Gu Hye-sun directs a short for Asiana Film Fest

On October 6, actress-director Gu Hye-sun spoke at a press interview for the upcoming 7th Asiana International Short Film Festival about another of her film efforts. She was wearing her director’s hat at the event, although not for her recent short film, The Madonna (aka The Cheerful Caretaker). She filmed a 30-second short trailer that will show before each screening and therefore takes a tone that is representative of the overall festival.

Gu Hye-sun explained, “The theme is love, but I made this thinking of the relationship between the media and people as one of love and hate. I hope you will find it interesting. …The production budget was small, so I had some difficulty directing the scenes that I had in mind. I received a lot of help from the art director and crew members.”

Also in attendance at the press event were actor Ahn Sung-ki, director and executive committeeman Kim Ji-woon, and actress and jury member Sohn Ye-jin. The festival takes place from November 5 through 10.

The most inspiring talent in the business just keeps on getting better and better....No one touchs this kid. The fact that thes panels and other noteworthy artists and directors keep signaling her out for praise only accentuates the point. We're all slackers by comparison!

oh come on-if you want to praise her please don't say we're all slackers by comparison-from what I read, movie/drama critics said she just got small talent-most of her works just suitable for her teens fans, not enough for higher level-she got to this level is bcos BOF.
Do you know, thousand of art/film students have produced more quality products than her.
By the way I RESPECT her determination and hard work, but sorry I cannot see the quality in her works.

@aspara,

True, although it is unfair to call all the rest of us slackers compared to her b/c I'm sure she was given more opportunities due to her popularity, I wonder if you've really seen, heard, or read any of her work before you judge the quality of them.

Frankly, although I too originally dismissed her work, I had to change my mind after reading her novel and listening to her new age album in person. This girl is definitely talented, and I can't wait to watch her upcoming full-length film.

@ Sally, the answers are YES and NO

YES-all her works-for out of curiosity
NO-cannot finish most of them, esp the BOF-only up to 2 eps-always pouting and screaming, make me change the tv channel. I do the same for other actress as well.
Btw-I hv read and watched other peoples work from other parts of the world not only on Kpop/drama.

I'm OK if her fans want to praise her like GOD or whatever, but please don't make comparison-prompted me to enter the war (eventhough I don't like it).

overrated.......

seriously, (some said )she's talented becos (some said)she's pretty and can do a little bit of everything..all this opportunities ..directing singing writing drawing wont be given if she never took gazillion of selcam and post it on internet and thanks to those mediocre BOF ///

but i think it is a good thing to bring her to the festival. it will only gain more PR for itself becos she's after an idol the media pay attention to it.

but seriously, don't say she is talented and some of us are slackers.. please..

i dnt even think she finished college or even going to one...
correct me if im wrong.. and im pretty sure everybody here nothing but a slacker...if u want to compare yourself to someone who mediocre at best u welcome to do so..

just don't use the word "we're all.." don't drag all of us here down there...

please..

I think, from my view point, when robbo4 was talking about "slackers", he/she meant that Gu Hye Sun is just SOOOOOOO busy everywhere and is taking advantage of every single opportunity. Than when you compare the things we get to do, it seems like it doesn't compare to all the things things the workload that Gu Hye Sun is doing every second.

@Apsara:

Although BOF did boost her popularity, Goo Hye Sun was already popular before BOF. She's already been the lead for dramas that had gone into the double digits in ratings. And even before BOF, she's had alot of cms (even with popular stars *Jung Il Woo/Jo In Sung/Hyun Binnie...more @___@) and had spread out in different areas.
She was pretty successful before BOF.

Now... I think it's unfair to compare her to people who have had training and education in these areas.. since they've obviously.... have training and education for those areas.

Even if students may have done better, for Gu Hye Sun, for not having training or a degree in drawing, directing, writing, and etc... and still have talent (even if a little) in these areas is awesome. Because even without this education in these areas, she has natural talent in it.
Just imagine how much she will improve wit a little more experience and learning!

I think that she's a person who wants to try all of the things that she wants to do. Even if BOF was never a hit, or even if she was never part of BOF, I think she would have released these albums, films, and novels in the future anyways. But naturally, like any other human would do, when there's a good opportunity to do something, most people take advantage of that time.

@Biscuit

I agree with you. I like GHS as much as I like Lee Dahae, Chaerim, and most of the other beautiful and talented K-actresses today, so I can't say I'm solely her fan. Having watched a lot of Kdramas including GHS's Nonstop4 and Pure19, I already knew she was popular way before BOF. Too bad for her though because of BOF, she gained a lot of antis but I think most of them never saw her prior dramas.

Personally, I like her attitude of trying to accomplish a lot of things she loves while she can, because not everybody is courageous or lucky enough to take up these kinds of opportunities. I wish I have half her talent and courage.

I guess I can be considered a "fan" since I've been following her work closely since BOF. Although I'm not cultured in the dramas of many different cultures, I do consider myself more knowledgeable than many when it comes to kdramas as I am an older kdrama fan who have been following and watching kdramas since the late 80s.

By no way do I consider Gu Hye-sun a god who excels in all areas. However, I do consider her acting in par w/ many of the young actresses around that age group who gets the work done but have room for improvement (Yoon Eun-hye, Moon Chae-won, and yes, even the older Song Hye-kyo, Jun Ji-hyun, or Kim Tae-hee). Let's be honest here, none of these actresses are at the level of Shin Eun-ha or Jeon Do-yun yet, and they're definitely no Go Du-shim or Kim Hye-ja. That being said, I do feel unfortunate that GHS seems to have been a target of more acting criticism in the past compared to these other young actresses, mostly b/c of her official "ulzzang" beginning and the craziness that was BOF (I was one of those people who enjoyed this craze, despite its many shortcomings).

As for the different fields that she had attempted so far, although we're all entitled to our own opinion, I agree that in no way did she display that she was a genius in all the fields. Whereas her artwork was mediocre at best (although props to her for donating the money earned from her exhibition to a charity), she surprised me with the quality of her new age music.

Many people are critical of GHS's attempt at exploring other fields, but in fact, I find this refreshing compared to other actors or actresses who merely resort to making fast money through endorsement deals. Moreover, GHS had explained time and again that writing a novel, writing songs, and drawing were all learning steps she was taking for her ultimate dream of directing a movie. As an actress, shouldn't such passion for movies (whether as a director or as an actress) be praised instead of discouraged?

And most importantly, GHS has encouraged many others to pursue things they love, rather professionally or in the amateur level (ex. Jung Woo Sung - movie directing). I too have been inspired to actually take a stab at being a kdrama scriptwriter, instead of just sitting around and dreaming about it, whatever may come of it.

p.s. Sorry for the long post and going off tangent. But in keeping w/ the topic of this post, the trailer she directed is now out. Your thoughts?

i agree with your thoughts sallynally! since watching ghs in pure in heart i've become a fan and though i've never read her book...i've seen her paintings and listened to her new age cd...and i gotta say that i enjoyed them. true, she may not be be "educated" in these areas but that shouldn't stop her from following her dreams or show her fans what she can do. i too agree with the other post that she has gain antis since BOF. some people say that they couldn't finish BOF bcuz of her but i think that if she wasn't in it i couldn't finish it bcuz of KHJ's acting. he's got a great personality but i can't belive he won an award for it. if ghs isn't your cup of tea why waste your time posting negative comments? anyways, i admire her hard work n' i think she's a good role model for all.

btw..@ spoiled....ghs did graduate from an art college.

@spoiled: well your name does say it all.

@apsara: you need to chill. I've never understood why Gu Hye-sun or any positive/encouraging comment directed towards her gets attacked so much only on this site. Hell, even if so much as a mild criticism is directed at someone like Yoon Eun Hye or Lee Dae Hee, hordes of crazy fans come out of the woodwork. Except for maybe a few fans, the majority of Hye-sun fans don't treat her as some flawless idol. We accept her flaws, recognize the need for improvement, and support her in her desire to experiment and try new things. So, you may be as patronizing as you like and think her talent is overrated and meant for the tween/teen audiences...that's your opinion and I respect it. But telling other commentators like robbo4 to censor their praises/comparisons is petty at best, hypocritical at worst.

@Biscuit, sallynally, and bluebunny: I totally agree.

Is she worth the comparison with others?

Why we have to compare one another? Imo, everyone have their own talents n capabilities.. No one has it all, nobody's perfect..so why don't we just appreciate their efforts n let them find what's best for them...doesn't hurt anyone, does it?

I feel like she's jumping all over the place. She should just focus on one and try to perfect it.

Her popularity gives her lots of public attention and opportunities but at the end of the day she's still a newbie to all this stuff.So compare to the professionals it's all ordinary. She still has alot to learn.

well-said, girl! Hye Sun is merely showcasing her God-given talents. She may not excel in all the things she's busy with right now but we must consider that she is still very young. While the other actressses of her age enjoy the fame & fortune just by being an actress, Hye Sun is exploring her world. In time, she will be the best in every field she engages with. Pure talent coupled with knowledge+ experience will bring out the best in a person. Hye Sun will continue to spread her wings and eventually she will soar high!

At this stage-yes I can see trace of ARROGANT' in her, ex; annouced your own charity, posting lots of your ulzzang face (this make her just like any k-actresses there), jumping from one project after another without trying to perfect the other -in silent she's craving for compliments. Don't be fool by sweet smiling face.

Hope she can control that 'A' feeling tht growing in her. TALENTED-not yet baby, maybe in 10 yrs time

I don't get why ppl bash her so much for pursuing her interests. To me they sound immature and jealous. Of course I myself envy her, but in a good, inspired kind of way. I think it's great that she grabs the opportunity while she's young, and that itself is a good message for everyone.

Also, there are a lot of other celebrities doing many different things within the world of art. What is so wrong with GHS doing just that?

Okay i'm not a big fan of ghs, actually i'm not a fan at all, i really didnt like her in bof's, i loved lee minho but couldn't stand her. She didn't get the makino character, and the only reason i watched the entire bof was because i loved the hyd manga and the japanese version of the drama. As for her doing projects other than acting, i think that's a great idea, she should concentrate on writing or whatever it i she's doing, she's not a good actress in my opinion. So i support her doing other stuff as i really dont wish to watch another drama with her, it may sound harsh but i'm just being honest.

@bluebunny...yes, I agree!

She's going for it. It's not like her dream is to poke you in the eye. So why get all worked up?

If it's for attention, then congratulations all you naysayers out there: you're giving her the "stomped kitten" excuse to garner even more attention. :) Regardless, she's working really hard--for attention or creative fulfillment--and I have to give her props for that.

I agree with the other comments that argue she's not particularly talented yet, that she's ridden the fever wave of BOF to highlight her other projects, and that she maybe should take a breather inbetween.

I also didn't enjoy her performance in BOF--and not because I was jealous! ^^ She took the grumpy spunkiness too far, to the point that I couldn't relate to what she was thinking.

So I agree with the posters who critique how well she's doing something. But don't guzzle the hatorade because she's doing...anything at all.

Why don't we call anyone whose interests bring them into the spotlight as arrogant all-thats?

c'mon you people..i bet half of the people who are posting here have not seen HS works or have not been to any forums wer they post GHS' works and accomplishments, or how REAL ART and FILM CRITICS assessed her works. it wouldn't matter to her what antis think of her anyways coz she has the spunk of not going with wat everyone expects of her...I'm just posting here coz i'm really irked at the way a lot of people here are posting their opinions without even bothering to know wat they are talking about. There are too many critique wannabes here, who doesn't really have the talent and the verbosity to lay their claim on wat they are saying.. So, my two cents... get a life people! and do something productive than hanging out here poking at wat GHS does..Critics are praising her (wat u called) "mediocre" works..so, if ur as good as most of u are claiming to be...i ask you to please give us a sample of how u will analyze one of GHS' works and let's see if that will merit a critics' thumbs up...wat u say??
