Sol Pharmacy son Lee Pil-mo enjoys sharp rise in popularity

Lee Pil-mo is currently hamming it up — and turning on the waterworks — in KBS’s Sons of Sol Pharmacy, and receiving great response for his portrayal of the loud, boyish, impossible but charming second son Dae-pung. (There has been some grumbling about his tendency to exaggerate, but I think it’s outweighed by the positive reaction. For the record, I agree that he exaggerates excessively but also find him endearing, and he has also done well expressing his recent, more serious side.)

The entire cast is enjoying heightened popularity with the drama’s over-35% ratings, but 33-year-old Lee Pil-mo is one of the most prominent. His situation reminds me somewhat of Yoon Sang-hyun’s during Queen of Housewives, actually, and like Yoon, Lee Pil-mo has gained a lot of endorsement power. In the space of the past year alone, he has doubled his CF asking price.

Most recently, he has become the official brand rep for fast-food company Lotteria. According to his management, he has received many CF offers, and was chosen for this latest one based on the friendly image he conveys through his Sol Pharmacy role. He shot the CF on August 25, which will begin running in September.

And the Sol Pharmacy-related successes continue…

I am definitely a fan and he has done a great job with the Dae Pung character. I think the fact that he "exaggerates" his character is what gives life to the character to begin with. I don't think Dae Pung would be as aggravating and endearing if he were not so much larger than life to begin with and Lee Pilmo has really breathed life into the character.

I was re-watching "Sweet 18" yesterday, and I think he played a friend of Lee Dong-gun's character. I can't be sure because people look so different after five years, but I really do think it's Lee Pil-mo.

I first noticed Lee Pil-mo when he was in "Here Comes Ajumma" and there was something about him which stood out in an otherwise so-so drama (in my opinion only, no offense to those who liked this drama). I'm glad to see he is finally getting some notice.

gaahh!! seriously? you all know i love this show, but lee pil mo gets on my last nerve. i kinda wanna punch him every time i see him, even though they've tried to make him more sympathetic. i don't begrudge him any success-- on the contrary, more power to him-- but i just don't really get it. on the other hand, maybe the fact that i have such a strong reaction to him means that he's doing a good job.

@ smallfish - I totally agree. He makes it very hard for me to make it through an episode. I just can't find anything to like about his character. He's obnoxious and so juvenile. I wince whenever he appears, especially his crying scene-It was totally overdone and devoid of any real emotion. Other than that it's a good drama. I'm enjoying all the other characters and will continually to watch.

I completely love him in that show. The two older brothers are my favorite characters.

I find Lee Pil-mo to be a wonderful physical comedian (his stances and posture are are my favorite things) but then he can be genuinely heartfelt as well.

I have enjoyed him throughout. Love him...

I am enjoying this comedy drama. I like the cast and recognise most of them from former roles. I think Mama is a little over the top. She surely does beat on those grown men..
I like Yi Pilmo as an actor. I think he must have a great sense of humour to play a role like this one. It is so over the top and needs a lot of energy. Does he ever get tired emoting. It almost becomes hysterical. He will surely get his come uppance when he finds out who and what his despised nurse really is.
The other brothers are so different and I wonder how those two parents produced such sons in the first place. The father is such a moron at times. Most of the time...
I like Sujin. This actress is doing the neatest job with this 'spinster' role. she does not go for the glamour but she still seems so attractive. I hope she makes the right brother happy.
The most unrealistic character is the nurse. She is such a doormat from the start that it seems impossible to believe in that aspect once you find out who she really is. Surely she is too intelligent to act like a dummy when she is with Daepung.

But. I enjoy this drama.

wow this is really the year for older actors in their 30s!

I agree that Lee Pil-mo overacts in this drama. I really liked him in You Are My Destiny though- he was one of the very few good things about that drama.

i'm glad he's getting the popularity!

i like him. watched him since daughters in law. i don't like his character, but he sure knows how to play his character well. when they say dae pung's inconsistent. lee pilmo sure shows it.

the part where he balance between his serious self and how he hides it with his exaggerating facade (i sincerely believe it's a facade to hide whatever he's hiding deep inside) is just so well done. the rest of the brothers are more easily explained, but dae pung's personality is just so complex. so kudos to lee pilmo! XD

*spoiler*

i like his fight with jinpung and how he showed some emotional depth.

i like how he cut ties with sujin cause that's when he showed that he's not a very playboy after all.

i like how he meets bokshil again and for that split moment showed how much he missed her.

but yes, i absolutely agree that he deserves that big fat slap.

Pilmo has been a standout in each of the five series that I've seen him in. As 'Sol Pharmacy' is partially a comedy farce, "overacting" (as was the case in Boys Over Flowers, among others...) is par for the course. We're supposed to cringe when we see him as Daepung. The more we cringe now, the better the impact will be when his character is finally broken down and rebuilt with the neccessary improvements. Pilmo's dramas have been almost exclusively of the long-running, daily variety. The dailies allow for character development over a period of time. A longer attention span and a stronger stomach are required in order to enjoy their viewing. This actor has yet to disappoint me in anything to date. That his star is on the rise is no surprise to me.

This guy character in Sol pharmacy - Dae pung. Sometimes I want to punch him as he is little irritating and interfering. Sometimes he acts funny and innocent. As an actor he is doing good job. But my order in that drama is father, grandfather, 3rd son, first son, 4th son, miran, mother, 2nd son, daughter in law ----- Ofcourse, Hana and Mari are the best.

If this was the first drama you've seen Lee Pilmo in, you would think he was just the biggest ham ever. (what's the Korean word for ham??) But having seen him in Daughters in Law and then in You Are My Destiny (groan -- when I could stand to watch the latter), i see his range. I agree with JB -- it'd be nice if he could turn down the intensity a notch or two.

Still, I think we are *supposed* to want to slap him (on the tush? keke) for the first 25 eps, to set the stage for his change in character.

sudden thought: gee, I wonder where Daepung gets his extreme personality from. Couldn't be his... mother??? ^^

he's perfect ... first I saw him in You're my destiny and he was gr8 with the role of a serious lover ..... I am so happy that he's gaining more popularity ....WISH HIM THE BEST !

he's more better in recent episodes which he has some tragic stories with new Boksil - Dr Jennifer .... I know she loves him , too but I am sorry for Daepung when I see Boksil dating with that new doctor ...
I know he's a little playful but he has human impressions andfeelings too and he can be really jealous sometimes

Again Wish The best 4 him ....

I started to notice him when he acted in "the golden era of daughters in law".
He make me sit up and notice him when I saw him again in "Here comes Ajuma" and the "Sol Pharmacy".

He is very versatile in his acting. In The golden era he played a comedian. Whereas in "Here comes ajuma", he played a rich young man who is madly
in love with a woman older than him.

To sum it up, he always played a passionate lover, who will get the girl , against all oldd no matter what in the end.
