gonna say that I'm watching purely for So Ji Sub and nothing else. The writing (as lots are probably going to mention) doesn't make any sense. The acting is pretty good overall, but all the characters except for Cho-in are just so damn annoying. Every time I finish an episode I breathe a huge sigh of relief and mentally pat myself on the back for being able to sit through an hour of it. I know that's not the way to watch dramas, but I feel an obligation to finish my favorite actor's comeback drama.

Haha.. I watched the first 3 or 4 ep (up to he lost his memory), then I stopped becoz' of I saw negative critics (politically, which I care less). I just didnt want to see how they torture So Ji-sub :D

After they all went back to Korea, I watched it again (ep 7?) Well, there is no surprise at all about the story. You can pretty much guess what happen next. The only thing that keep me watching it is So Ji-sub. It is no doubt he did a good job on all the emotional scenes. What I love are all the cute stuffs he did in the drama. With the bored storyline, that is just like a dessert that suprise you once in a while.

I'm dying to watch the last 2 episodes!!! And hopefully the subs will be out soon! I enjoy the show a lot! It was a little boring the first episodes and then the pace and story picked right up. SJS is excellent in it and the evil brother makes you hate him just at the site of him! Great job everyone in the cast!!

@ SAMSOOKI AND VIS:

I HAVENT BEEN FOLLOWING THIS DRAMA RELIGIOUSLY...AFTER A FEW EPISODES, I KINDA MOVED TO ANOTHER DRAMA... AM PLANNING ON WATCHING IT AGAIN THOUGH.

AM QUITE NEUTRAL ON THE "REVENGE" THEME. I DONT MIND THIS KIND OF THEME, AS LONG AS IT HAS AN INTERESTING PLOT THAT WILL KEEP ME GLUED TO THE SCREEN. I DIDNT FOLLOW THE CAIN AND ABEL DRAMA(THE FIRST FEW EPS WERE A BIT OF A...SNOOZE) BUT I HAVE TO SAY, I LIKED THE DRAMAS "THE DEVIL" AND "RESURRECTION"

I MEAN, JOO JI HOON'S ACTING WASNT REALLY THAT GREAT IN "THE DEVIL" BUT HOW THE PLOT MOVED ALONG WAS WHAT MADE ME WATCHED IT. WHO THE VILLAIN WAS BECAME OBVIOUS AFTER THE FEW EPS BUT THE PLOT STILL MADE ME HOPE THAT I WOULD BE WRONG! AHHHHH...IT WAS EXCRUCIATINGLY EXASPERATING AND HEARTBREAKING..INA GOOD WAY!....^-^ RESURRECTION'S PLOT WAS ALSO GOOD...

UHH!! I haven't watch this week's episodes but I really loved this drama. After Worlds Within I really didn't get into any dramas until this one started and I have to say it was pretty good and intense. It did get a little cliche at times but hey what drama doesn't. At least I have Story of a Man to watch now that this one ended.

I just finished watching the last episode of Cain and Abel and I'm glad it's finally over. It had a promising beginning and then quickly turned into a mess. I was hoping it would redeem itself with the final episode, but didn't happen. This drama was so ridiculous that I thought I was going to see Rod Serling at the end and say, "only in the twilight zone."

Weren't we all hoping for justice in the form of arrest and jail time for the evil mother and son duo? But no... Sun Woo (Cain) gets his surgery from Cho In (Abel) and wakes up to enjoy dates with So Yeon. No jail time for Sun Woo who tried to kill four people and succeeded only in killing two. I almost forgot he tried to make his dad into a vegetable with surgery.

The evil murderess mother steps down from her director position from the hospital and gives a speech to Cho In telling him that she is just a woman who acted out of jealousy; she was jealous of the friendship between her husband and Cho In's mother. She couldn't say she was a nutcase but had to bring down the female sex down with her. Because you know, when women get jealous. Watch out! They will fix your brakes and take out your "lover". No jail time for the mother who killed two people, ordered kidnapping of one person and tried to kill her husband by not calling for an ambulance right away when he had a stroke.

The drama ends with the So Yeon (owner of a faulty heart and brain) and Sun Woo couple and the Young Ji and Cho In couple standing close together overlooking a lake. Then you get flashbacks of the earlier episodes with Cho In's stupid monologue about good and bad memories. I guess this is to tie it back to the first episode where Cho In is dying in the desert and talks about his memories slipping from him like grains of sand. He talks about how the deepest hurts come from the ones closest to you. How only people can heal the hurt caused by other people.

I thought Cho In was supposed to be the Abel character in the Bible, but the writers decided he's Jesus at the end. Dude, not all hurts can be healed and forgiven unless you're God. Drama ends by Cho In saying, "Salvation for man comes from man alone." To put it in gender neutral form, is it something like "we are each other's salvation?" This statement can be very controversial in a country with a more than a third of its people identifying themselves as Christians, but yeah I've written too much.

holes in the storyline that can bury the scriptwriter and PD....

I haven't even started on this yet. I'm waiting for all the subs to be released and then do a marathon at once. But from what I read so far, there's "revenge", and also "memory lost? It sounds too typical in a Kdrama. Why there's always a memory lost in 8 out 10 Kdramas, while in reality, I can't even find one person that I can remotely relate to that suffers this trauma.

I watched half of the drama and then stopped. I can't feel the chemistry of the main couple - ji sub and ji min, and basically they twisted the character of So Yeon, she's coming back to the big brother and gave up love with Cho In so quickly like she used to date Cho In only for a subtitute. Anyway, I can't feel even I pushed my self to the half of the drama and I just quit. I am more hooked with Hateful but Once again, and Queen of housewives.

Cain and Abel for me started out sort of slow. I have to tell you all that it is worth watching. So Ji Sub's acting ability amazes me to no end - and so as the other actor (his brother - sorry dont know his name). Joicy - i know you said that you cant find the chemistry between Cho In and Young Ji but later on in the show - you will see that Cho In warms up to her. You will find your self cheering for Cho In and even feel sorry for the brother later (even though he's Satan brought to life). OMG - I love this show. I'm glad I gave it a chance - i really was going to give up watching it because I really thought it was going ever so sllllloooooowww.

@ SAMSOOKI n others
Cain and Abel is a rare one. It has alot of flaws; a lot of loopholes in the plot etc. But for some weird reason is somewhat addicting. I normally don't watch revenge/over the top dramatic dramas and for the past year i have pretty much dropped every drama that I've started watching. I don't hesitate when i don't like something i drop it. However, Cain and Abel is probably the first of the year that i just feel like its a tinsy bit worth my time. In short i think is worth your time if you maybe catch it on tv later on or if you download the torrents, probably not worth the money to buy it.( Just to give you an idea of my taste in dramas , i loved the time btw dog and wolf and disliked East of Eden).

@8 Samsooki. I am referring to dramas that has been shown in the latter part of 2008 to early 2009 (Jan - April) that I have watched which are - Terroir, Kingdom of the Winds, East of Eden, Boys over Flowers, to name a few. The verdict would be in relation to best drama for 2009.

What shows that I have watched and liked. My tastes run towards contemporary, hospital and historical dramas. The following shows I have watched and liked, not in any specific order:-

1. 1%percent of anything - it introduced me to kdrama
2. Jumong- introduced to Song Il Kook and love for historical dramas. My favorite historical, its been rewatched a lot for me.
3. Coffee Prince - loved it, very good show.
4. Return of Iljimae - the show that not much people were watching but its good stuff
5. Yi San - another good drama, dragged at some points though, but still good
6. Resurrection - the premise had me from hello. Its a must watch
7. Kingdom of the Winds - SIK is just good in this
8. Seodong Song - another fun historical
9. New Heart - hospital drama
10. Surgeon Bong Dal Hee - it was an intro to hospital dramas for me

If the show does not hold my interest after a maximum of 4 episodes, its dropped and a few have fallen into that category. eg. for 2009 its Hateful but Once Again ep 1, Princess Ja Myung Go ep 1. Also if after watching the show for a while and the premise/story goes in my opinion into a ridiculous or unfavorable turn its dropped e.g. East of Eden - the transformation of Dong Wook after episode I think 44 (thats ridiculous, makes no sense) and You are my Destiny - that mother was psychotic, the heroine too martyrish for my taste after all the things that she went through. From what I have read at soompi.com it got more ridiculous and stupid later on.

What I'm watching so far and liked :

1. Cain and Abel - I love this show and will probably rewatch it many times
2. Slingshot / A Man's Story - dramabeans is recapping this one. The show very few are watching and should watch. I like what I've read and watched so far.
Boys over Flowers was a guilty pleasure to me, but if I see it again, it would be on my wait till I have time to watch list.

Therefore I need the lists of shows that I should be watching and not doing so for 2009. Any recommendations, people let me know.

As for Temptation of Wife from what I understand, "rape" and marrying the rapist because he is from a powerful family was part of the premise of the show. Its the main reason why I do not watch it and will not do so in the future. Though they make it a part of the drama to tell a story where the victim "wins". For once I would like to watch a show whereby he gets punished from the beginning, go to jail, his own family punishes him, the victim takes control of her life take some self defense class, find true love etc . The victim should not have to marry her rapist even if she becomes pregnant, that to me is TOTALLY WRONG, WHY SHOULD SHE BE PUNISHED, MADE TO SUFFER MORE. Off topic, sorry about that.

As for movies, I have not watched much. Did enjoy Sassy Girl and Divine Weapon. Will check out Antique Bakery.

Sorry took so long to reply, net has been acting up lately.

*LOL* Thank you. Now I don't have to watch the last few episodes. I saw up to episode 15 and that's only because I find both male leads extremely attractive. I love hawk noses. So sexy.

That ending is a complete snore. If you had said everyone dies in a bloody mess then I would have kept watching. I thought it was supposed to be a revenge drama. I want to see vengeance, not the high road. Bleh.

I haven't watched the final episode yet but I have to say that I am somewhat disappointed with the quality of this drama. The only thing getting me to watch this to the end is SJS and HJM, two of my favorite actors. This drama had a lot fo potential to be a awesome drama like Resurrection (one of the best revenge drama). The acting was great but the storyline does did not work for me. I can buy the fact that SJS almost dies in China, has amnesia, wants revenge, etc...but I don't understand the older brother. I think the writing lacks creativity and is somewhat emotionally manipulative (this is true of Temptation of Wife). The writer wants us to believe some ridiculous things. Especially the latter half, all I could say is "come on, give me a break!" I am waiting to see the last episode and hoping the writer will redeem him/herself but I highly doubt it.

For SJS fans, you have to see I'm Sorry, I Love You. Great acting by SJS and much better writing.

@28, day -

Thanks for your comments. Cain & Abel looks to be right in the grey zone, where I am not sure whether it is worth buying.

@29, chasen8888 -

That's really an interesting list of dramas. It's like you cherry-picked only those which you want to watch based on the content, and not necessarily those recommended by other people who say, "omgz that was awesome. <3 " It also seems like you skipped entire years of dramas for more recent stuff.

As for Temptation of Wife (TOW) and the initial reason why Eun Jae and Gyobin got married in the first place, I don't know exactly what happened because I just started watching after Eun Jae was forced to get a divorce from Gyobin to save her brother from jail, so I don't know how they got together or what exactly happened for the 7 years they were married. The oft-copied summary says that Eun Jae got drunk and Gyobin took advantage of her, whatever that means.

My feeling, after watching bits and pieces though, was the Gyobin actually did really care for Eun Jae (he still has pictures of them when they both were happy), but was tricked / forced / seduced / blackmailed / bribed into being with Aeri. And because Gyobin is a tool and a weak man, a coward, a loser, and basically, a man without spine or morals, he has turned to the dark side which is Aeri.

I am not sure if it is the drama producers (and writers) job to ensure that Korean cultural biases and injustices in the general mode of thinking are changed for the better, although I myself would think that would be an admirable thing.

So far as I can see, TOW is not a drama to see that social justice or any kind of justice is done. It is a just a string of juicy tabloid-ish nasty events broadcast into the privacy of people's homes, so juicy and so salacious and foul in fact that people cannot avert their eyes - a guilty pleasure of watching things that hopefully they will never see or experience in their lifetime. They watch (and, me too, I watch) with one eye on the TV and one eye checking to see if anyone is watching them watch. TOW taps into the Roman gladiator spectator mentality - we want to see the blood, we want to see the "sport."

I think that people understand that it is just a dark fantasy drama, and that the actions of Gyobin are reprehensible by any standard of morality, and that Gyobin and Aeri should be punished for their misdeeds. They (and I) watch to get a feel for what we would do if we were faced with so much evil, locked into a patriarchal and socially stratified society where the rich and the male get away with even the worst of deeds, while the poor and the female tend to suffer despite obvious injustice.

Anyway, it is a train wreck, and I am watching it, having only caught it after all the injustices have been done. Now it is payback time, and I hope Eun Jae wipes the floor with Gyobin and Aeri.

****

Antique Bakery is both light and dark at the same time, funny and sad, extremely touching and sort of uncomfortable-making at the same time. I don't know if you will like it, but I think you will find that it is worth watching.

And I think Joo Ji Hoon was just spiffy in this movie. He was rather bland in the drama Goong, but he acted his socks off in Antique Bakery. JJH was so surprising in this movie - perhaps I think it is surprising because it is me who didn't know how talented JJH is.

@32 Samsooki - in reference to this statement

"That’s really an interesting list of dramas. It’s like you cherry-picked only those which you want to watch based on the content, and not necessarily those recommended by other people who say, “omgz that was awesome. <3 ” It also seems like you skipped entire years of dramas for more recent stuff. "

You are correct. Other people's recommendations do count for me but its not the main factor, if its recommended I'll try it, but the premise and the drama has to hold my interest, what they may like and I like are sometimes different as the saying goes - people's taste differ. However, I have to say that javabeans (kudos to you) recommendation for me does hold a lot of weight, I usually start from there and decide later on the rest.

I am a 1 1/2 year newbie to kdramas, which explains the recent stuff. However, if I was to start my history into Asian shows it goes like this.

1. Started watching anime - approx 4 years ago. Still watch it but at a much much lesser extent.
2. Decided to watch a jdrama from crunchyroll.com for the fun of it- liked it and stayed with it. However seeing the other dramas on the site piqued my curiosity. Therefore, I tried twdramas, liked it and added it to my watch portfolio and then 1 % of anything my kdrama intro 1 1/2 years and running.
3. My addiction came through Resurrection and Jumong those shows for me personally put kdrama on the must watch list, I have watched many, but the 10 listed to me were the most memorable in my kdrama watching history, young as it may be.

For asian dramas that I have watched and continue to watch. They are ranked as follows:-1 kdrama it has everything and more especially in terms of variety and strong characters (though my pet peeve with them is that most times the consequences do not usually fit the crime especially in terms of justice, plus I cannot believe people are that that forgiving given the amount of sins doled unto them especially to the one who did them wrong) its like they leave it to karma which as we all know is a -itch (the karma to me given is not that -itchy), 2 - twdrama for light and very silly stuff; believe me when I say they have a lot of that, 3- jdrama is next and 4 finally wuxia (Chinese dramas) for the action.

With the introduction of viikii.net, there is a strong likelihood of me exploring other dramas from different countries, so my watch plate will be overflowing. Looking forward to watching the end of Cain and Abel. Hopefully the net behaves itself.

AWESOME

NOTE: to the person who was questioning why the step mom and brother did not go to prison: (just a brief answer) you need someone to bring a case against them and the police is willing to open up the cold case (if it is a cold case)

One of the best comeback other than Jang Hyuk in Thank You & Ji Sung in New Heart. love the chemistry between SJS & HJM. the bro SHJ also played the character very well but CJA is just the weakest among these three gems.

I'm always a fan on the revenge stuff / dark drama's. other drama's i've watch with the same theme are Resurrection, Green Rose, All In, A Time To Kill, I'm Sorry I Love You. I could say Cain & Abel are in between Resurrection & Green Rose, but could not compete with All In. I Love That Drama Soooo Much> LBH Rocks my Sock!

SJS character in MISA is much more depths with emotions than in C&A but i prefer HJM character in Cain & Abel than in Resurrection. maybe it's because C&A ending is much more clearer happy ending than Resurrection where I was quite dissapointed.

Overall a satisfying drama and a must collection for me.

the ending.... was a bit unsatisfying for me. I would have liked to see what happened to cho-in's father. They just kind of make him the savior for everyone and the angel that forgives, which is great and all, just not enough.
plus i don't understand why they couldn't at least let sunwoo start to move a little or at least say something to cho-in, something that would let the audience feel sympathetic to him or at the least bit, feel pity. and the mom kind of just disappears. I would've liked to see that the mother comes back a completely different person and that her and cho-in slowly develop a good relationship.
i did like the way that they kind of gave peace to sunwoo through the father's letter though. it was something i was waiting for all throughout the drama.
it would have been great if the writer took a sure position: either YES even after so many endeavors, brothers are still brothers; or NO when it comes to this much pain, forgiveness is out of the question. but she kinda took the middle road T.T

anyway, i skipped the whole middle because it was so frustrating. i picked it up again from episode 14 when i saw my mom watching it. it looked like it was getting interesting so i started watching. it was worth it i guess, especially since i think this is the best acting i've ever seen from so jisub so far. han ji min was great with her north korean accent. it was amazing. choi jungan was alright...lol shin hyun joon...the last scene, where he can't move yet he cries so much, that was...simply DIVINE. it was great acting. i was really surprised. and the scenes where he starts having seizures and stuff, that was great too :) overall, a pretty good drama.

I’m also a bit disappointed in the ending as well. However, I’m more confused about the surgery situation. It was said cho-in left some tumor behind and he also said this is the first time he’s going against his fathers will. does that mean he purposely didn’t try his best and meant to make his brother turn out like his dad? I feel like that isn’t his character at all..he’s someone who saves people regardless of revenge or not. If anything, he would be one to not do the surgery at all than do it and not try his best. Can anyone enlighten me on this situation? It’s driving me crazy because I haven’t been able to find any discussion about this part

It was an okay drama for the genre it's in. However, every episode felt repetitive, like there was no new revelation. The relationship dynamics were stiff to me, and I found myself wanting more from them. As for the plot itself, it's nothing new. I'd probably recommend this drama to someone who liked "All In" or "Lobbyist". I felt like the drama could've been wrapped up within 16 episodes rather than the 20 that it took. I honestly think So Ji-sub has more potential, and I've seen him act MUCH better than he did in this drama.

Although I hate revenge theme and Cain & Abel ending is unsatisfiable but after all I love this movie,
Great acting and lovely couple CI vs YJ . I like the way CI show his love to YJ, soooooooo cute.
To me, It is worthy to see C&A than BOF (^*^)

I'm lackadaisical about the ending but I'm glad that it ended on a happy note with closures. I enjoyed watching the relationship/chemistry between Han Ji Min and So Ji Sub, which I find to be light, but heartfelt--he the tormented soul, and she is one that provides him with comfort and love as well as space to mend his own wounds. Their relationship echoes the saying, "If you love something, let it go. If it loves you, it will come back".

Throughout the drama, I was particularly intrigued by Shin Hyun Joon's acting skills. I think So Ji Sub was at his best in I'm Sorry I Love You, but Shin Hyun Joon plays the role of the twisted brother so well in this particular drama. I hate his character but I also pitied him. So Ji Sub did a great job, same with Han Ji Min (though I'm not Korean or speak the language, I am highly impressed to hear the change in diction so I assumed that her North Korean accent is very good; I also like the fact that she wore no makeup throughout this drama). Chae Jung Ahn, on the other hand, disappoints me a bit. Her character had no range, or at least she did not portray any range in emotions.

a must watch!!!! One of the best drama i've watch but still MISA will always be the best kdrama of all kdramas!!! Great acting by so ji sub but i must agree to all those who commented that jisub's acting in MISA is really his best among all those dramas he made!!!! But I just love the chemistry between jisub and hanjimin is CABEL... i can't help but smile whenever im watching their scenes together..... great portrayal of character by hanjimin.... you can see that she really studied a lot to portray the innocent, N. Korean/ chinese/japanese tour guide oh young ji..... all in all.... highy recommended series... i 'll definitely buy a copy when it's out on DVD!!!

Just started to watch this drama and so far I'm enjoying it . Not the best and certainly not the worst I've seen.
As I've watched quite a few dramas now, my favourites list is headed up by "Coffee Princes"(the first I saw and the one that hooked me onto Kdrama) and my bombs list is headed up by "Boys before flowers". So I'm going to keep watching dramas, both could topple from there positions!

You know what? I have gone through 12 epis of this drama in 3 hours. The fast forward button was extremely useful in this case and guess what? The print "FF" on the button has rubbed off.

After reading so many suggestions to give this drama at least 5 to 8 epis before the magic kicks in, I fell for it. So I did and see what happens to my FF button?

It did pick up after ep 8 but after 12 epis, I must agree with @13 Ishida. It's BEYOND ridiculous. Overall acting was just ok. SJS's torture scenes were done to death! Maybe that's why his acting stood out above others. Also, I have not figured out why ALL the lead actors/actress have one of following : brain tumor, amnesia, heart disease, appendicitis.

@ Samsooki,

I have no way of comparing to dramas of similar genre bcoz I, too, am not a fan of revenge plots.

However, I can only find 3 reasons why you would like to buy this box set for keeps.

1. You don't know or don't care for the geography of China.
eg. SJS says he is going to Fujian province. But they shoot the scene where the round houses are characteristic of another province.
And again, SJS was supposed to have been kidnapped in Fujian, but somehow ended up in with a scene in Beijing and the kidnappers said to drive to the desert. Nearest desert would be the Gobi desert. Fujian to Beijing is probably 2000 miles apart. Beijing to the edge of Gobi desert is about 800 miles. Driving around these distances, SJS's blood still remained red and moist. And So Hyun looked for SJS in Shanghai (sign at the train station)? She plastered his pix all over and SJS saw it.

2. You don't mind senseless logic.
Eg. SJS and HJM scene :
SJS : I will go into the kitchen to whip up something for you to eat.
HJM : My mother says for a man to enter the kitchen, his "family jewels" will fall off!
I hope someone verifies my interpretation.

3. Getting a refund for your box set is one of your favorite pastimes.

If you like SJS and revenge plots to bits, forget what I have just said.

I find Queen of Housewives (female revenge - b!tchiness?!) a whole lot more entertaining. I can see why JB is recapping QoH and don't want to be caught dead recapping C&A. While waiting for the next epis of QoH, I will start Story of a Man.

@omo:

Hahaha! It's a good thing I don't know my Chinese geography. I did wonder where that desert came from though....it looked pretty, but seemed to appear out of nowhere.

@omo, I can see why you wore out the FF button ;)

I agree part of storyline is ridiculous so much so that I want to bury the scriptwriter alive, but,
1.those round houses call "tulou", the one filmed is in Fujian province. Some SJS's
Chinese fans can verify this. But its location is nowhere close to any foreign country that Choin/SJS could easily go across by walking in the woods...

2. Choin/SJS was kidnapped at Zhu Jia jiao, close to Shanghai, not Beijing.
Still, desert is very far away. I don't know what the scriptwriter was thinking when he/she wrote the story!

3. The prison in the story where SJS was tortured is intended in Shanghai area,
but actually filmed in Korea.
