MBC also bans Joo Ji-hoon

This isn’t really a surprise, nor is it really even necessary: following the KBS banning of actor Joo Ji-hoon and his partners in drug-crime (drug trafficker Yoon Seol-hee and funder Yeh Hak-young), broadcast station MBC is following suit.

I say it’s not necessary because even without the ban, it’s unlikely Joo would be hired again anytime soon, but I suppose those stations like to make their symbolic gestures. Actor Na Han-il also suffers the same punishment for taking illegal loans and bribing bank officials. (He was also included in the KBS ban.)

(In the last post, you guys asked for uglier pics of Joo Ji-hoon to soften the blow, so I went and looked for the least attractive photos I could find. I hope this does the job.)

Yeah......... I dont think it matters if they ban him or not since I'm pretty sure I won't be seeing him on tv anytime soon.

But I guess they just want to make it official and clear that JJH is banned from MBC.

"uglier pics of Joo Ji-hoon to soften the blow"

lol. So thats why the picture was so unappealing... XD

Sadly, the image of handsome JJH is so strong that it still resides in my mind. No matter how many "ugly" pics of him I see, I'll still get the Prince look from Goong appearing in my head~~~~

Such a shame I wont be seeing that face again :O

On the bright side, maybe he'll return as a model (since that has nothing to do with being on tv as an actor) or he could be a director ^^ Or writers on anti-drugs and we'll see him lots~

Or maybe the next President?

I'm sure there are other ways we may be able to see him *cough*or.simply.stalk.him*cough*

Because pretty people don't do drugs. Or commit crimes. And ugly people do both all the time. And mediocre-looking people just judge the others based on it.

I was amused at your comment, but then, I got a little depressed too. :(

(Though for a bad picture of him--you could always find one of his fashion disaster pictures.)

i feel so sad for him and his career he had it all and to go and ruin that because he wants to "enhance" his music listening experience...i'm currently re-watching Goong and i just feel so sad..well, i know the Korean people won't forgive him easily but i do hope to see him on screen again in the future..i think he should come out, apologized and ask for forgiveness..i think if he comes out not pleading but being real with people and his fans then they'll see that and maybe forgive him

Wouldn't it still be difficult for him to model, especially if it is for a Korean brand, because advertisers/companies wouldn't want to have their product/image associated with a person known to have been using drugs?

When the photo of Michael Phelps using a bong was leaked, Kellogg's dropped him as one of their spokesperson.

Thanks for the update JB, and the NOT SO ugly, ugly pic ( also the sugar after med' pic)

Wonder if the reason JJH has been publicly silent, is on legal advice until the case has been finalized. Hope that the wait for news of the trial is in his favor, let the publicity die down, the police to follow this traffic to source and wrap this up without media anger and bias.

Still hope for his return, in time repentant, reformed, forgiven and given a second chance.

sigh.....sad,sad.

I remember seeing someone comment that it's kind of a good thing he got busted for drug use, instead of an O.D. or suicide, and I have to agree. Joo Ji-hoon is so far the only person to stay on my top 5 list of fav. Korean actors, not because he's such a great actor, but because I see so much potential in him, and because he has such an endearing personality off screen. I guess I kind of feel like a mother in this respect, hoping that he'll learn from this lesson, and always love him no matter what. Too bad his career is down that drain. But the people in Taiwan are very forgiving! Maybe he can learn Mandarin and come here? (crosses-fingers) (But my friend would say, he didn't come when he was famous, so why should we accept him now? Hmm....)

Now im really scared...now that another prominent Korean took his life; former presi. Roh Moo-hyun who just added himself to the somewhat god-knows-when-will-suicide-ends-list. Let's just hope that JJH would take his punishment as another lesson learned in his life, move on and start a new...coz honestly with all those fingers pointing at him and those stones that has been cast upon him, well he might, to save his face...might do or think of ending his life too...but then again im crossing my fingers... what he did was bad but somehow it's also a blessing in disguise..for the issue about drug pushing and using served as a bridge to let the young ones know bout the consequences of using this and make them realize that what is an hour of pleasure followed by years of pain... it's crazy!

Say, if in 5/6 years people and the K-entertainment are ready to forgive him and let him go back to be an actor, would the bans still stand? Or would the stations lift them? Sorry, this is the first time I see something like this happening though I know it happened in the past.

[[[[Something like this happened in the 60s here: one of the most popular female singers of the time, a single woman, fell in love with a married guy and got pregnant (it was SUCH a scandal back then). She got banned from the national stations, but a few years later they lifted the ban cos she's was just too popular. ]]]]

I'm asking about this cos I recall the KBS banned him "indefinitely"...and I don't quite know how to react to that.

Wow, harsh. I think he should definitely be punished, legally, but the mans gotta make a living. Why ban him from doing that? I just think that's taking it a bit too far. He's such a public figure with a lot of fans. Instead of banning him and "hiding him in the closet" forcing us to seek out the ugly pics - make him do some PSA's (do they do that in Korea?). Something that'll help him and those that view him as a role model. He made a huge mistake, but we as human beings shouldn't make eachother feel like scum for that. No one's perfect.

Isn't it true that both KBS and MBC are government-owned or at least, government-affiliated?

If so, having KBS ban JJH but MBC doing nothing would be a little bit inconsistent. Then again, given the sensitivity of the relationship between the government and the media, if KBS and MBC both banned JJH on the same day, it would appear that they are in lock-step and not acting independently. I think it is pretty obvious that MBC was going to ban JJH (given the public interest in maintaining the same stance as the government, in terms of being harsh against drug use and criminal enterprise), but the timing of it seems to have been done so that MBC would look like they are thinking for themselves. This is a fairly cynical point of view, but really, the relationship between and among the Korean government and KBS / MBC is pretty much like a Mormon husband and two wives.

The more progressive and understanding path would have been for MBC to announce that it decries any drug use, and is extremely disappointed in JJH's actions and his lack of responsibility to his family, his fans, his projects, and most of all, to the citizens of Korea. However, MBC understands that everyone makes mistakes, and once the judicial process has been resolved, MBC will support JJH's return, if JJH has proved himself to be reformed and repentant.

Something like that would have been courageous and different enough from KBS' knee-jerk government reaction. Plus, while the effect would have been the same (an indefinite suspension), the symbolic effect would have been tremendous - MBC is progressive, MBC is understanding, MBC is responsible, and MBC is not the government's bitch.

Too bad for MBC. They had a real chance to grow some balls, and they blew it. (On the other hand, I guess I should be honest - if I were the MBC chief, and I allowed that kind of statement to be released, I would be risking my own job... and I doubt even I have the stones to authorize the release of that statement and risk my career just to support JJH. Seriously, if your extremely well paying job were on the line, would YOU risk your livelihood and your family's well-being just to support JJH?).

Honestly, I don't feel sorry for him one bit. He isn't some immature teenager that got into the wrong crowd and crumbled under peer pressure (and even then, that's not really an excuse, because as a teenager I knew some friends/classmates who got into some serious drug use and I never once allowed myself to get pressured by them).

He's an adult and knew that taking those drugs was illegal...and apparently drug-related crimes are taken very seriously in Korea. On top of that he's an entertainer, and thus a public figure. He must have been really stupid if he thought that there wouldn't be some major consequences if he got caught. I think that what these networks are doing is actually good; it sends a very strong message against illegal drug use, letting the public know that no matter who you are or how popular you may be, you'll be held accountable for your actions. I actually wish illegal drug use among celebs here in U.S. would be taken as seriously.

Nonetheless, I do hope that he will learn & grow from this. I hope that he accepts what he did was wrong, and accepts these consequences with grace...and not wallow in self-pity...or like someone above mentioned, choose suicide as a way out of his current situation. I wish him luck.

He is what he is -- a druggie who got caught and reportedly confessed. An ugly picture isn't going to erase that.

"So only ugly people commit crimes? Or is it easier to accept that an ugly person commits crime?"

I'm not sure if you misinterpreted the sentiment -- people asked jokingly for an ugly picture because posting a pretty one reminded them of the pretty face they would not be able to see for the immediate future.
