Tamna the Island’s preview trailers

The two new preview trailers for Tamna the Island [탐나는도다] are short, but give us an idea of the goofy comic touch the new drama promises. One features lead actor Im Joo-hwan (Boys Before Flowers) as a snobby nobleman’s son, and the other shows lead actress Seo Woo‘s (Crush and Blush) encounter with a washed-up (literally) Englishman, played by French model Hwang Chan-bin (aka Pierre Deporte).

Based on the descriptions and still photos, it was pretty clear that this would be a fun adventure series (more fusion, less sageuk); the trailers confirm that the tone is firmly fixed in outrageous, possibly farcical territory.

I can’t recall a similarly themed drama in recent memory (or perhaps ever), but tonally I’d have to say that it feels most akin to Hong Gil Dong — when that drama was being light-hearted and silly, of course, not as it grew serious in its latter part as it turned to political intrigue.

Tamna the Island is MBC’s new weekend series, and premieres on August 8 when Chae Rim‘s Job Well Done leaves airwaves.

I find the one of the ladies' outfits (in the second trailer) a bit short and revealing for an Asian drama...Cmon this is not Sailor Moon manga,,,

I'm really excited for this series. It looks purely comical, and the humor seems like it would be farfetched and outrageous.

*sighs* any chance they might put in a non-Korean female as a lead in some drama one day? (Non-Asian female lead like from Europe or America). Not very fair that they put in a French guy and i've never seen a drama where they put in a female European lead, at least in my opinion. I'll be looking forward to when this drama will be over. No offense meant to anyone.

I just finished watching Mr. Brain and been trying to find something to catch my eye. I haven't been able to hop onto anything too serious since BBF. I think I'm going to give this drama a chance while I wait for Lady Castle.

@Ora Something about your statement seems off to me. Korea isn't exactly a melting pot at the same rate other western countries are. So it seems unlikely they would have a European descent lead. It would be unfitting to me if they had a non Korean lead. I don't understand why it isn't 'fair' that they put in a French dude and not a girl. I should hope a country would produce something that reflects their society. Something their people would want to watch. They can get imported shows all the time. Although this drama is obviously historically un-reliable, there's more of a chance of a french explorer coming ashore then his women counterpart. Also not to mention the problems that will occur if they ever had a drama that was based on a non Korean or Asian actress. Ratings dropping, possible viewer protest. To me what your asking is what they did to the Dragon ball Z movie.

@Ora
How is it "unfair" that there's a French guy in this drama but there's never been a European girl? It's hardly unfair, it's just that no kdrama has required a European female lead so far. The only reason why they're bringing in Pierre Deporte is because Tamna the Island is based on a manga about a European man being shipwrecked there, and casting a top Korean actor and making him dye his hair platinum blonde wouldn't really work that well. Unless there's a similar requirement for a non-Korean female lead, I see no reason why they should cast one in the future. It'd be weird to see that happening without a need for it.

Trying to remember my Korean history ... wasn't Tamna the old name of Jeju-do? Sometime during the Silla kingdom timeframe?

@waruihime

Yup, Tamra's the name of Jeju. And yeah, the island known for wind, rocks, and women. Famous for tough diving ladies. :D

Anyway, here's an English wiki entry:
