You’re Beautiful: Episode 4

The ratings battle looks like it’s going to be Iris‘s to lose, but at least You’re Beautiful improved slightly from yesterday. (Their numbers came in at a respective 25.3% and 8.9%. Heading to the Ground sank further to hit its series low, a 3.3%.) I don’t really buy the argument that the audiences for the two dramas are so vastly different, but I enjoy the contrasting tones. (I’m sure there are differences in viewership, but all in all, drama lovers like dramas when they’re fun and entertaining, and don’t confine themselves to certain genres.)

SONG OF THE DAY

You’re Beautiful OST – “여전히” (Still). This is the main song sung by A.N.JELL in this episode.

EPISODE 4 RECAP

Tae-kyung jumps into the pool to rescue Mi-nam, who is starting to lose consciousness. He shakes her underwater until she rouses, and swims for the surface. Unfortunately, in her struggle to get to the surface, she kicks him on the head, shoving him back down.

He gurgles angrily, “Go… Mi… Nam…” and sinks.

(HAHAHA. I had a feeling the writers were going to subvert this touching gesture with a punchline.)

Mi-nyeo surfaces and sighs in relief at her near miss. She gets dressed, wondering who it was who came to save her. Just as she thinks back and is struck with the possibility of it being Tae-kyung, she looks at the pool in alarm — just as his body floats to the surface.

Soon, an ambulance arrives and a weakened Tae-kyung is being wheeled out on a stretcher. He sees Mi-nyeo by his side, gripping his hand worriedly. He raises his head, and with the last of his strength, he puts his hand on top of hers… and flings it off. (HAHA.)

On the upside, as a result of this news, the fans come around and praise Mi-nam for (supposedly) saving Tae-kyung’s life. Sayuri leads the rest of the fan club in a chant, “Go Mi-nam, thank you!”

On the other hand, Tae-kyung is peeved to hear that Mi-nam has been made into the hero. He mutters, “Who saved whom?” Sung-chan thinks Tae-kyung should stay longer at the hospital. Tae-kyung grumps that he’s fine, but Sung-chan says that the public response has been really good. Staying longer would take advantage of that. LOL.

Meanwhile, another celebrity is at the hospital today — top pop star Yoo Heyi. (Hyee? Hae-yi?) She visits a sick child and cries in compassion, all while a camera crew busily films the proceedings. Heyi is loved by all and called “Korea’s fairy” as an endearment (similar to “America’s sweetheart,” it’s the label that both Eugene and Sung Yuri were called back in their idol days).

Heyi has to excuse herself because she’s so overcome with her emotions, and steps outside while the others marvel at her kind heart. Of course, they don’t see her walking away like a pop-diva Keyser Soze, her tearful sniffles gradually turning into a derisive sneer. Back in her van, she gripes about the photo op and orders her assistant to hand her a tissue.

But wait — it’s not an assistant, it’s Tae-kyung sitting in the backseat. She stepped into the wrong van! Gathering her wits, she quickly assumes her public persona, adding a hint of flirtatiousness, but he’s not fooled since he’s seen her true side. She drops the act and says, “I’m no fairy, like you’re no angel.”

Still, she sees his comments as an interest in her (no doubt because everyone else fawns over her). He’s turned off by her conceit (although it rather mirrors his own), and tells her to leave with her trash (dirty tissues) and to leave the door so he can air out her noxious perfume.

Heyi leaves in a huff. As she heads back to the hospital, a reporter spies the A.N.JELL decal on the van, and wonders at the connection…

Jeremy confronts Mi-nyeo, demanding to know what happened at the pool between her and Tae-kyung. He threatens to spray her with water if she doesn’t spill, and she can’t think of an answer, so he makes good on his threat. He chases her around with the garden hose, spraying her with water and asking for the truth.

But at some point, his mind starts to get away from him again, because the sight of Mi-nam dripping with water takes on a suggestive (appealing) vibe. Alarmed at his own reaction, Jeremy raises the hose to spray her again — but this time he’s sprayed instead.

Shin-woo has stepped in to stop him, and reminds Jeremy that their first performance as the new group is approaching, and Mi-nam can’t get sick.

Jeremy’s reaction is hilarious as he exclaims in a hurt tone, “Did you just spray me to save that guy?!” Feeling betrayed by his hyung, Jeremy turns to his dog for comfort.

Shin-woo again dries Mi-nyeo off, then asks what happened yesterday. Why was she around when Tae-kyung fell into the pool?

Before she can respond, Tae-kyung announces, “It was my mistake.” He says that he had slipped and fallen, and Mi-nam helped him. Shin-woo accepts this and lets the matter drop, but he finds it even odder that Tae-kyung would make a mistake (and admit to it). Clearly he senses there is more to the story.

Tae-kyung heads to his room to find that Mi-nyeo has left food for him. She’s learning, because when she pops by, this time she stays at the threshhold until he (reluctantly) invites her in.

It’s a good sign that he makes a move to eat it, even if he does stop before he gets the chance — he’s allergic to shellfish. She apologizes, saying she didn’t know, to which he answers, “Yeah, I’m sure you didn’t. That’s why you’re frightening.” Mi-nyeo replies that she just wanted to be useful.

Rehearsals. The guys get down to business preparing for their upcoming performance, and Mi-nyeo gradually improves until finally, the guys are satisfied. (There’s a moment when Mi-nyeo angles for a high-five, is left hanging by Tae-kyung, and then self-fives.)

Meanwhile, Mi-nyeo asks Hoon-yi and the stylist to help her find the woman who brought her the photograph.

Jeremy watches Heyi’s video clip of the hospital visit, enamored of the pop star, and uses this as an opportunity to suss out his hyungs. He prods them to admit that they like Heyi, or that they like girls (emphasis on girls) like her. He’s disappointed when neither Shin-woo nor Tae-kyung agrees with him, then pointedly asks Mi-nam for an opinion on Heyi.

The two others tense briefly, but Mi-nyeo just answers blankly, “Who’s Yoo Heyi?”

Hoon-yi and the stylist (who really needs a name other than “Stylist Wang”) therefore teach Mi-nyeo all the various idol stars using a child’s rhyme (used to learn multiplication tables) altered with the names of idol stars.

Her training is progressing well, but Mi-nyeo has a sticky moment when another group of trainees(?) find her in the bathroom. Quickly, she slips into a stall to avoid their attention, but the lead guy grows offended. He knows she’s avoiding him, and accuses her of being snobby now that she’s made it into a group. Mi-nyeo protests and makes grunting noises to try to convince them that she’s really in the stall for gastrointestinal purposes, although they don’t buy it.

She tells herself sadly, “I guess everyone hates me. It’s only because I’m afraid I’ll get caught as a girl.” But when she steps out of the stall, she finds the three trainees staring at her in shock: “Are you a girl?”

They grow suspicious and decide they have to check, spurring her to run out.

As they pursue her down the hall, Sung-chan hears the guys’ accusations and asks, “Go Mi-nam, you’re a girl?” She keeps running through the crowd of fans, who overhear the shouts and also catch on.

As she runs down the front walk, Mother Superior pulls up in a taxi. (Never thought I’d write that sentence, ha.) Wisely, the nun asks, “You’ve run hard, but are you short of breath? Do you hurt where you were hit? Does something seem odd to you?”

This, as you may have guessed, is all a dream. Mi-nyeo awakens in the stall and breathes a sigh of relief.

When the A.N.JELL guys head out, Mi-nyeo is startled to find a few signs with the name Mi-nam on it. Sayuri now faces her with nervous excitement, asking for an autograph. When Mi-nyeo asks, “Didn’t you hate me?” Sayuri shakes her head vehemently.

Mi-nyeo carefully signs her name, but her letters are block-like and childish. Tae-kyung catches a glimpse of them and smirks, then wields his own pen with a flourish. He pretends to do this nonchalantly, but he’s totally showing off for her benefit. Mi-nyeo is duly impressed with his cool signature, and feels sad about hers in comparison.

Therefore, she practices various different styles, and asks for Tae-kyung’s help picking out the best one. When he says they all suck, she requests his help in devising a new autograph.

He declines (and Mi-nyeo, now used to his prickly personality, doesn’t take it personally, but backs off). However, when she leaves, Tae-kyung grabs some paper and gets work on a cool autograph anyway.

Shin-woo offers a hand, and is a little disappointed to hear that she asked Tae-kyung for help first. He tells Mi-nyeo to come to him first in the future. He devises a cutesy signature that suits her personality, and she is grateful for it.

The subject of autographs makes Shin-woo wonder how she came upon her name, which leads to mention of her parents. He’d heard she doesn’t have parents, but she answers cheerily that her mother is alive. “Or, she may be alive. She must have left us right after giving birth to us for some reason.”

Her name is unique enough to be memorable, so Mi-nyeo is confident that it will help in reuniting with her mother: “If I become famous, she will come find me. I’m waiting for that.”

Meanwhile, Tae-kyung is pleased with himself for coming up with an adequate autograph and leaves it in Mi-nam’s room. (It’s very cute how he leaves it on the desk, but worries that it’ll get lost in the clutter, so he finds a better place to store it — with one corner sticking out of her trunk.)

As he leaves her room, he runs into her and is about to tell her about the autograph, but is cut short when she tells him happily, “Shin-woo hyung made one for me.”

He waves her aside and pretends not to care, but back in his room, he pouts; he’s annoyed that he bothered to help. But he’s also struck with the thought that Mi-nam will find the paper he left behind, and imagines her mocking him, saying Shin-woo’s is better. He must get his back!

Thus Tae-kyung sneaks into Mi-nam’s room, where she’s asleep on top of the chest. (Spying the autograph Shin-woo came up with, he sniffs, “It’s not so great.”)

He has to pull her away from the chest to retrieve his paper, and doing so causes her to topple backward — still asleep — onto him. The movement turns out the light, and Tae-kyung finds himself lost in the dark. He suffers from “night blindness” — an inability to see anything without adequate light — and has to fumble his way to the door.

Once out in the safety of the (lit) hallway, he says, “Go Mi-nam really is dangerous.”

Now for the aunt. Being rather flighty and brash, Auntie Dearest has gotten into some kind of brawl, and complains to her fellow cellmate, “Did I know that bitch’s nose was an $8,000 nose?” Hehe. Furthermore, she takes out a loan to secure her release, figuring she can count on her famous nephew Mi-nam to repay her debt.

As Mi-nyeo wonders what kind of person her parents were, her aunt explains to her cellmate that the father was a well-known songwriter — in fact, he even wrote for the famous singer, Mo Hwa-ran. We learn from a televised interview that Hwa-ran’s favorite song is the one that Go Jae-hyun — Mi-nam’s father — wrote for her, and she describes it as holding memories of the purest love she’s ever received.

At the music festival, Jeremy eagerly approaches Heyi, who is hosting the event. Using her sweet public persona, Heyi says she’s a fan, and greets each of the members — until she gets to Tae-kyung, whose name she pretends not to know. (He can’t believe her nerve, and calls her immature.)

As the guys ready for rehearsal, Hoon-yi tells Mi-nam that the woman with the photograph has returned and is ready to meet her. However, because of the performance, she can’t obey her impulse to leave right away, and Hoon-yi assures her that he’ll take care of the meeting and call her with details right away. He points Mi-nam back to Studio B for makeup and rehearsal.

Unfortunately, Mi-nyeo mistakes that for Studio D, and wanders in the wrong hallway. Inside that room, she finds Mo Hwa-ran sitting alone, who mistakes her for her assistant.

When Mi-nyeo clarifies her identity, Hwa-ran takes the chance to ask questions about Tae-kyung. Mi-nyeo doesn’t know about their bad blood and is happy to tell her, “Tae-kyung hyung is your fan!” He even has her movies and music in her room.

Hwa-ran sizes up the innocent Mi-nyeo and offers to give an autograph to be given to Tae-kyung. And when she hears the name Mi-nam, she muses, “Go Mi-nam — so there was another with that name.”

Because of her detour, Mi-nyeo is running late and races to the right studio, where she is prepped for rehearsal, all the while nervously eyeing her phone for Hoon-yi’s call. Hoon-yi is meeting with her aunt, who wants to meet Mi-nam, but the manager presses for information of the mother.

Tae-kyung sees how distracted she is, and takes her phone away. This is her first performance and she has to focus. Does she want to get kicked out?

That was a rhetorical question, so he is taken aback when she answers, “I may be able to leave soon.” She’s found the person who came looking for her, which means she’ll be able to find her mother soon. Thanking Tae-kyung for all his help, she brightens at the prospect of being able to leave and reunite with her mother.

We can infer from his reaction that Tae-kyung is partly disappointed at the thought, even though he tells himself that this is a good thing for him, that as soon as she gets that fateful phone call, she’ll be out of the group.

The performance goes well, and afterward, Mi-nyeo looks around for Tae-kyung, eager to check for messages. She can’t find him because Tae-kyung has slipped back into the dressing room, where he checks Mi-nyeo’s phone. So she borrows Jeremy’s phone to call her manager, just as Tae-kyung sees that she has received a text message, sent earlier by Hoon-yi.

Tae-kyung reads it: “I don’t think we’ll be able to find your mother. I’m sorry…”

Mi-nyeo calls Hoon-yi, who says regretfully, “I think she passed away.”

Jeremy finds her sobbing by herself, and is alarmed. Is she sick? Is she hurt? Panicking, he tells her to stay put, and rushes outside to get help. He finds Shin-woo and tells him Mi-nam is sobbing alone, and they race together to get to her.

In the interim, Tae-kyung finds her still sobbing, and looks at her with a conflicted reaction. She cries, “They say she cannot be found. She is not on this earth.”

As she bawls, Tae-kyung stares at her for a long, silent moment, and then crouches to hold her comfortingly…

…which is, of course, how Jeremy and Shin-woo find them.

COMMENTS

I have said that the issue I most have with the Hong sisters’ writing is their lack of subtlety. I still think that’s true, but it doesn’t mean they can’t do it. They just tend to prefer the big jokey joke, like with their parody sequences. But when they do choose to be subtle(r), it’s can be pretty sly. Everything in this world is basically a parody of the real idol world — take, for instance, the entire character of Sung-chan — and they don’t necessarily have to make a big statement about every little thing. Just by including a point, they’re acknowledging and poking fun at it. Like with Sung-chan telling Tae-kyung to stay in the hospital because it’s good for his image. Or Heyi faking compassion to win brownie points with the public.

Also: I love angsty comedies! If we were in another, less exuberant romantic drama, it would be something of a letdown to head into heavier territory rather quickly like this. But in You’re Beautiful, I find that the comedy still undercuts the big moments (like Mi-nyeo kicking Tae-kyung unconscious, or Tae-kyung suffering night blindness) so that the angst doesn’t overpower. (Or so I hope it will prove to be.)

And Shin-woo! I still think he’s a yummy character, but I’ll admit that he’s got some acting weaknesses. Hhoney, I love you but you’ve gotta work on that line delivery.

All in all, a fun, lively episode.

I DONT THINK THAT THEY ARE HALF BROTHER HALF SISTER ...MAYBE IT KINDA LIKE WINTER SONATA THAT THEIR PARENTS HAVE AN AFFAIR IN THE PAST..OR MAYBE THE MOM OF MI NAM IS ONLY THE STEP MOTHER OF TAE KYUNG...BUT ANYWAYS FOR ME I THINK THEY'RE NOT HALF BROTHER/SISTER CAUSE OF THEY ARE WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE STORY BECAUSE MI NAM (MI NYEO) IS ALREADY STARTING TO FALL IN LOVE SO I DONT THINK ABOUT THAT...TAE KYUNG AND MIN YEO THEY SUPPOSED TO BE TOGETHER......I LIKE THEM TO END IN EACH OTHER'S ARMS AND OF COURSE THEY WILL HEHE......HOPE SO....

Ok, I've decided I'm going to stop reading your reviews for this series and instead watch the series first...

Then after I'm done I'll come back and read it.

But what sucks is that I'll be watching it on a different schedule as everyone else and won't be able to talk about it :( Oh well, I guess that's what Open Fridays are for :)

For some reason, even though I like Shin-Woo, I'm not rooting for him like I usually would. I don't know if it's lack of chemistry or lack of interaction. I actully like Tae-Kyung because he's kind of weird and Mi-Nyu is kind of weird, so it seems to work out. Hopefully, Shin-Woo, after that look at the end of this episode, will make me want to root for him again.

Thanks for the recap! Although I watched the drama then read
the recaps I still find it entertaining.

I'm happy that this drama mixes angst with comedy. In Episode 4
we see TK letting his guard down trying not to be the cool idol
guy but the actual compassionate guy that he is. JGS pulls this
off beautifully.

When Mi Nam cried I cried with her. She is the kindess
most innocent character I've watched this year and although
I am the type who likes my women characters to be driven
and strong. Mi Nam has won me over. She is "pure" but
not an idiot.

Shin Woo...I am bitten by the 2nd guy syndrome. Why is it
that the heronines always always fall for the flawed fellows
who yell and scream at them the moment they meet and
not the ones who soothes their hurts?

Jeremy he always ends up jumping to conclusions. He is
feeling alarm bells about Mi Nam and yet he does not
suspect Mi Nam being a girl instead he thinks she's
gay. His body is telling him one thing his brain another
and I think he's going bananas...poor dense guy.

Jealousy all around for episode 4. Although TK has yet
admit even to himself that he has a soft spot for MN it's
pretty obvious the way he tries his best to save her.
He with his mother issues as well, he wonders why MN
even bothers to look for her mother. But admires her
persitence.
Shin Woo has started feeling a sense of possession
and wonders why MN would go to TK before going to
him, He's thinking she doesn't get along with TK why
does she go to him first? The expression on his face
when he sees TK comforting MN says it all.

Truthfully I dunno where this drama is going but
I know it's going to be one interesting and fun
ride.

This show is so freaking adorable..
I absolutely love Tae-kyung. He is absolutely twisted and kind of reminds me of a mixture of Phebe and monica from friends and meryl streep in devil wears prada...He is just deliciously wierd...Thank god the main character is not the charming perfect chaebol....The hair, the guyliner, the smirk. the sneer, he basically rocks everything....
I used to hate park shin hye but i think she is pretty damn good in this series....She does look confused and lost without seeming robotic....She plays mi-nam as sweet without being barf-inducing . Her mi nam is extremely nice and gentle wihtout looking like an airhead or a mouse. The scene where Tae-kyung is imagining about the autograph is just too funny and Park shin hye is just hilarious there
I really love Shin-woo but i thought the writers forgot about him in this episode..He is like a background character and no-one really seems to care that much about him...GO min-nam is also not that interested...he is turning into a overeager-to-help lovesick puppy who tries to act like he is super enlightened and knows everything about everything while trying desperately to look cool...They really need to add some depth to the character..
Hong-ki...Please someone tell him that Go mi-nam is a girl...I cannot see him torture himself anymore

Hmm I actually thought PSH's acting's pretty good. I think her being feminine is actually appropriate. It's quite normal to have girly guys in kpop nowadays. BBF was about "flower boys" and then there are real flower boys like Super Junior Heechul and FT's Hongki aka Jeremy.

Well, even Jeremy senses something. Taekyung and shinwoo found out. Fans probably don't realise it cause they don't see her that often. Plus they'll probably just shrug it off thinking she's really a flower boy. Plus, she was a nun. So you can't really expect her to know how to act like a man all of the sudden.

:D

Thank you your recaps always is the icing on the cake after I watch the episodes........keep up the excellent job.

I'm totally in LOVE with this drama is so fun and fresh to watch, after alomst a year of mediocre dramas this is something I was waiting for something lighthearted to LOL like crazy.......the Hong sisters are doing an incredible job and I think the twist and turns of this drama are going to get hilarious when each characters start to show their true selfs.....this last two episodes difinetly points toward that direction........I love how they combined the serious issue with laughter and that is what making this series so great to watch.......and episode 4 proves that point.......
PEOPLE PLEASE STOP COMPERING BOF/HANA KIMI and COFFEE PRINCE
this series is nothing like the others it has it own speciall unique feel to it....its a parody of those characters with a twist......

1. Shinwoo is just looking to see how everything is unfolding but at the same time he sees Minam like a little lost kid...who needs a true friend...so he keeps a eye out for her.....
2. Jeremy is just trying to figure out why Minam is weird......but I think he will come to care once he founds out that he is a she.....LOL
3. TK doesn't love her yet, the vibe I get right know is that he just staring to accept , tolerate her but he doesn't like or love her yet......is going to be fun once he falls for her......the hug at the end was more like a brotherly love or compassionate hug since he knows how much she was looking for her mom......

Thanks Javabeans for the excellent recap!
I've fallen in love with this drama so much that I watched this ep twice and am glad that I did. I could find out more emotions this time most of which I missed before. For example, did anybody see how TK re-grabs MN's cell phone and wears an angry look for a split second as he tells himself that he's thankful since a call to her cell would make MN leave? I didn't pay too much attention to it before but I think it betrays how TK already started to care for MN. Nice touch!

52 budsdiana --- the Hong sisters also screenwrote other "trendy" kdramas such as My Girl (Lee Dong Wook, Lee Da Hae)... also Fantasy Couple (Han Ye Seul, Oh Ji Ho) and Hong Gil Dong (Kang Ji Hwan and Sung Yuri, Jang Geun Suk who plays Tae Kyung in YB was second lead there)

Chelsea ---

J: Yoo He Yi is amazingly beautiful. If she isn’t beautiful, then who is?
T: Go. Mi. Nam.

The timing!
T: Mouth is dirty!

Javabeans didnt recap that part of the ice cream scene... but i TOTALLY LOVED it!! the timing of Tae Kyung was soooo perfect!

Maybe his subconcious already thinks of Mi Nyeo/Mi Nam as beautiful?

Thanks for the recap!

I seriously hope Jeremy finds out soon. If he still doesn't find out in the next 2 episodes...arrrgh. That will be annoying. It's funny to see him misunderstand things but like everything else in life, too much of something is badddd.....

Nah, I doubt if they're bro and sis...well, we kind of know that the writers will probably never do that right? What I fear is that they will actually waste an episode or two with the "omg I'm in love with her but...she's my sister..." dilemma. That is sooo passe not to mention, cliche. I agree with someone's comment. TK's mom's reaction was too nonchalant to give that 'It's the name of someone I love/lost' vibe. I agree (and hope) that TK's mom and MNam's Dad were once in love and because of the kids he gave up. Maybe that's why she abandond TK for a while? .......?

Loved the preview. MiNam (MiNyeo)'s heart starts pounding? Oh ho....that's where it all starts...:)

I know a lot of people like Shin woo and yes, I agree that he's really nice and supportive but we know he will not end up with MN. For me, this is because SW doesn't inspire MN the way TK does. Yes TK is a meanie and he's always angry, but when you analyze what he says, it actually makes sense. I think MN sees it that way...she is drawn to him because he actually pushes her to work harder, be better. And he gives her just the right amount of prodding that she needs. TK doesn't cuddle MN or pats her like a dog, but when he gives her a 'push' it is always the right kind of 'push' that she needs to actually achieve something that she wants. That is something SW cannot do for MN no matter how kind he is. I believe MN classified SW as the big bro she might have had. She cares for him but is not inspired by him.

Sorry for making this post long. Just got inspired I guess,,,, hahah. Can't wait for the next epi!!

I'm sooo thankful that you're doing the recaps fast dramabeans - it doesn't feel complete when I don't read this whilst watching You're Beautiful, or any other drama you've recapped for that matter.. so yeah, thanks!
Omg, LOVE LOVE LOVEE Taekyung. I thought I liked Shinwoo better in the first couple of eps but this episode has reignited my love for Geunseok, therefore totally swaying me to Taekyung's side. I mean, at the end when he holds her close and comforts her -- gahhhh *melts*

Don't get me wrong, I love everyone else as well too, but I think Taekyung as a character and Geunseok as a hottie :) dominates the drama for me....
But I do like the balance Jeremy gives to the story. I could see this getting kinda serious, with the whole plot of Minam's mum/Taekyung's mum kinda thing rolling out and the love triangle that is totally unavoidable, so I love the fact that Hongki's there adding a light/refreshing character who makes me roll over laughing all the time. He's adorablee :) The obliviousness, the exaggerated facial expressions, the assumptions, the water hose scene, hahaaaaa

Ohh... speculations about the next episode and subsequent happenings are exciting because it's actually somewhat unpredictable! :)

A few things from the trailer:
1) MN appears to be in UEE's outfit (I think her character's name is Yoo Yi... to play on her 'real life' name) and perhaps somehow posing as Yoo Yi? I'm undecided whether that's part of some elaborate plot trying to sneak MN out of the building in the disguise of being Yoo Yi? Trying to distract papparazzi attention while the real Yoo Yi makes an escape?? Or, perhaps more likely, it's a dream that poor Jeremy has of MN "in drag"! ;)
(Ordinarily I would call the former more likely in a k-drama, but who knows with the Hong sisters and Jeremy's rich imagination! )

2) I'm pretty sure the mystery around who the mother is for both TK and MN is meant to make the subject of being related confusing for us and the truth will be otherwise... plus I trust the Hong sisters not to give us the old "oh no we're siblings!" line, so I look forward to potentially papparazzi rumours or fan club silliness around the subject rather than melodrama!

3) #120 "Loved the preview. MiNam (MiNyeo)’s heart starts pounding? Oh ho….that’s where it all starts…:) "
Well said! I'm all excited to see how that one goes... I'm sure it'll warrant a few consultations with Mother Superior as MN sorts that one out! ;)

Truth be told there is actually a certain sense to the TK-Yoo Yi and SW-MN pairing... the former are cynical entertainers, both arrogant with diva tendencies, while the latter are more "nice guys" characters. So I anticipate some angst along those lines (I'm totally for going back and forth between hilarity and geniune feeling... which I think this serial has done a good job so far in!) Though I'm already a lost-cause fan of the TK-MN pairing.... it's hard not to feel for a pairing that has made my cheek muscles ache so much from laughter.

One last comment about TK- I'm impressed... there have been lots of 'weird' lead characters, and being 'mean' seems the standard "anti-hero" these days for k-drama... but I think prissy-to-the-point-of-goofy and allergic, night-blind, clean freak to boot?! It's the new "new age man" (or maybe just the new "idol weirdo hero") and I just can't resist cheering him on!

I guess his form of weird-looking, weird-behaving is less abusive than some of the other lead characters of k-drama (Beethoven Virus... shudder... Boys over flowers... yikes! Much as I loved those dramas, the level of violence and abuse distressed me). Yet TK is definitely seriously flawed and hardly even cool.... EXCEPT for the fact that he's geniunely, deeply, wonderfully passionate about singing and clearly cares about those around him (though he wouldn't express so, I would say his actions qualify him: More than once risking his limb and life for a friend? Giving up his cynical image for a moment to comfort a person who just lost her mother?).

Thanks for a great character Hong sisters and JGS- even if for that alone, I'm pretty pleased to be following this serial. Go JGS! Go Mi-nam! (Ahh... finally, the obvious pun!)

thanks for your recaps. imo, this is better than boys before flowers, which had too many tacky elements since it was taking itself too seriously. this drama, at least, knows how to make fun of itself in good doses.
this drama, along with queen seon deok, are my current favorites.

although the ratings are good for iris, which has more riding on its success, with the huge budget and threats, i've never been able to get into these types of korean dramas since they are never done convincingly without being cheesy. and kim tae hee, while one of the most lovely actresses around, still cannot act. it goes to show that study smarts is different from acting insight. i guess you can't have them all, right?

I can't believe I'm saying this but I like this more than Iris. Unbelievable... And this is bad because now I'm beginning to worry that it might get axed for low ratings. Why did these two have to run at the same time? WHYYYYYYY?!

@nell123, I agree with you. I tried watching Iris but I couldn't pass the first 20 minutes. +_+" It reminds me of ... Cain and Abel somehow with the flashback at the very beginning.

YB on the other hand, I can't seem to wait till Wednesday. Ah, funny moments.

I hope they won't axe it, it's planned 16 episodes anyway right? Not that long, and it's not doing that bad if you think about it, ratings wise is not as good as other Hong Sisters' drama but that's a given since this one focus on idol groups and hence target only toward young people, who prefer online or phone methods than watching it on TV (as they have school, and the older people hogging the TV). YB may not have good ratings, but it's creating a lot of buzz online, and with young people. I'm thinking if this drama included the typical chaebol boys etc, it would have gotten better rating? Like older people like their chaebol characters?

SBS didn't cut Dream, and that one performed quite badly, highest rating for that was 6% range.

i thk it will go this way , i hv a feeling it will hv the same plots as "the rose"
up till this moment.. i 'm really enjoying this drama...but i feel there's too little scene of the jeremy & shin-woo

I also want to say that I think it's pretty great that they have been pulling back Tae-Kyung's swoop lately. Int he first couple of epis he was dead set on sporting the "Aliyah" bangs and I was like "why does everyone think he's so hot?" But, pull that hair out of his face and he's quite the looker... you know, for a skinny emo kid.

JB, thanks for posting the OST for us! :)

As the Abba song goes...
"Who could live without it? I ask in honesty,
What would life be? Without a song alas, what are we?
So I say 'Thank you for the music, for giving it to me!' "

So thank you for your thoughtful song selections! :)

I think Shin Woo *really* treats Mi Nam like a puppy dog. With the petting. And the solicitous looking after. I can't get too excited about that type of relationship ("there there, pet pet, let me look after you") Whereas I agree that Tae Kyung, for all his carrying on, actually *engages* with Mi Nam more, as a real person who irritates him and challenges him and moves him. And I can go with why he would be the choice for MN (apart from JGS's adorableness). Who wants a doting mommy for a boyfriend? Give me someone who doesn't pander to me, but challenges me, stretches me, and calls me on my shortcomings.

Is it just me, watching this too compulsively, or do they have some continuity issues? TK takes the lid off one bowl, and MN replaces the same lid on another. The boys are being made up in the dressing room, and then appear for the concert in completely different styles. Or is this sort of thing quite common, and I'm just not invested enough to notice or care?

I haven't had a chance to read through all the comment so I'm not sure if its been asked already... but just wanted to know (if anyone knows..) are all the actors actually playing their instruments or just miming? Its obvious that the drummer is playing for real but what about the others?

Thanks in advance for the clarification :)

Thats how I pretty much feel about MN & SW pairing. Love Shinwoo, the nice guy that he is with his cute Kyungsangdo accent... but if he ends up with Minyeo it would be such a boring relationship... nice girl with the nice guy. Unless of course they show Shinwoo to have something interesting in his characterization in the following episodes.

As for the MN &TK pairing... its more engaging... because, well that emo boy needs a nice sweet girl to melt that cold exterior of his! And Minyeo is doing a pretty good job so far... and we're only at four episodes to boot!

@ ames4eva

I think most of them just mimic playing their instruments.... because I'm sure Hongki (Jeremy) is the vocalist of FT Island, and not the drummer. Not sure about KYW, since I'm not familiar with his group CN Blue.

I kinda remember JGS also playing guitar when he was in Nonstop 4... but mostly he sings.

PSH definitely is faking the keyboard... it totally showed in that one BTS clip...

hope its not an incest story......(really suck if it is)

@ missmanderley :-)

@ Ames4eva

I've been watching the clips obsessively, asking that very question. And I wasn't going to obsess quite so publicly, but since you asked: Hong Ki is probably actually drumming along on stage, but if you listen to the song track, the drum pattern has more flourishes then the basic time-beating he's doing. So his drumming is not what you hear. Mi Nam looks like she's kinda playing chords, but the timing is off at points; so again I'm guessing she can sort of play, but she's mostly faking it.

JGS is interesting because he's clearly trying very hard, and I can detect the odd D chord, though his bar chords look less convincing. He is probably playing *something* - but definitely not what you hear on the track. But what really kills me is that he doesn't even appear to be plugged in at the concert! Poor boy. Practices so hard and they don't even bother to give him a cable so that there's a *chance* we can believe he is playing. ShinWoo is trickiest, because the actor plays in real life. But in the concert footage he doesn't seem plugged in either, except when he plays a solo riff - I think that might be the only piece of "real" playing. Anyhow, what you hear on tv is the studio recording (you can tell - JGS' vocals are steadier than in the rehearsal footage), and I'm sure at the "concert" they just played the recording and they all synced along.

There! I did say I was obsessing, didn't I? Sorry, I'll just go away now.

@ serendipity

oh not at all... i think even without observing so closely, you can tell that all four of them are mimicking the motions of playing an instrument to some degree.

Practices so hard and they don’t even bother to give him a cable so that there’s a *chance* we can believe he is playing.

the "trying hard" look might come the fact that JGS is after all playing a character that is highly egotistical.... (that or its just the rabid fangirl in me that defending JGS... rofl!)

i'm trying not to obsess too much... just because YB is so damn enjoyable to linger too much on its flaws.

serendipity ~ I soooo agree!!

Shinwoo should stop patting her on the head. Everytime he does that am like, 'Dude! she's not a dog so stop petting her like one!'

I hope he doesn't really wonder why MN likes TK more. Earth to Shinwoo, TK doesn't think she's K9. He might think her weird and annoying but definitely not K9.

When I watched the episode again I noticed the water bottle scene. When MN was having trouble with the water bottle, SW immediately got the bottle and opened it for her. I was thinking that if TK saw her struggling with the bottle...he won't help her but say something like 'are you a weakling? Can't even open a water bottle?' (his way of caring, in his own weird way)

And when MN totally screws it up. That's the only time he will help I guess. Haha

I certainly agree that this is a very refreshing exciting drama with innocent purity in the female lead (raised in by nuns in a convent!) who had hopes for fairytale-like ending of reuniting with long lost mother. Now, that she believes her mother to be deceased, perhaps the talented story writers will have to create a reason for her to stay in the all-male idol group while suggesting a surfacing of gradually brewing affection / heartstrings that may be subconsciously the main reason for her staying on (since she probably needs to be in that house for optimal relationship-drama development).

The story is full of potential – having a fraternal male twin later is very useful. She can use her brother’s real identity documents if required. Additionally, if more people became suspicious and enemies / reporter(s) wanted exposure, hopefully her twin brother would have recovered and be able to step in and take over at that time, thus potentially avoiding a scandal. Alternatively towards the end, she could reveal the truth to the world but be celebrated as an artist in her own right with her angelic vocal skills – revamping the A.N.JELL 4 male member band to maybe a cool ‘ANGEL’ band of 1 female and her 3 male band members (similar to the dream-like ending of episode 1).

Maybe Shakespearean-like elements will be written into the plot in future - female lead while posing as her twin brother could have another female character develop feelings for her, and for a happy end, maybe her twin brother could also requite these feelings........ will be waiting with heaps of excitement =) and THANKS for the great, great work!

Re: Concert- ;)- the voices they are synching to is their own I assume? (One of the OST for this song credits JGS and PSH right?) But do you think perhaps the instruments they are synching to are not their own playing? (I mean it sure looks like everyone in the band is familiar with instrument playing! :) )

Re: Shinwoo's head patting... I know he's trying to make her comfortable with him by it, and actually think it's quite a comforting gesture, so I don't have any bones about it. Though I do think it does make the tension higher if he wasn't quite _as_ casual about it. E.g., even Jeremy's paranoia and fits of noticing Mi Nam's attractiveness sets up unresolved sexual tension (UST) there which I like! :)

Totally see it as somewhat bland if we get the nice-guy-nice-girl pairing, though it's early days yet, and I hope each will develop more personality as we move along. MN has personality but definitely needs spine and growing up (she herself is given too puppy-like behavior indeed... and though it's sweet- like a puppy taking a shine to an unfriendly cat -i.e., TK- in the household... tail wagging and following him around even as the cat hisses at her... okay, I'll stop now before the allegory gets out of whack! ;)- still she's not a puppy and will need to start to stand up to TK more.)

While we talk about TK challenging MN, I also want to see MN challenging TK's impatience and nit-pickiness- he's not perfect either and as the characters change I want to see them being the drivers of that change for a real relationship to start! :) To be fair, she's not a push over, she did shove TK when he 'threw away' her ring after she said it was precious to her, and ignored TK when he tried at first to get her out of the pond the next morning... only relenting when she actually saw he had the ring!

BTW, if you read the translated personality 'quips' at viikiii you'll actually see that SW is supposed to develop in some unpredicted ways (fingers crossed it'll be so!)

http://www.viikii.net/channels/goto/beautiful#TOPIC/1040

PS I stand corrected! Yoo He yi it is! ... but doesn't it still sound like "U" "E" "E" a little? :)

This drama is just awesome. I've never been disappointed by any of the Hong sisters' dramas (yet). This is funny, refreshing and well-cast (they're all cute <3). I hated Park Shin Hye in Goong S, but I think it was because the drama was... bad. Seeing her as a male character in You're Beautiful shows how good she is as an actress: not too girlish, a bit boyish, so l'd cute I would fall for her if I was a boy XD.
But I wonder how Jeremy can be so clueless! Can't he see how much Mi Nam looks like a girl??? Jeremy's so funny, I wonder when he will discver the truth (I guess he'll be the last one to know about that XD).
I actually love it when Shin Woo pat Mi Nam like a dog XD. It's cute! He can't do anything else to show his affection actually (BECAUSE he's not supposed to know she's a girl! So he can't hug her or take her hand or whatever), and I think it's a good way to show how much he cares for her. Shin Woo is just THE Ji Hoo I wanted to see in BOF :p.
Tae Kyung is a very interesting character (I love it when he smirks XD). Why can't he just cares for her without trying to hide it? I know it wouldn't be so interesting but he's just trying too hard for nothing (the scene with the autograph is awesome!)!
I'm so afraid Mi Nam (or Mi Nyu) could be related to Tae Kyung! TK's mum seems to be related to Mi Nam's dad in a way or another (was MN's dad TK's lover???)! Hope they'll not turn out to be half-brothers :(... Well, I'm pretty sure they won't (because it's still a comedy and a Hong sisters' one), but the suspense is killing me (who's actually TK's mum? She's not MN's mother, that's for sure, because if she was,she would at least know that she had 2 more children XD. Maybe she was MN's mum's best friend?).
The actress who plays MN's aunt just gets on my nerve (I loved her in My Girl and saw her in other dramas such as Sassy Girl Choon Hyang, Swallow The Sun and Hong Gil Dong)!!! I hate her voice, and she's a gold-digger-like character. Hate her. I'm sure she lied about MN's mum being dead. How can she lie about something that important???

Hope You're Beautiful will keep on being that fun :))). It's too bad the audience isn't really here (because they're all watching IRIS XD) because You're Beautiful deserves to be watched by millions of people :D. If I was a Korean citizen, I'd definitely pick You're Beautiful rather than IRIS :p.

Thank you javabeans for your recap (as always! I read them sometimes, but I can't always leave a comment ;_;)!

Looing forward to watching the following episodes! I was so disappointed by My Fair Lady, I'm happy You're Beautiful is here))).

Fan, Yeah, they're synching to their own voice recordings. But their instrument-playing is almost certainly not synching to their own - you need professional standards for that! It's one thing to fake playing the guitar creditably, and quite another to actually play an electric guitar at studio-recording level. I guess Jung Yong Hwa could do it, but why bother? Let the hired professionals do all of it.

With ShinWoo, it's not just the head-petting. It's the solicitous wound-binding and hovering bottle-opening. All the while with a strange lack of interest in her inner life. Who is she really? Doesn't it bother him that the supposed reason for her masquerade (being famous as Go Mi Nam so that her mother can find her) makes no sense at all if she is in fact NOT Go Mi Nam? Why isn't he curious enough about her to investigate further? Poor ShinWoo. Really, his problem as Second Lead is he's just not given enough script-writing attention to get at any depth that makes him an attractive proposition for Mi Neo; at least, not so far. Face it, at the moment he's just a foil.

I totally agree about MN challenging TK. I think it will happen - I suspect she's been set up as a nun for that purpose (apart from comic effect). So that his self-absorption can be challenged by her selflessness and inner strength, and his cynicism by her determination to hope.

And I think it's genius that TK is written as an obsessive-compulsive. It's always good for a laugh, as we have seen. And there's something very endearing about the little boy with big eccentricities. For relatively little effort, makes him a more interesting and engaging character (c.p. poor ShinWoo).
