Kim Sun-ah and Cha Seung-won dance for City Hall

It’s press conference day for City Hall!

On the 16th, the cast was at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Seoul to talk about the upcoming SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama, which is probably most anticipated for its leading lady, Kim Sun-ah. She stars opposite leading man Cha Seung-won in the upbeat, comic series (watch preview below).

Everyone’s eyes are on Kim’s return — it hasn’t been that long since her previous series, last summer’s When Night Comes with Lee Dong-gun, but that series flopped and Kim is still most recognizable for her 2005 turn as Kim Sam-soon.

City Hall‘s chief producer expressed confidence that it would be a big hit, while On Air writer Kim Eun-sook calls City Hall the “most fun drama I’ve written so far.”

The series seems light and funny — which is something Kim Sun-ah does well — but it’s got competition. KBS and MBC are also premiering romantic comedies featuring big-name movie stars:

MBC’s Cinderella Man stars Kwon Sang-woo (although it got off to a tepid start yesterday with a 9.3% rating), and KBS’s Six Months just changed its name to Just Looking or While I Was Looking [그저 바라 보다가] and stars Kim Ah-joong and Hwang Jung-min. The latter premieres on the same day as City Hall — April 29.

This all makes for an interesting TV landscape: Monday-Tuesdays are going to sageuk nights for a long while (excepting my current infatuation, the dark Story of a Man), while Wednesday-Thursdays will be dominated by trendy dramas. It’s too bad, actually; I wish the stations mixed it all up for some variety rather than trying to go head to head, genre to genre.

@sere,

My to-watch list is finally shrinking a bit. I watched Snow Queen (my comments to come, in an open thread, perhaps) by myself this week, and we finished Evasive Inquiry Agency (comments to come as well). And last week we watched and savored / loved Bad Family. So, three dramas down in 2 weeks, not bad.

Last night, the Soulmate box set arrived from DVDAsian, along with The Good, The Bad and the Weird. We decided to watch the movie first, because once we start Soulmate, it is likely we won't interrupt it for a movie.

Lee Byung-hoon.... wow. if you ever get to watch this movie.. there is a scene where he has his shirt off. You might think you've seen a ripped body, but you've not seen a ripped body until you see Lee Byung Heon... dude looked like he was chiselled from stone.... was actually kind of shocking. I totally didn't know he was that cut.

So here's our future list, after crossing off Bad Family, Evasive Inquiry Agency, Soulmate (currently watching starting tonight), and Snow Queen. I also deleted BBF just because.

1. 1% of Anything (2003)
2. Dae Jang Geum (2003)
3. Attic Cat (2003)
4. What Star Did You Come From (2006)
5. What's up, Fox? (2006)
6. The Time Between Dog and Wolf (2007)
7. Dal Ja’s Spring (2007)
8. 9 End 2 Outs (2007)
9. Que Sera Sera (2007)
10. The Legend (2007)
11. Il Jae Mae (2008)
12. Last Scandal (2008)
13. Truth (2008)
14. Beethoven Virus (2008)
15. Who Are You (2008)
16. Hong Gil Dong (2008)
17. The Painter of the Wind (2008)
18. Return of Il Jae Mae (2009)

At some point, however, i will declare a certain week to be, "Re-watch Week" and we will watch Kim Sam Soon, Coffee Prince and My Girl again. And, Snow Queen will have to be re-watched, because my wife didn't really get to watch it.

javabeans, was the presscon held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Seoul and not the Hyatt in Incheon? I thought it's in Incheon but I may have understood it incorrectly.

I LOVE YOU KIM SUN AH!! (my photobucket will tell you no lies)

Did she get her nose done again to lower the bridge because I cant see inside her nostrils anymore when she's standing straight. Whatever happened to her nose it looks so much better now and the drama looked really funny!!

My favourite role of hers was in Greatest Expectations XDDD so funny

Ha! Kim Sun Ah is the Queen of Comedy (and i'm not making this up, it was the "tag" given to her by arirang even prior to MNIKSS http://www.arirang.co.kr/TV/Show_Biz_Online.asp?PROG_CODE=TVCR0112&code=Po3&ACTOR_SEQ=627) . And she'll finally meet the King of Comedy.

The very little character description given out in the news sounds boring and serious. A young woman mayor and a government official aiming for presidency. And then?

When BTS videos came out, I was confused myself... it's looks comedy... but maybe it isn't. Politics=comedy?

But when the previews/teaser came out. I can't stop laughing. I just have one more wish. For the writer-pd team to sustain it. I'm sure we will have no problems with our two leads.

►it reminds me of Ms.Congeniality as well - at least on the scene when the pageant's contestants were rehearsing their production number, can-can dance, and KSA's character is missing the steps. Reminds me when Gracie Hart was rehearsing Dancing Queen: http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/1128/hartk.jpg

►B.O.N. Funsubs shows interest in subbing this drama. Looking for more translators though, anyone interested?

►for me it's the other way around. seeing Hyun Bin with other girls makes me jealous. I just want him for Samsoon. But seeing Suna with other guys is just soooo fine (especially if the guys are as hot as CSW)

►don't worry, you're not the only one... i have a huuuuge to-watch list as well... and another to-rewatch list that too.

*I'm so happy with people's initial reaction for this drama. Better than viewer's reaction regarding When It's At Night last year! Yey! Rooting for Kim Sun Ah!

Thanks for the retraction, alodia. If I had use of some emoticons, my own tongue in cheek might be more easily understood. I would never, ever, denegrade any of these talents and were I to start, Sun-Ah would be one of the last people that I would question. I simply love this actress! For me, she is the "star" of "stars." If laughter can indeed add time to one's life, then I'm sure that I owe Sun-Ah for at least a few extra weeks worth of breathing...

my, my, I am getting such strong and super good vibes from this trailer. Read Cinderella Man recap and I am going to snub CM with my nose so high up. Looks like City Hall will go head on with Just Looking (sounds a bit odd to me).

Here's to KSA and CSW teamwork. If PD/Writer combo shows a single of going wayward, please bring out the paddle!

Less than 2 weeks to wait but it feels like an eternity! :-)

I'm really looking forward to this drama. Love both the lead actor/actress. CSW is so funny in Jail Break. KSA... she's my favourite actress and I know she'll ace this one too ;)

BON fansub please don't show interest in this drama if you just gonna go on hiatus after subbing a couple of dramas. Pissed me off. Subbing needs commitment. If you can't, just continue subbing older dramas. That suits your slow pace or rather "my pace" attitude much better. Don't sub the new ones.

I wish everyone would give this drama a chance. This is the truly a great drama. It is almost revolutionary in that it is slightly spearheading a change in the air of korean dramas that have long been known to viewers worldwide. What I mean is that it is not your typical korean drama and the change is for the better. This view parallels the story of City Hall itself, where you see Mirae the tempest stirring up a storm in Inju's politics. If you watch perhaps you will pick up this message about doing politics the Mirae way and about doing dramas the City Hall way.
