Smile extended to 46 episodes

With its ratings approaching 20%, Smile‘s run has been extended by 16 episodes from its original 30. It will air 46 episodes and wrap at the end of February.

An article announcing the extension attributes the steadily increasing ratings and popularity of Smile to its ability to provide comic relief among the many “makjang” dramas that are currently on the air. Makjang dramas such as Angel’s Temptation, which is currently airing, use sensationalist, over-the-top storylines to hook viewers—a far cry from the realistic, homey charm of Smile. The burgeoning feelings between Jung-in and Hyun-soo, as well as the comic family scenes, have given viewers “wholesome” laughs.

The series’ writer Moon Hee Jung, whose last work was on Last Scandal, has done an exceptional job so far. The plot has taken longer to develop in this series than in a 16- or 20-episode series, but there have been plenty of giggle-worthy moments to keep the pacing tight.

And there are quite a few leads that have been hinted at, but have yet to be fleshed out—ownership of the Seo house; Han-se vs. Hyun-soo; Sung-joon and Ji-soo; Ji-soo’s backstory; even Jung-in’s backstory, which we still know very little about; among others. I’ve also got a soft spot for Kyung-soo and hope he gets a chance to shine. Hopefully this gives the drama plenty of material to work through in the remaining 30 episodes, without getting draggy or detracting from its main draw, the relationship between Jung-in and Hyun-soo.

Plus, I’m an optimist at heart, so I’ve got my fingers crossed that Smile will be able to keep up its momentum–the laughs, character development and romantic tension–without having to revert to maudlin/angsty plot twists. Angst has its place, but Jung-in and Hyun-soo are such refreshing characters that I’d hate to see them fall prey to cliche!

i don't know when this amazing news article was posted but let me just say, I AM VERY FREAKING PLEASED RIGHT NOW. I AM EXTREMELY ECSTATIC AT READING THIS AT 6:36AM WHEN I HAVEN'T GONE TO SLEEP ALL NIGHT AND WAS PLANNING TO BUT THIS WONDERFUL TIDBIT OF INFORMATION IS GOING TO KEEP ME AWAKE AND EXCITED FOR ANOTHER FEW HOURS. I AM TEEHEEING ALL OVER MY DORM ROOM AND ROLLING AROUND MY BED AND KICKING MY HEELS IN GLEE.

...

yeah, like other people, at second thought i was a little apprehensive of more draggy storylines (is it just me or has it started to drag a little more lately? no? just me? okay, i'm just getting my 16-episode itch on then. damn, those things are annoying, but they just won't take the hint and leave me alone), howeverrrrr, yes, it was planned for 50 episodes anyway, wasn't it? and knowing about it this change this early is not going to dent the effect of the pacing by much.

...

sometimes i wish korea paid more attention to things i like but i am very glad right now that they more or less love (when they remember) the two things that i'm in love with, which is wonder girls and smile, you. you freaking rule, korea. keep up the good work.

actually, i'm quite upset about eps extension. cos right, given the consistent pacing of the last 6-8 eps, and the fantastic end of eps 16, i seriously tink that for it to drag another 30 eps, it either mean

1) hyun soo is going to pair with jung kyung and jung in is going to pair with hanse at any time of the show, or
2) they are going to get married and see jung in get tortured by geum ja.

i seriously think (2) is impossible while (1) is going to be the case... i mean, or else how can things drag so long? they have to give jung kyung some stories right? like make her meaner? hee... anyway, i just feel that it's gonna be way too draggy, just like brilliant legacy where things just MOVE without you knowing it has moved. haha...

remember last scandal? it was perfect w tt number of eps when the leads are so cute. but in smile, only the 2 leads are so cute and i seriously doubt that they can carry on being cute for another 30 eps...

i'm oh-so-worried... O_O

oh, and given the extension, i can almost forsee the start of eps 17:

HS: "Jung In!"
JI: "Yes?"
HS: "are you hungry?"

-_-|||

i'm sure we were all waiting for "I Like You!"

RIGHT??? ^_^

*cross my fingers and hope i'm wRong"

i love this drama!
I was already worried about the original 30 episodes because it might drag...now at 46, whoa. I don't know what to expect. I hope there won't be to much angst. This is such a refreshing show and I'd hate it to fade as the episodes go on.
anyway, i'm keeping my fingers crossed! can't wait for the weekend.

@ 20, cheddar & 40, Lene

I am most suprise that Jung-in has a backstory…curious to what her backstory is…hearing that she has a backstory make me curious about her birth (the only thing that is popping my head, lol), seeing how her personality doesn’t match quite well with her family.

Haha--it's true, she does fit in better with the Kangs! It's so fun to read everyone's conjectures about what will happen next--46 episodes certainly leaves a lot of room for new developments, though I think we're all cringing a little at the potential pitfalls.

Regarding the above specifically, I just wanted to clarify -- I don't know if Jung-in necessarily has a backstory that will bring out any surprise twists. I was referring more to the fact that we still know nothing about her life prior to the wedding fiasco. Aside from the fact that she was engaged to Hyun-soo, what did she do? One episode hinted that she was popular with the oppas, so where did they go? Why doesn't she have any friends?

I think Jung-in stands on her own two feet because we're all so wrapped up in watching her progress with Hyun-soo, but if you think about it, she's a blank slate. We've learned a little about the past of all the characters: Grandpa's history with the Chairman, Jung-kil's bratty youth, Sang-hoon's "first love" crush on Joo-hee, Geum-ja's thirty years of marriage, Hyun-soo's past with Jung-kyung, Sung-joon's faux professional golf career, Ji-soo's gangsta (?) past.

And yet, Jung-in = ???? To be fair, there was the scene in which she describes her attachment to the Chairman, and she admits she was a lackadaisical student and didn't do much. Still, I'm really hoping that this blank gets filled in a little bit more. It's not such a nagging question as to detract from my enjoyment of the series, but it does seem odd.

If I can stand 100+ eps of You Are My Destiny, I can take 46 episodes of Smile, You! No sweat! I was expecting 50 episodes anyway because some sites listed the number of episodes as 50. I agree, so far, at 16 episodes, they still have a lot of (possible) ground to cover, Sung Joon's love line (I'm reeeally interested in the girl's background), grandpa triangle (lol!), aside from the adorable main couple. I love all the characters so much! Even Han Se (I thought the actor was blah in other dramas), but he's sort of cute here sometimes... I vaguely like family dramas, I watch them every now and then, kind of like the way I gravitate to Hallmark-y movies. I don't regret picking up Smile, You (attributed to my affection for Jung Kyung Ho!) It's one of my faves this year, next to Shining Inheritance and You're Beautiful...

I am a little worried because sixteen episodes is approximately enough time for two breaks ups and one botched engagement in KDrama land... but I had pretty much settled on it being a 50 episoder anyway. It kind of makes me sad though because I think the pace is perfect for a shorter series without too many twists and now we know for sure that they are going to add a lot of unnecessary crap that we don't need. It's going to be especially tough because the cast is relatively small, as opposed to say Sol Pharmacy with it's giant, sprawling extended family. And, to be honest, even Sol Pharmacy had trouble filling out all it's eps and dragged for a few weeks there toward the end. But, as long as Lee Min Jung and Jung Kyung Ho are there being smoking hot together... I guess I wont complain.

One more thing... I was going to wait until the recaps came out to say this but I can't so if you haven't watched the latest batch yet then stop reading now. I am SO PROUD of both the writers and Hyunsoo as a character for how they ended episode 16! I was preparing myself to be very angry as I watched Hyunsoo make that infamous reckless U-turn in order to run to Jung-Kyung while Jung-In lets herself be dragged home by Han-Se. I love that they avoided the obvious, angsty, cliche and went for it in this episode. And Hyunsoo was ridiculously hot when he was standing up to Hanse... love him! I just can't wait to find out what answer he gave Jung-Kyung over the phone. I will be severely disappointed if it isn't something along the lines of

JK: I have to know. If I'm a friend, what is Jung-In to you?
HS: Jung-In... I like her.

@Z: Gosh, do I love the lack of cliches in this drama. And I, too, was SO scared that HSoo was going to do the U-Turn - actually, it's become an automatic response now to hold my breath when characters are in vehicles and talking on the phone.

I'm really hoping that Writer Moon had originally planned for a 50 ep drama, then it got cut to 30 eps, and now it's just being extended to 46 eps, so she's practically back at square 1. As long as the Soo-In storyline stays refreshing, and Jung-Ho is impeccable with their chemistry/protrayals, I don't have any complaints. lols.

Looking forward to eps this weekend and recaps ^_^

Ok, let me try this again. Lesson learned: don't comment at the same time as YB recap is posted. lol. Anywho, this is great news! Thank you! Not much more to say since all the things I wanted to say have already been said but I especially love the idea of SooIn getting married and having kids! lol

@Z, Kgrl: I'm so glad that he didn't turn back to Jung Kyung too. Also I just have to say Hyun Soo looked so "macho" when he confronted Han Se. lol

Hi to all Smilers :)

I don't know how you guys handle it, watching other drama at the same time, I can't seem to enjoy anything else to it full extent. My mind keep going back to Smile,You.

Can't wait till the next eps and recaps :)

@59
Me too. All the other couples (even the YB couple) seem so blah compared to SooIn. I thought I'd gotten jaded and would never feel like this again but SY thrill me to bits. I am quite besides myself. LOL

Like vrosemarie, I was already expecting 50 episodes because that's what Dramawiki was listing it as being.

Smile, You is definitely one of the better dramas that I've seen, if not the best. It's just SOOO cute and not typical. And we're 18 episodes in and I'm still laughing. I can't say that for almost all the dramas I've watched. I saw a bit of a turn in episode 17 when Han Se and Hyun Soo had a showdown, but I'm hoping Han Se stays the cute, whiny, spoiled, Mama's boy that he is and doesn't become this villain who turns Hyun Soo x Jung In's love into some dramatic and serious. Of course, he's going to be jealous but I'm hoping it stays lighthearted. And maybe by the end of the series, Hyun Soo and Han Se can become friends because they are so funny together. I'm just really crossing my fingers that it doesn't change into serious stuff like most dramas.

i am thrilled that smile, you will be extended because jung kyung ho and lee min jung has such good chemistry together plus the storylines are realistic and not boring. I hope the writers continue this kind of pace.
I am an avid fan of jung kyung ho, so as long as he is in this kdrama i will continue to watch! fighting!
