Joo Ji-hoon busted for drug use

Whoa. Five people have been busted for drug trafficking, selling, and/or use — and three of them celebrities.

Most shocking is the involvement of popular actor Joo Ji-hoon, of movies Antique Bakery and The Naked Kitchen.

A representative from the Seoul police’s drug investigation department told reporters on April 26, “Joo Ji-hoon was investigated and admitted to drug use.” Joo reportedly bought the drugs — which include Ecstasy and Ketamine — from a fellow celebrity. Two non-celebrity individuals were booked for drug use along with Joo, but the three were not jailed. Police have filed for arrest warrants for the traffickers, movie actress Yoon Seol-hee and model Yeh Hak-young.

According to the police, Yoon is suspected of having received approximately 100 million won ($75,000) from Yeh and others between August 2007 through December 2008. She allegedly traveled from Japan fourteen times to purchase, smuggle, and sell Ecstasy and Ketamine. (Yeh supposedly accompanied her several times.) The drugs had been smuggled into the country by concealing them in underclothes worn by Yoon.

Joo Ji-hoon is thought to have used the drugs on two occasions along with the other reported individuals, at a Kangnam club and at home.

The 26-year-old Joo Ji-hoon shot to fame after acting the lead role of the prince in the incredibly popular teen drama Goong (Princess Hours) in 2006, which he followed with the dark thriller drama Devil in 2007. Most recently, he took the lead in the manga-adapted film Antique Bakery and the offbeat romance The Naked Kitchen.

YIIIIKES. I’m guessing he’ll be dropped from the Tokyo Tower remake now — if not prevented from acting altogether. Drug use — particularly in South Korea — is a big, big deal, and potentially career-killing stuff. Don’t do drugs, folks!

UPDATE

Joo Ji-hoon, Yoon Seol-hee, Yeh Hak-young

There isn’t much information available on Yoon Seol-hee, other than that she is an actress who was born in 1982.

Yeh Hak-young, on the other hand, was born in 1983 and got his start as a model in 2001, and appeared in numerous clothing, cell phone, and other advertisements, as well as music videos for groups like SG Wannabe and Gavy NJ. He made his first acting appearance in the MBC Nonstop sitcom series, then acted in the 2006 cable television version of Dasepo Naughty Girls, and Hyun Bin and Lee Yeon-hee’s Millionaire’s First Love.

UPDATE 2

Yoon Seol-hee has confessed more names of individuals who took drugs from her. Of the approximately 15 additional names, there are seven or eight more celebrities. Police will be following with investigation of those additional parties, “some of whom are as widely known as Joo.” Eep! This thing could get big(ger) and ugly(er).

I'm not saying that alcohol abuse and smoking tobacco are better or worse than the use of the drugs mentioned above, but considering how the "acceptable" and legal substances are abused in Korea, I am relieved that using other drugs are taboo.

I wonder is there is a correlation between heavy drinking and smoking in Korea and the strict ban on other drugs?

@201 FELICITY:

I know what you mean about signs and symptoms of a drug user. However, affirming Him as a drug user base on his "hobo" looks isnt a solid evidence nor a logical one. I know some people( people i see everyday at work actually!) who look clean and neat, are successful, and with such charm and are also a habitual and/or occassional drug user...... as the cliche goes, " cant judge a book by its cover"

Hobo look isnt my thing either.... but...oh well, andre kim's costumes are not my type too but they are gorgeous! LOL!

I won't judge him as a bad person but I'll say he's a stupid person for getting caught. Who knows what will happen to him since nothing's been done yet.
I don't think he's an addict though he's just been using them a couple of times because the report didn't say anything about him being addicted. And just because he dresses weird doesn't mean he's an addict there are a lot of celebrities with the same style and appearance isn't the way to go.

Though I feel sad for JJH, I can't help but think he... well, deserved it. Though I do not expect him, to be perfect, he knew full well the consequences when he took the drugs. He's lived in South Korea his entire life. He knew what he was signing up for when he chose to be a celebrity. Taking drugs anyway was just stupid.

That said, celebrity are people and people do stupid things. I don't think he's a bad person for doing drugs, just a stupid one, and his career is undeniably over. Now... if he was TRAFFICKING then I'd be pissed off. Don't push it on others even if you made that retarded decision, especially when you're richer than most of the world.

Just like criminals after going to jail finding their life is crippled, JJH will find his career over after this case, because South Korea's drug laws and attitude towards drugs is so strict. And though I pity him, it has undeniable benefits. How many of American celebs are into drugs? And how many Korean celebs? If all of the celebs got JAILED and their careers ruined, see if the number does not decrease.

My asian parents has never given me speeches, because they would never even THINK of drugs as a right of passage. It's a zero tolerance thing, and both they and I know that. And that strengthens my resolve to stay clear.

Anyway, rant over. But I'd like to re-stress for us to NOT put North America's standards towards Korea in this case. Laws are different. Situations and attitudes are different (as shown when Belleza and Javabeans both made clear that JJH's career is DEFINITELY OVER, unlike most drugged celebs in the US). It's as unfair to condemn Korea for being strict as it is for us to think drugs in US are taken only by the rich percentile without any repercussions and no violence. US is not simply a bloated beast of a spoiled nation (some parts, but not all).

@ Belleza - I love you Belleza. I think if school used that speech you gave way more kids would choose abstinence. xD (drama-addicted kids anyway.)

No, no, you misunderstood me. I am not affirming that JJH is a drug user based solely on his hobo fashion at red-carpet events. LOL. Obviously we can't tell a drug user going only by how clean/unkempt a person looks! You're right, we can't judge a book by its cover. But it's definitely one of the visual signs when someone you know suddenly loses interest in their personal grooming. Andre Kim, I think he has the market cornered on the alien look. :)

@Belleza

Yeah! Leonardo DiCaprio was wonderful and sexy in Blood Diamond, african accent and all. :P But you know, I still find Jack Dawson his most adorable leading character ever. Hehehe. Cheesy as the romance was, I consider it a 'coming of age story' for the lovebirds condensed in two short days on a big boat, lol!

Noooooooooooooo! Not the pretty boys!!! Damn you JJH! I loved him in Goong and The Devil and I was looking forward to seeing more of him, but now it looks like I'll be down to Antique Bakery and The Naked Kitchen since his project options are probably gonna go plunk! in the future...if he has one. *sob*

Personally, I hate recreational drugs of any kind. It's kinda sad that we Westerners are so blasé about it when facing it in our society. I mean, if I heard today that any one of the Hollywood actors turned out to be a closet crackhead, it would elicit nothing more than a 'meh' from me...really, it wouldn't surprise me. Even those with supposed 'clean' images. But it's funny how in a million years I would have never put a South Korean actor and drugs together in the same sentence. Once again, damn you Joo Ji Hoon, damn you for bursting my bubble.

PS - I'm writing this while my head is floating away from me (no, I'm not high on drugs, just high in temperature and all the other wonderful goodness that being sick brings) so just ignore my nonsense...

It's really weird how things end up in the end.

I recall 2 years ago when Joo Ji Hoon fans were really mean and were making fun of Kim Jong Kook's huge muscles they were taunting KJK fans to make them mad saying that he probably is a steroid freak. It hurt us KJK fans a lot.

But now I guess we know who really IS the REAL DRUGGIE!

I truly believe in the saying "be good, or your actions will come back to bite you"

"But you know, I still find Jack Dawson his most adorable leading character ever."

But that's because you never read the original script. This is how it was supposed to go . . .

*cue ice scene*
Jack: "You're gonna get out of here, you're gonna go on and make lots of babies, and you're gonna watch them grow. BTW Rose, I have something to confess. I am addicted to absinthe. And the money I made with my moonshine operation is how I got my ticket."
Rose: "Jack?"
Jack: "King of the World Whiskey, distilled 1917. Now Rose promise me that . . ."
Rose: "Oh my grip slipped. Oopsie."

*cue public service announcement*
Leonardo: "Hello, my name is Leonardo Dicaprio"
Kate: "And my name is Kate Winslet."
Leonardo: "You have just seen a 3-hour re-enacment of the Titanic disaster, a disaster that could have been avoided if the captain wasn't drinking and driving."
Kate: "And remember girls, even if your guy saves you from a cataclysmic event, that is no excuse for being an alcoholic. Absinthe is for Losers!!"
Leonardo: "Don't let alcohol ruin your life."
Kate: "Don't be a Jack Dawson. Thank you.

Thanks JB for clearing up the info about whether he dealt drugs or not.

I know I said I was disappointed, I still am because like I said he had great potential and he knew the consequences of using drugs (especially hard drugs). But I do agree with what Michi and Samsooki said he's only human, and especially the fact that we all have made mistakes. I do feel bad about how he will be treated in the press, by the entertainment community, by the netizens and the public in general. Some of it will be really harsh and downright mean, and a lot of which he probably shouldn't deserve.

The reason why I was really disappointed earlier is not because I care whether he did drugs or not (I live in the US and while I don't agree with drug use, perhaps I've become desensitized to an extent regarding celebrities and drug use? But the culture here is a lot different. And many of the posters have picked out the differences so I won't go into that) but because he knew what would happen if he got caught (and he ruined his career) and especially because I thought he was actually dealing the drugs (but thanks again JB for making it clear that he wasn't). Anyways, I feel bad for any fans, especially ones that looked up to him.
OH and I would like to rant, this kind of reminded me of Heath Ledger's death (a actor I really liked) and how something easily as an accidental overdose took away his life. While you really can't compared the two...JJH isn't in the same boat, and thankfully nothing physically tragic has happened to him because of his use of drugs (knock on wood: some of you have me scared when you'll mentioned previous suicides). But It seems to me that it really is frustrating on fans to lose someone or lose respect of someone who you really appreciated as an actor or singer (especially of people who haven't hit their prime yet) and adored because of something that could have been easily prevented by better choices. Maybe it's because we're scared of making the same mistakes as them and because we've invested a lot emotionally, and so those losses are almost intensely felt as our own.

@belleza
I loved the Kids Letter! Yay! for drama references :)

This is the second time I've read about this news today. Too bad people with great potential end up doing stuff like this, and ruin their lives. x_x Why do people always tend to do stuff that would cause trouble? 0_o Human psychology is very interesting, indeed.

What's even more interesting is that Asia (especially east Asia) is a region notorious for drugs and violence. I'm quite surprised to see Dramabeans wrote "Drug use — particularly in South Korea — is a big, big deal, and potentially career-killing stuff." Of course anyone in his/her right mind knows that drugs are BAD!

Aisssh, this is going to be an interesting development. =X I can't imagine what is going on in JJH's mind. He had (and still has) such great potential. Why ruin something that's not broken in the first place? -_-" Ai yai yai.

Gotta give the man kudos for his consistency. No one imitates Andre Kim better than Andre Kim!

How sad. I've only seen him in Princess Hours and i loved his Prince Shin. I didn't realise how strict things are in South Korea with regards to drug use and this conversation has been very informative. I really hope he pulls through. As much as i think recreational use of illegal drugs deserves a slap on the wrist, he wasn't dealing and i don't think he deserves to have his career, his family and his life devastated because of it.

Its really a shame that this happened. I've always liked JJH's work ever since Goong and like a lot of people have said, he was steadily improving with each new project.. So its really disappointing if we are never going to be able to see anything new from him... I think he would have become a top actor for sure.
And I agree that we dont know the entire story yet so we shouldn't be so quick to condemn him. If like he said, he just used it a couple of times, then he should be given a second chance (maybe make him go to rehab or something).... Actually even if it turns out that he was a drug addict, that doesn't take away from the fact that he is a good actor and a nice person.
and those comments about the fact that he dresses like a "hobo" guarantees that he is an addict are ridiculous! While it may be true that some people lose interest in personal grooming if they're addicted to drugs, at least in JJH's case I think it was a fashion statement! I've seen him up close and he smelled very nice, thank you. And he was also very nice and polite which is why I still am hoping and praying that his part in this fiasco ends at what has been stated by dramabeans.
The police should send those people involved in the sex scandal to jail first!

it's amazing how close-minded these responses have been. i find it really sad that after something like this, fans are ready to desert him just like that. samsooki, well said. what he does with his body is his business and does not in any way influence my opinion of him as an actor. JJH is still JJH. and i think if any of you guys were caught doing something like this, you would hope that there are people who aren't so judgmental of your mistakes.

many comments have included the statement that no matter how you look at it, drugs are bad. like it is as simple as 1 + 1 = 2. i beg to differ. in fact, i wish to know just exactly what makes doing E a couple of times SO WRONG. i am a believer of the idea that as long as i don't hurt anyone else what i do to my body is my business and i'll be damned if i let anybody tell me what i should or shouldn't do to it. and no, E is NOT chemically addictive. go read up on it. any article on the internet or in a book will tell you so. so many of you have this warped idea of drugs and people who do drugs, whether that they are all messed up people, they look like hobos, or they don't wash, or their lives are wholly out of control. it's absolutely ridiculous. they're not monsters. and i find all this demonizing completely depressing. but what can i do. le sigh.

I was just telling a friend this morning about JJH admitting to doing drugs. She was floored about the news too (she's a huge fan of his and watches Goong and watches the full series about 3-4 times a year) - first about the drugs use (which is condemnable in our eyes) and second the fact that this is a career killer for him. I'm sure any projects he had lined up in the near future is gone and he will have to suffer the proper consequences from the authorities along with the public views.

Like Samsooki stated (#179), JJH is human and as humans we are prone to make mistakes. It's a shame his career will suffer from this stupid mistake and I am sure he's reflecting on his wrong doings since being busted. It doesn't make him any less of a person just because he used/abused drugs. He's not the only one in the world who has, but as KPop fans we all now this is detrimental to ones career. I'm sure he will be punished correctly by the authorities and the public and this will definitely halt his career for the time being. Hopefully after some reflection and cleaning himself up he will eventually be able to work as an actor again. I just hope that later down the line he will be able to make somewhat of a comeback because I thought he was turning out to be an actor showing some promising talents. It will all depend on how the Korean netizens will accept him and it won't be an easy task for him to accomplish but as long as he's able to maintain or improve his acting skills hopefully they can eventually look past his mistakes and just accept him as a person with wonderful acting skills.

It's a pity that he resorted to this...he have reasons for doing so for sure....there's no justification for doing so whether someone is a public figure or not....Its good he has no confirmed gf or else that person will be dragged to his mess. If he resorted to this because of problems..he could have chosen another way to solve. Everyone's human yup, human to choose the right or wrong path! it's his choice to take this path....all of us should be responsible for our actions..celeb on non celeb..that's how life is.

its regretful being a fan of him once. It's good others choose to remain loyal...I respect that...but for those who choose to remain loyal.... hope they can respect those who decided to be "ex-fans".

Its end of career for him....a comeback several yrs from now? it could be hard he's "tainted". all deserve second chances but I dont think any production or Mgt companies of actors/actresses would easily allow their wards associate/work with him again. It's also good he has no on going drama or else that production will be severly affected.

entertainment's been good to him, he has earned a lot..maybe enough for him to move on to new business or field..and rebuild people's trust from there.

I didn't think using drugs can lead a person to totally not like someone. I mean sure it is a big deal in Korea but to me it's kind of normal to see celebs using drugs...

Oh well, if that's how it is then too bad for him. That's the place where he lives and yet he doesn't know how important it is to remain clean of drugs especially as a celebrity.

Just finished watching Antique Bakery, which I liked. Its a shame that such a promising future has been cut short because of sheer stupidity. Its a known fact that taking these types of drugs are detrimental to the person and those who around that person, yet why do it? Why take drugs, when you know its very very bad for you? Its a constant question that comes to mind. Since in Korea your image especially that your personal life plays a large aspect in an celebrity's future one should be extremely careful. In this case he was careless and now this part of his life may come to an early but permanent end. I wish him all the luck in the future hoping that he and others learn from this. seriously u r testing my patience, yes u can post whatever, but all I'm asking is be responsible. Learn fr Belleza (kudos babe for your letter. <33 for the HB reference!!!!!)

Fessing up, I've been in pharmacy sch hell long to know my stuff. and I'm currently working with psych patients, some of whom have drug dependencies. PLEASE Don't spread dangerous mindless words that some drugs are less harm for you and u can take it recreationally since it's not chemically addictive, yes, I'm begging.

As I've tried to say to you in particular, I've never said things are black or white or drugs are 'bad'. I've used words like potentially all over, wanting to stress that JUST with that possibility u r 'unfortunate' and will get hooked on the high/get caught, the consequences are devastating. On the contrary, what I'm saying is there are no 'good' drugs, only effective drugs. Tylenol/Panadol can kill you with a VERY slow and painful death if you overdose on it. For sth that will affect your CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, you really r out of luck to say it's 'safe' to use recreationally.

Korean society is strict on MANY MANY things. I have been to Korea 15 times and this is what I have observed :

a) I have never seen couples make out in public. The most I see is them leaning their heads together say, for example during a concert or holding hands.

b) Priority seats in the subway are PRIORITY seats. Don't even think about sitting down in those seats (even if you may get up when there's an elderly or more needy person) if you're not old. Don't sit down - unless you want to risk a tongue lashing by an ajumma.
